Sakura: I like this!
Peter: Sakura! I’m gonna have a long sit down with the writer.
Sakura: They know you!
Peter: Alright, let’s get the translation of this. Let’s try to, ok? Here we go!
さくら (Sakura) : この赤い靴は素敵ですね!(Kono akai kutsu wa suteki desu ne!)
SAKURA: These red shoes are nice!
初美 (Hatsumi) : そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
HATSUMI: That’s right!
さくら (Sakura) : ピーター、この赤い靴は素敵ですか。(Pītā, kono akai kutsu wa suteki desu ka.)
SAKURA: Peter, are these red shoes nice?
ピーター (Pītā) : はい、素敵です!(Hai, suteki desu!)
PETER: Yes, they are nice.
さくら (Sakura) : やっぱり、素敵ではありません。(Yappari, suteki de wa arimasen.)
SAKURA: Just as I thought, they are not nice.
初美 (Hatsumi) : このドレスはきれいですね!(Kono doresu wa kirei desu ne!)
HATSUMI: This dress is beautiful.
さくら (Sakura) : そうですね!(Sō desu ne!)
SAKURA: That’s right.
初美 (Hatsumi) : ピーター、この青いドレスはきれいですか。(Pītā, kono aoi doresu wa kirei desu ka.)
HATSUMI: Peter, is this blue dress beautiful?
ピーター (Pītā) : はい、きれいです。(Hai, kirei desu.)
PETER: Yes, it’s beautiful.
さくらと初美 (Sakura to Hatsumi): やっぱり、きれいではありません。(Yappari, kirei de wa arimasen.)
HATSUMI: Just as I thought, it’s not beautiful.
さくら (Sakura) : この白いジャケットはどうですか。(Kono shiroi jaketto wa dō desu ka.)
SAKURA: How about this white jacket?
ピーター (Pītā) : 素敵ではありません!(Suteki de wa arimasen!)
PETER: It’s not nice!
さくらと初美 (Sakura to Hatsumi) : えぇぇぇ!(Eeee!)
SAKURA AND HATSUMI: Huh!?
初美 (Hatsumi) : これはとてもきれいです!(Kore wa totemo kirei desu!)
HATSUMI: THis is really beautiful!
さくら (Sakura) : やっぱりピーターはセンスがありません!(Yappari Pītā wa sensu ga arimasen!)
SAKURA: Just as I thought, Peter has no (fashion) sense!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Sakura: Yeah.
Peter: Sakura, you are too happy about this one.
Sakura: Hmm…
Peter: I am feeling you talk to the writers before the show.
Sakura: Right.
Peter: Well let’s just see what tomorrow’s conversation has in store for you.
Sakura: Uh-oh!
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Ok, lots of vocab in there. So, let’s get right into today’s vocabulary. Here we go!
Sakura: 赤い (akai)
Peter: This is?
Sakura: “Red”
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)あかい (akai)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: 赤い (akai)
Peter: Next one.
Sakura: 青い (aoi)
Peter: This is?
Sakura: “Blue”
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)あおい (aoi)
Peter: And one time, fast.
Sakura: 青い (aoi)
Peter: Now, what do these colors end in?
Sakura: い (i)
Peter: One more time?
Sakura: い (i)
Peter: Ok! Now, in this form, they’re actually i-adjectives.
Sakura: Right!
Peter: So, they’re treated as i-adjectives. So, how could we say “not red”?
Sakura: 赤くない (akakunai)
Peter: Yes! So, we have “red”, which is:
Sakura: 赤い (akai)
Peter: And “not red”:
Sakura: 赤くない (akakunai)
Peter: This is a very, very important one, because it’s said thousands of times, across your pen every day. This 赤い (akai) is everywhere. Now, when some people drink, their face turns, Sakura?
Sakura: 赤い (akai)
Peter: Which is?
Sakura: “Red”
Peter: Yes, so when they’re drinking and you see their face start to turn red, you can say?
Sakura: 赤い。(Akai.)
Peter: もう一度お願いします。(Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu.)
Sakura: 赤い。(Akai)
Peter: Ok, and then they’re going to deny it, which is?
Sakura: 赤くない。(Akakunai.)
Peter: Ok! So, let’s say Hatsumi is drinking and her face starts to turn red, we can say?
Sakura: 赤い!(Akai!)
Peter: 赤い!(Akai!)
Hatsumi: 赤くない!(Akakunai!)
Peter: 赤い!(Akai!)
Hatsumi: 赤くない!(Akakunai!)
Sakura: 赤い!(Akai!)
Peter: 赤い赤い!(Akai akai!)
Hatsumi: 赤くない!(Akakunai!)
Peter: Or, we can do the same thing for Sakura. さくら、赤い。(Sakura, akai.)
Sakura: 赤いでーす。(Akai dēsu.)
Peter: No, Sakura!
Sakura: Ok. 赤くない。(Akakunai.)
Peter: You’re not playing by the rules.
Sakura: Because I get red so easily. I always say 赤いです (akai desu).
Peter: Really?
Sakura: Or ask 赤い?赤い?(Akai? Akai?) “Am I red?”
Peter: Yes! So, this is a very, very useful one, right Sakura?
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: And, again, the point is that these colors when they have an い (i) attached are now i-adjectives and can be treated as so. Here’s another interesting one. Now, remember how do we add two i-adjectives together?
Sakura: Drop い (i) and add くて (kute).
Peter: Right! So, how can we say “The dress is red and beautiful.”?
Sakura: ドレスは赤くてきれいです。(Doresu wa akakute kirei desu.)
Peter: Yes! And, that is the くて (kute) and きれいです (kirei desu). Now, if we want to say “The dress is beautiful and red”, we can say?
Sakura: ドレスはきれいで赤いです。(Doresu wa kirei de akai desu.)
Peter: Yes! You see the difference? くて(kute) for i-adjectives, で (de) with noun.
Sakura: Adjectives!
Peter: Thank you, grammar Guru!
Sakura: Who is grammar Guru?
Peter: You are now. Ok! Next we have?
Sakura: 靴 (kutsu)
Peter: And this is?
Sakura: “Shoes” or “shoe”.
Peter: Yes, you’re correcting this. Very interesting timing who’s sharing that with us. Ok, break it down.
Sakura: (slow)くつ (kutsu)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: 靴 (kutsu)
Peter: Yes! Next we have?
Sakura: ドレス (doresu)
Peter: And this is?
Sakura: “Dress”
Peter: Ok! Now listen, Sakura is going to say the Japanese and the English one more time. As soon as you, these katakana words start getting into your brain, your vocabulary is just going to expand so fast. Ok, so we’re going to give it to you one more time. Please, listen!
Sakura: (slow)どれす (doresu)
Peter: And English?
Sakura: “Dress”
Peter: Katakana fast and English fast.
Sakura: ドレス (doresu)
Peter: And?
Sakura: “Dress”
Peter: Yes! So, Try and get a feel for these words, because once you pick it up, it’s going to be very, very beneficial. Ok! Next we have?
Sakura: きれい (kirei)
Peter: Break it down!
Sakura: (slow)きれい (kirei)
Peter: And one time fast!
Sakura: きれい (kirei)
Peter: Now, in the dialogue, we said
Sakura: これはとてもきれいです。(Kore wa totemo kirei desu.)
Peter: Now, there’s something we want to point out about きれい (kirei). きれい (kirei) ends in?
Sakura: い (i)
Peter: But, it is a?
Sakura: na-adjective.
Peter: Adjective. Yes! Now, the reason for this is: i-adjectives do not end in ‘ei’, which is きれい (kirei). So, きれい (kirei) is a?
Sakura: na-adjective.
Peter: So, if I wanted to say “the beautiful dress”?
Sakura: きれいなドレス (kirei na doresu)
Peter: And, if we want to say “the beautiful shoes”?
Sakura: きれいな靴 (kirei na kutsu)
Peter: Just remember, ‘ei’ is not an i-adjective. Ok! So, きれい (kirei) is not an i-adjective. Next we have?
Sakura: 白い (shiroi)
Peter: This is?
Sakura: “White”
Peter: Ok! Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)しろい (shiroi)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: 白い (shiroi)
Peter: Ok! Next we have?
Sakura: ジャケット (jaketto)
Peter: And this is?
Sakura: “Jacket”
Peter: English and Japanese, one time fast.
Sakura: ジャケット (jaketto) – “jacket”
Peter: Now, the ‘t’ is quite easy. The ‘t’ goes to the T, T, と (to).
Sakura: と (to)
Peter: “Jacket” - ジャケット (jaketto). Ok! Next we have?
Sakura: センス (sensu)
Peter: And break it down.
Sakura: (slow)せんす (sensu)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: センス (sensu)
Peter: Ok! And what does this mean?
Sakura: “Taste”
Peter: Yes! As in fashion taste. You have good taste.
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: Ok! Music, oh, you have great taste!
Sakura: センスが良いですね。(Sensu ga ii desu ne.)
Peter: Yes, which is?
Sakura: “You have good taste.”
Peter: Thank you, Sakura.
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: That wasn’t intended for me? Lots in there.

Lesson focus

Peter: Ok! Now, let’s get into the main point of today’s lesson. The first main point is, can you give us the first sentence one more time?
Sakura: この赤い靴は素敵ですね。(Kono akai kutsu wa suteki desu ne.)
Peter: Ok! Give us the first part. ゆっくりお願いします。(Yukkuri onegai shimasu.)
Sakura: この赤い靴は (kono akai kutsu wa)
Peter: Stop! Yes! Give us just the first part.
Sakura: この赤い靴 (kono akai kutsu)
Peter: Ok! Now, this is a very easy structure to remember. In English we have “these red shoes”. Now, it’s the same in Japanese.
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: “This” comes first, next we have?
Sakura: Adjective.
Peter: And then we have?
Sakura: noun
Peter: Ok! It’s that easy, just so, you can think about it in English and it’s the same thing. And, what’s even better, in Japanese there’s no plural, so it’s always この (kono) things near me. And for things a bit further away it’s always?
Sakura: その (sono)
Peter: Yes! In English we have “this”, “these”.
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: Too confusing. That’s why Japanese, just…
Sakura: この (kono)
Peter: Ok! Then we add an adjective:
Sakura: 赤い (akai)
Peter: And?
Sakura: 靴 (kutsu)
Peter: Yes! Nice structure!
Sakura: Easy!
Peter: Easy! Ok! Now, again, the structure we gave you was at the i-adjective. Now, let’s put a na-adjective in there. Why don’t we say “these lovely shoes”?
Sakura: この素敵な靴 (kono suteki na kutsu)
Peter: Yes! Really emphasize the main point there.
Sakura: この素敵な靴 (kono suteki na kutsu)
Peter: Bingo! Ok! Now, what do we have that’s new in there?
Sakura: Negative for na-adjectives.
Peter: Ok! And how do we get the negative for na-adjectives?
Sakura: Add ではありません (de wa arimasen).
Peter: Ok! It’s that easy. Now, how easy is it, we’re going to get you in a little trick. We introduced you to a na-adjective a while back. But, he’s been undercover ever since. Undercover na-adjective. Now, Sakura, do you know what na-adjective I’m talking about?
Sakura: No!
Peter: That was great! Ok! I give you a hint: “like”.
Sakura: 好きな (suki na)
Peter: Yes! He’s been hiding all this time. Now, the reason we bring him up now is: how did we get the negative “I don’t like it!”?
Sakura: 好きではありません (suki de wa arimasen)
Peter: There it is, folks! Now, this is the way we’re going to turn na-adjectives into the negative form. Just add,
Sakura: ではありません (de wa arimasen)
Peter: That’s it! Now, if it doesn’t come together, just remember, we did 好き (suki), 好きではありません (suki de wa arimasen). That’s all! In the passage we had?
Sakura: きれいではありません (kirei de wa arimasen)
Peter: Yes! It’s a na-adjective “not beautiful”. That’s it! Just add ではありません (de wa arimasen).
Sakura: Right!
Peter: That’s it! We also had “nice”, which is?
Sakura: 素敵 (suteki)
Peter: How about “not nice”?
Sakura: 素敵ではありません (suteki de wa arimasen)
Peter: Yes! Ok! Yesterday we had?
Sakura: 静か (shizuka)
Peter: Negative is?
Sakura: 静かではありません (shizuka de wa arimasen)
Peter: Ok! There it is, folks!
Sakura: Easy!
Peter: Piece of cake!
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: Yes! So, we’re bringing him back because we heard in multiple places girls saying this word.
Sakura: Yes, we did!
Peter: I heard on the TV…
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: We saw it on commercials…
Sakura: Yes!
Peter: It’s back, baby!
Sakura: そう、ちょっとキュートな感じで。(Sō, chotto kyūto na kanji de.)

Outro

Peter: All right! Is that it for today?
Sakura: Right!
Peter: That’s it? All right! I don't want to go, Sakura. Get off my mics, Sakura, Sakura, Sakura!
Sakura: Stop acting! Ok!
Peter: Ok! So, you close it out! I don’t want to go! You say goodbye, you’ll be the bad one!
Sakura: Ok! See you tomorrow, everyone!
Hatsumi: See you!
Peter: Bye, bye!
