How to Use Your Japanese Learning Journal

Using your Japanese learning journal is simple. Just like a diary, you’ll want to write in it after you learn Japanese. That’s why the first step is…

Step 1: Learn Japanese.

Complete your JapanesePod101 lesson(s), review vocabulary, practice grammar, or study with your favorite Japanese learning resources.

Step 2: Write down what you learned.

This is where you get to journaling. After learning, open your journal and write out what you’ve learned: the new words, grammar points, and example sentences you learned. You can also write down any questions, points of confusion, useful expressions, or notes you want to remember.

Step 3: Review your notes and keep going.

It helps to look back and review what you’ve written.

Review any words or grammar points you’ve forgotten, then continue learning.

You don’t have to use this Japanese study journal every day. Just use it whenever you learn some Japanese, whether that’s daily or weekly.

You can also use it as an opportunity to practice writing Japanese, something you can also do with our Japanese writing worksheets.

If you’re an Intermediate or Advanced learner, consider writing your journal entries in Japanese.

Why Use the Japanese Learning Journal?

When you’re learning Japanese, it’s easy to forget what you studied last week… or even yesterday.

That’s where journaling comes in.

Instead of just moving on to the next lesson, take a few minutes to write down what you learned. Why? Because you’ll learn Japanese faster and remember more.

Here’s what the research says…

  • Explaining what you’ve learned in your own words improves your understanding and memory
  • Writing notes by hand can lead to better learning and better retention than typing them
  • Writing down what you’ve learned from memory helps you remember it longer
  • Reflecting on what you’ve learned and what you can improve can make future sessions more effective
  • Using newly learned words or grammar in your own sentences reinforces what you’ve learned
