INTRODUCTION
Naomi: ナオミです。
Chris: Chris here, When Did That Happen in Japan? このレッスンでは何を勉強するのでしょうか。
Naomi: 「とき」の使い方です。
Chris: You'll learn the usage of toki "When" clause.
Naomi: 実君、なみさん、桜子さん、が話しています。誰かがケガをしたみたいですよ。
Chris: The conversation is mainly between 3 friends, Minoru, Nami and Sakurako. It seems like someone got injured.
Naomi: 誰がケガをしたのでしょうか。
Chris: Yeah...I wonder who it could be that got hurt...
Naomi: 友達なので、カジュアルに話しています。
Chris: Since they are friends, they're speaking informally.
Naomi: では、聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
生徒1: 先生、栗林君は休みですか?
Chris: Teacher, is Kuribayashi absent today?
先生: ああ、道場に行くときに、転んで足を折ったそうだ。
Chris: Yeah, it seems like when he went to the martial arts hall, he tripped and broke his leg.
生徒1: ええ?転んで腰を打った?痛そう。
Chris: Huh? He tripped and hit his hip? That's got to hurt.
那須実: なあ、聞いたか?うわさによると、栗林、道場に行ったときに、腰を折ったみたいだぞ。
Chris: Hey, did you hear? There's a rumor that when Kuribayashi went to the martial arts hall, he broke his hip.
野沢菜味: ええ?大変!授業が終わってからみんなでお見舞いに行こうよ。
Chris: What? Yikes! Let's all go see him together after class is over.
大葉桜子: お見舞いに行く前に、お花を買わない?
Chris: Should we buy some flowers when we go to visit him?
那須実: じゃ、この赤い花がいいよ。栗林、赤が好きだし。
Chris: Okay, then let's go with these red flowers. Kuribayashi likes red.
野沢菜味: お見舞いに行く時、赤い花を持っていっちゃいけないって聞いた事がある。
Chris: I've heard that you're not supposed to take red flowers when you go visit someone in the hospital.
那須実: へー。じゃ、他の色にしよう。
Chris: Really? Then let's go with a different color.
桜子・菜味・実: こんにちは。これ、お見舞い。
Chris: Hello! This is a get-well gift for you.
栗林豆太郎: お見舞い?
Chris: Get-well gift?
那須実: 空手の練習中に腰を折ったって…。
Chris: We heard that you broke your hip during karate practice...
栗林豆太郎: 僕は、「道場に行くときに、転んで足を打った」って言ったんだけど…。
Chris: But I said that on the way to the martial arts hall, I tripped and hit my leg…
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: ケガをしたのは、栗林君ですね。
Naomi: そうです。でもたくさん誤解・・・というか、聞き間違いがありましたね。
Chris: Right. There were a lot of misunderstandings in this dialogue...!
みんな少しずつ間違えちゃったんですね~。先生は最初に、
Naomi: 道場に行くときに、転んで、足を折っった
Chris: When he went to the martial arts hall, he tripped and broke his leg.
Chris: といって、次の人は、
Naomi: 転んで、腰を打った(He tripped and bumped his hip?) 足(leg)と腰(lower back・hip)を間違えたんですね
Chris: で、実君は
Naomi: 道場に行ったときに、転んで、腰を打った。
Chris: When Kuribayashi went to the martial arts hall, he broke his hip.
Chris: でも、本当は、
Naomi: 道場に行くときに、転んで足を打った
Chris: On the way to the martial arts hall, I tripped and bumped my leg...
Chris: 最初の先生も間違えてたんですね~。
Naomi: ところで、腰はLower back だと思うんですが、訳はhipとしていましたね~。
Chris: 日本語の腰は、英語には訳すのが、難しいんですけど、He tripped and bumped his lower backだと、イメージしにくいので、わざとhipにしたみたいですよ。So the word腰 (koshi) is kind of hard to translate into English, it’s either sort of lower back or hip. So the translator, in this case, used hip to convey the Japanese meaning better.
Naomi: リスナーの皆さんは、面白い聞き間違え、ビックリした聞き間違えをしたことがありますか?是非教えてください。
Chris: Listeners, have you ever been surprised by something you misheard, or had a funny misunderstanding? Let us know!

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: では単語や表現を勉強しましょう
Chris: What are we looking at first? 最初の単語は何ですか?
Naomi: お見舞い
Chris: O-mimai or mimai is the action of visiting people who are sick. It can also refer to get-well letters or get-well gifts.
お見舞い gift は何がいいですか?
Naomi: うーん。フルーツとかお花 が多いと思いますよ。あとは、お金をあげる人もいます。
Chris: お金?
Naomi: そう。親戚とか。
Chris: Ah, relatives gives money.ところで、赤い花はダメなんですか? So according to the dialogue, red flowers are inappropriate.
Naomi: だめですね~。血(blood)と同じ色だから、ダメなんですよ。
Chris: Ah so it's because red is the color of blood, so it's not good to give red flowers as an お見舞い gift.
Naomi: お花を買うときは、お花屋さんに、聞いたほうがいいですよ。
Chris: ああ、その方が安全ですね。どんな風に聞くんですか?
Naomi: うーん。例えば、「お見舞いに行くんですが、どんなお花がいいでしょうか?」
Chris: "I'm going to visit my friend in the hospital, and I'm wondering what kind of flowers would be good?" OK. What are we looking at next? 次は何ですか?
Naomi: 中 as in 練習中
Chris: "During practice", "in the middle of practice"
中 is a suffix. This 中 in 練習中 means "in the middle of...".
Naomi: 例えば、電話 is phone 電話中 is
Chris: "in the middle of a phone call" "on the phone"
Naomi: 中には他の意味もありますね。
Chris: Right. This suffix chū or jū has a few different usages.
Naomi: 例えば、一日中
Chris: "throughout the day"
Naomi: 午前中
Chris: "throughout the morning"
この、ちゅう じゅう は "throughout a period of time" という意味ですね。
Naomi: そうです。
他の中は、「日本中」
Chris: "all over Japan"
Naomi: 世界中
Chris: "the whole world"
So this ちゅう also has the meaning of "whole-" or "all over".
OK. Let's recap. So the suffix ちゅう or じゅう can be translated in three different ways.
The first meaning is "in the middle of..."
Naomi: 例えば、「会議中」
Chris: in the middle of a meeting
The second meaning is "throughout"
Naomi: 「一年中」
Chris: "throughout the year"
And the last one is "all over"
Naomi: ヨーロッパ中
Chris: All over Europe

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use toki, meaning "at the time when."
Naomi: 今から、2つの文を読みます。意味の違いがわかりますか?
Chris: Naomi-sensei is going to read two sentences. See if you can tell the difference in the meaning. Sentence 1...
Naomi: 部屋を掃除するとき、窓を開ける。
Chris: OK. Sentence 2?
Naomi: 部屋を掃除したとき、窓を開ける。
Chris: Can you tell the difference? Even if you can't, you'll be able to tell the difference by the end of this lesson.
OK. Naomi-sensei, can we hear the first sentence again?
Naomi: 部屋を掃除するとき、窓を開ける。
Chris: Let's break down.部屋を掃除する(I clean the room)とき(at the time when) まどを開ける(I open the window)
Naomi: これは、[部屋を掃除する前に、窓を開ける」という意味です。
Chris: So the first sentence means "Before I clean the room, I'll open the window "
[informal non-past form of a verb] plus [toki] means "Right before ...,"or "before.."
OK. How about the second sentence?
Naomi: 部屋を掃除したとき、窓を開ける。
Chris: Let's break it down.部屋を掃除した(I cleaned the room)とき(at the time when) まどを開ける(I open the window)
Naomi: 「部屋を掃除した」は past ですね。だから、この意味は、
「部屋の掃除をして、その後で、窓を開ける」という意味です。
Chris: So this sentence means ."After I clean the room, I'll open the window ."
So [ informal past form of a verb ] plus [toki] means "right after ...,"or "after..."
Naomi: 例えば、「ご飯を食べるとき、手を洗う」
Chris: "taberu plus toki". "non past" plus "toki" means "right before..."
So this means "Right before I eat, I wash my hands"
OK, listeners, Listen and repeat after Naomi. "Right before I eat, I wash my hands"
Naomi: ご飯を食べるとき、手を洗う
Naomi: 「ご飯を食べたとき、手を洗う」
Chris: "tabeta plus toki". "Past form" plus "toki" means "right after"...so, this sentence means "Right after I eat, I wash my hands."
OK, listeners, Listen and repeat after Naomi. "Right after I eat, I wash my hands"
Naomi: ご飯を食べたとき、手を洗う
Naomi: 大丈夫ですかね?
Chris: むずかしいですね~。
Naomi: そうですね。
Chris: Let's recap with a quiz. When you start eating, you say "itadakimasu" right? How do you describe this in Japanese? Would it be... one...
Naomi: ご飯を食べるとき、いただきます という。
Chris: or two...
Naomi: ご飯を食べたとき、いただきます という。
Chris: Which would be correct?
Chris: Naomi-sensei? Which is correct?
Naomi: ご飯を食べるとき、いただきます という。
Chris: "Right before we eat, we say ‘itadakimasu’".
直美先生、Would [ご飯を食べたとき、いただきます という。]be strange?
Naomi: はい。ちょっと変ですね~。
Naomi: ところで、クリスさんは、ご飯を食べるとき、手を洗って、いただきますって言います?
Chris: 言いますよ。
Naomi: 手も洗います?
Chris: 手も、もちろん洗います。はい、しっかり幼稚園から...
Naomi: あの、それは習ってきているんですね。
Chris: そうですね、はい。
Naomi: えらい、えらい。
Chris: いえいえ。
