Lesson Transcript

Numbers from 1001 to 10000. In just a few minutes, you are going to learn the numbers up to 10,000. In the previous lessons, you learned the numbers up to 1000. Let’s start by reviewing the numbers from 100 to 1000. (hyaku, hyaku. nihyaku, nihyaku.) (sanbyaku, sanbyaku. yonhyaku, yonhyaku.) (gohyaku, gohyaku, roppyaku, roppyaku.) (nanahyaku, nanahyaku. happyaku, happyaku.) (kyūhyaku, kyūhyaku. sen, sen.) Okay let’s go through the multiples of 1000 one by one. To create multiples of 1000, you simply put a number in front of せん。 (sen.) Pay attention, we will have similar sound changes for 3, 6 and 8. You remember, 1000, it’s せん。 (sen.) . So what’s 2000 2 に。 (ni.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) so literally 2000 にせん。 (ni-sen.) what about 3000 3 さん。 (san.) 1000 ぜん。 (zen.) (sen.) turned into ぜん。 (go.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) (gosen.) 6000 6 ろく。 (roku.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) This time, せん (sen) doesn’t change. (sen.) So here, the はち (hachi) turns into a は。 (ha.) (kyū-sen.) So this time we only had two exceptions with さんぜん (san-zen) and はっせん (ha-ssen) さんぜん、さん、ぜん、さんぜん。 (san-zen, san, zen, san-zen.) (ha-ssen, ha, sen, ha-ssen.) Okay let’s move on to 10,000. What’s 10000? (jū sen?) No it’s いちまん。 (ichi, man.) (ichi-man.) I am going to show you the Japanese currency. The Japanese currency is yen. In Japanese it’s えん (en) いちえん。 (ichi-en.) (go-en.) (Go-hyaku-en. Sen'en. Ni-sen-en. Go-sen-en. Ichi-man-en.) Finally we have a quiz. Are you ready? How much is this? (Ikura desu ka?) How much is this? (Go-hyaku ni-jū go-en.) (Ikura desu ka?) How much is this? (Ni-sen san-byaku-en.) Great job. You’ve learned the numbers up to 10,000.

Thank you for your question.
Do you mean a number ‘0’?
If so it is ‘zero’ and ‘rei.’
Japanese people have two readings for that.
