Let’s draw today’s kanji. |
We are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the kanji reading. |
We have the On readings and the Kun readings. Long story short, the On readings come from Chinese and the Kun readings come from Japanese. |
The On reading for this kanji is ジン (jin) and ニン (nin) and the Kun reading for this kanji is ひと (hito) . |
Now remember the hint that I was telling you about? Let’s look at that now. |
Picture a person walking one foot in the front and the other foot in the back. Now it looks like a human. |
Let’s look at how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order, it’s very important. It’s easy 1, 2. Let’s try it again. 1, 2. |
Now let’s look at some sample words. |

The On reading for this kanji is jin and nin. First we have jin にほんじん (Nihon-jin) it means Japanese. Next we have nin, さんにん (san-nin) you see the person kanji here. It means three person. |
Next we have Kun reading. The Kun reading for this kanji is hito. Here we have ひとかげ (hitokage) which means a person’s shadow. |
