INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Anthony: Anthony here. Sniff out the best Japanese phrases.
Naomi: 今日は、「鼻」を使った表現を勉強しましょう。
Natsuko: 今まで目と口を使った表現を紹介たから、今度は「鼻」なんですね。
Anthony: In this lesson, you will learn expressions using 鼻 (hana), “nose.”
Natsuko: 会社で2人の同僚が会話をしています。
Anthony: The conversation is between 2 colleagues and takes place at an office.
Natsuko: 「同期」といっているのでこの二人は同じ年に会社に入ったようですが、実はあまり仲はよくないようです。
Anthony: It sounds like they joined the company in the same year. However they can't get along with each other.
Natsuko: 会社の同期ですから、丁寧な会話ではありません。
Anthony: Since both speakers belong to the same social status, they are using informal Japanese.
Natsuko: では、早速聞いてみましょう。
Anthony: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Natsuko: 次は英語が入ります。
森田:フフフン
Anthony: Hmm, hmm, hmmm…
上原:どうしたんだ?珍しいな。鼻歌なんか歌って。
Anthony: What’s with you? I never hear you humming!
森田:今度、俺、ベストセールスマンに表彰されるんだ。
Anthony: I’m getting the award for best salesman.
上原:へぇえええ。す、すごいなぁ。俺も、同期として、鼻が高いよ。おめでとう。
Anthony: Wha… Wow. Th… That’s great. As someone who entered the company at the same time, that makes me proud. Congratulations.
森田:ま、上原も、せいぜい頑張れよ。お前、鼻が利くだろ。
Anthony: Well, you should try your hardest too Uehara – you’ve got a great sense of smell.
上原:鼻が利く?
Anthony: Great sense of smell?
森田:だって、買ってくれそうな客を見つけるの得意じゃないか。
Anthony: Yeah, you’re really good at sniffing out customers who’re ready to buy.
: クンクンクンクン。買ってください。ワン!ワン!ははは!
Anthony: Sniff, sniff, buy, buy! Woof, woof, woof! Hahaha!
上原:何だ、その言い方。鼻につくな。
Anthony: Well you don’t have to say it that way! That really ticks me off…
: ベストセールスマンになったからって、そんなに鼻にかけるなよ。
Just because you’re “best salesman,” you don’t have to get all cocky.
森田:おいおい、落ち着けよ。
Anthony: Hey come on, don’t get steamed.
森田:ま、お前もベストセールスマンになれるもんなら、なってみろよ。
If you think you can be best salesman then go ahead and try.
: そうすれば、俺の鼻をあかせるじゃないか。ははは。
That would be the perfect way to outwit me. Hahaha!
上原:お前のその鼻、へし折ってやる!
Anthony: You watch, I'll knock you down a peg! (lit- I’m gonna snap your nose off!)
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: いかがでしたでしょうか。7個鼻を使った表現が入っていましたね。日本人って、自分を指すときに鼻を指しますね。
Natsuko: あ、そうですよね。
Naomi:これって、変に見えました、最初?アンソニーさんは?
Anthony:そうですね、最初、慣れないですね、やっぱり鼻のことを話されてるかと思って。
Naomi:自分のことじゃなくて?
Natsuko:自分のことを指すときはどこを指すんですか?
Anthony: 胸とかですね。
Naomi:
Naomi:エジプトの文字とかね。
Naomi: 辞書によると、これは鼻を正面から見た図なんだそうです。
Natsuko: じゃ、この下のひょろひょろは髭ですか?
Anthony: 鼻毛じゃないですか?
Natsuko:どっちかっていうと、そういう見えますよね。
Naomi:でも、これは鼻毛ではなくて、息だそうです。フーンでいう風に鼻から息を出すと、空気が出ますよね。この空気を線で表してるんだそうです。
Natsuko: なんか、マンガみたいですね。
Anthony: So, the character for 鼻 or nose in Japanese is a pictograph expressing what a nose looks like, so the two lines you see below are supposed to be a breath coming out of the nose.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi:では、単語に入っていきたいと思います。
Anthony: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word and phrase look at is
Naomi: 表彰
Anthony: official commendation, prize-giving
Naomi: これは名詞です。後ろに式ceremony をつけて「表彰式」なら(Anthony, awarding ceremony) 後ろに台standをつけて「表彰台」なら(Anthony, platform of honor, winner's podium) 動詞は?
Natuko: 表彰する(Anthony, to honor someone, to commend)
Naomi: ダイアログには?
Natsuko: 俺、ベストセールスマンに表彰されるんだ。
Anthony: I’m getting the award for best salesman.
Naomi: ~に表彰される と言っていますが、勿論、として をつかって、ベストセールスマンとして表彰されるといっても同じです。次の単語は?
Natsuko: せいぜい
Anthony: do your best, at the most
Natsuko: これは、例文と一緒に見てみましょう。「あのお店は安い。2人でおなか一杯食べて飲んでもせいぜい2000円だ。」
Anthony: That restaurant is so cheap. It'll cost 2000yen at the most for 2 people to get full.
Natsuko: でも、今日の会話のように、「せいぜい 頑張って。」 Well , do you best you can というように、相手の動作についていうと、ちょっと挑戦的ですね。
Naomi: そうですね。前に、[できるものならしてみろ。」[デートに誘えるものなら誘ってみろ]を勉強しましたが、ちょっと似ていますね。話している人が「無理だ」と思っているんですね。
Anthony: When you use せいぜい for someone else's action, it sounds challenging.
Natsuko:ちょっと皮肉な感じになりますよね。
Naomi:では、今日の文法に入っていきたいと思います。

Lesson focus

Naomi: 今日は鼻 "nose" を使った表現です。 先ず最初に、ダイアログに出てきた鼻を使った表現をささっと、英語と一緒に復習しましょう。
Natsuko: 鼻歌
Anthony: humming
Natsuko: 鼻が高い
Anthony: “to be proud of”
Natsuko: 鼻につく
Anthony: “to get sick of”
Natsuko: 鼻が利く
Anthony: "to have a good nose" or "to find out something advantageous quickly."
Natsuko: 鼻にかける
Anthony: "to be proud of oneself" or "to blow one's horn."
Natsuko: 鼻をあかす
Anthony: "to take someone down."
Natsuko: 鼻をへし折る
Anthony: "to knock someone down a peg."
Naomi: たくさんありますが、まず、鼻が利くを勉強しましょう。ダイアログの中で、森田さんが
Natsuko: クンクンクンクン。買ってください。ワン!ワン!
Anthony: Sniff, sniff, buy, buy! Woof, woof, woof! Hahaha!
Naomi: ととても失礼な事を言っていましたが、イメージとしたら、正にこれです。クンクンとにおいをかいでいるイメージです。で、何が自分にとっていいことなのか、においで判断しているってイメージ。
Natsuko: そうですね。「利く」というのは"to function adequately"という意味ですから、「鼻が利く」は
Anthony: 「鼻が利く」literally means "the nose function adequately" and it indicates one's ability to keenly sense something advantageous.
Natsuko: 次は「鼻をへし折る」
Anthony: "to knock someone down a peg" or “to wipe the smirk off someone’s face.”
Naomi: へし折るというのはおる to break のもっと強い言い方です。「強い力で折ると」いう意味ですね。
Natsuko: 鼻をへし折る。
Anthony: literally means "to break one's nose "
Natsuko: でも、これは、実際にパンチするという意味ではないです。まぁ・・・実際にパンチするという意味でも使われる事もあるとは思いますが、大体の場合は、プライドが高すぎる人のプライドをきずつける という意味で使います。 この鼻はプライドの意味ですね。
Anthony: This expression is used when you want to beat someone who is arrogant or too self confident. Hana o heshioru literally means "to break off someone's nose." In this case, hana is used as a symbol for someone's pride. So it doesn't necessarily mean to physically break someone's nose.
Naomi: 英語では鼻っていうのはプライドの意味があるんですか?
Anthony: ま、鼻を使った言い回しは、英語はこれほど多くないと思うんですけども、人を見下ろすさま、鼻が高いっていうのは通用すると思うんですよね。言葉にするというよりも、しぐさでこう示すことが多い。
Natsuko: こうやって鼻を上に向けるような動作ですね。

Outro

Naomi: みなさんの話している話している言葉では鼻を使った表現ありますか。あったら、教えてください。
Natsuko: それじゃ、また。
Anthony: See you next lesson.
