Momoyo: みなさんこんにちは。Momoyoです。
Yasunori: Yasunoriです。

Lesson focus

Marky: Marky here and welcome to part 2 of our crazy 岡山弁 spectacular. So before we jump into the conversation, I think the listeners would be really interested to know a little bit about Okayama and what is Okayama famous for?
Momoyo: About food, peaches.
Marky: Peaches?
Momoyo: しいたけ
Marky: Shiitake mushrooms.
Momoyo: And ままかり
Marky: ままかり?
Momoyo: Uhoo…
Marky: What’s that?
Momoyo: Small fish like 10 centimeters fish.
Marky: How do you eat it?
Momoyo: In Sushi.
Marky: Sushi!
Momoyo: And also dried fish するめ
Marky: Ah like a kind of fish jerky to eat with beer and things like that.
Momoyo: Yeah.
Marky: Ah so now that you guys know a little bit about what is famous in Okayama, we can get into our conversation.
Momoyo: I forgot one thing. 桃太郎 is famous.
Marky: It’s like a famous Japanese story.
Momoyo: There is the 桃太郎 statue in front of Okayama station.
Marky: Really. I know the story, it’s really, really famous.
Momoyo: Yeah.
Marky: Yeah even Americans probably know…
Momoyo: Really? Oh that’s interesting.
Marky: Yeah and it came from Okayama.
Momoyo: I think so.
Marky: Great. Well in our conversation coming up, we have no peaches, no fish, no 桃太郎 but we do have a lot of interesting vocabulary and grammar. So without further ado, let’s get right into the conversation.
Sakura:
Sakura: 今度は英語が入ります。
ヤス: わし、確定申告行かんといけん。いつまでじゃったかのぉ?
I have to go file the final income tax return, when is the deadline?
モモ: 来週一杯じゃった思うわ。早う行かれえ。
I think it’s not until the end of next week. You better go.
でも何であんなに税金持って行かれるんで?
But why do they charge so much tax?
もうかなわんわ。ほんま、今後の日本はどうなるん?おえりゃあせなぁ。
I can’t stand it. What’s going on in this country, it’s hopeless.
ヤス: おえ、変なことしたんじゃねんか?
Hey, what are you doing? Don’t do anything embarrassing.
モモ: いいや。この前市役所に行って、私らの税金が宴会に使われとらんか確かめてきただけ。
I just went to the municipal office the other day and confirmed that. None of the staff there have ever partied on our money, that’s all.
ヤス: おえおえ、なんしょんなー?恥ずかしいことするなよ。
Oh man! What did you do? Don’t do anything embarrassing.
モモ: あんたがこの前私の花柄の傘、会社にさして行ったのよりは、かなりマシで。
Well, remember when you went to work with my flower pattern umbrella, I think I am still doing better than that.
Marky: All right, so we had another fight.
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: Lots of fights for this 岡山弁 series. It’s great. I like the drama and again I also really enjoyed like the intonation. I think it’s very different from what I hear every day in Tokyo. So it’s quite refreshing. Okay let’s jump right into the vocab. All right, so our first word is
Momoyo: 確定申告
Marky: Final income tax return.
Momoyo: かくていしんこく。確定申告。
Marky: And this is standard Japanese, this is not 岡山弁. Okay and our next word is
Momoyo: 来週いっぱい
Marky: Until the end of next week.
Momoyo: らいしゅういっぱい。来週いっぱい。
Marky: This is also standard Japanese. Okay our next word.
Momoyo: 早う。
Marky: Quickly, early.
Momoyo: はよう。早う。
Marky: And this is dialect.
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: How would we say this in standard Japanese?
Momoyo: 早く
Marky: Okay next word.
Momoyo: 税金
Marky: Tax. Again this is also standard Japanese and our next word.
Momoyo: かなわん。
Marky: Too much, overwhelming. Is this standard Japanese?
Momoyo: No, this is 岡山弁.
Marky: What would this be in the standard language?
Momoyo: かなわない。
Marky: Okay. So too much. Okay our next word.
Momoyo: ほんま
Marky: Really, true. Now this is a high frequency word. I hear this one on TV all the time or even in conversation with friends of mine from like Kansai area.
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: What is this in standard Japanese?
Momoyo: ほんとう。
Marky: Okay. So again, really or true. Okay so in Tokyo, I hear まじで a lot for like really or like you gonna be kidding me. Now how could we use this word in a similar expression?
Momoyo: ほんまか? but girls usually say ほんま?まじ?. Also まじ is used – highly used in Okayama.
Marky: But okay, so guys will say ほんまか and girls just ほんま
Momoyo: ほんま
Marky: Okay. Our next word is
Yasunori: おえ
Marky: Okay. This is another guy’s word and this is a way to get someone’s attention. If a woman is trying to get someone’s attention, what would they say?
Momoyo: あのね or あのな. Guys says あのな but always it is rougher. When you want to drink a cup of tea, usually husband say おーい、お茶 and that おーい refers to おえ in Okayama.
Marky: Okay. Yeah in Tokyo, I hear おい. All right, our next word is,
Momoyo: 市役所
Marky: The city municipal office. This is also standard Japanese, not dialect. Okay our next word.
Momoyo: 私ら
Marky: It is we or us. In standard Japanese, what would this be?
Momoyo: 私たち
Marky: And can this word be used by guys and girls or is this specifically girl’s word?
Momoyo: Yes this is a girl’s word. Guy would say
Yasunori: わしら
Marky: わしら
Yasunori: わしら
Marky: That’s very cool. Okay our next word.
Momoyo: 宴会
Marky: A party. So this was a fight and this word 宴会 showed up which is party and you had a kind of like sarcastic twist in here ______ (0:08:58) joke about the staff or politicians having a party on your money.
Momoyo: Yes sometimes or very often recently, we hear on TV that a lot of politicians spend our tax and they buy massage chair and they party a lot.
Marky: With the tax money?
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: So this was kind of a political statement. All right, our next word.
Momoyo: 花柄
Marky: Flower pattern. This is also standard Japanese and our next word.
Momoyo: さす
Marky: This is to open an umbrella or hold an umbrella. Okay and our last word.
Momoyo: まし
Marky: And this is to be better, like a better situation. This is also standard Japanese and kind of high frequency word I think.
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: Okay. So we had a couple of interesting phrases in here. The first phrase was
Momoyo: おえりゃあせなぁ。
Marky: And what would this be in standard Japanese?
Momoyo: だめだな。
Marky: So this is a phrase that you would use when the situation is like desperate or hopeless and you are just like, oh man!
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: So yeah, this phrase is based on a negative form of a nonexistent verb. So like you don’t say おえる. So just おえん which is just like だめ in standard Japanese. Yeah, this sounds kind of cool. Actually, can you say this for us again one more time but like slowly?
Momoyo: おえりゃあせなぁ。
Marky: And one time fast.
Momoyo: おえりゃあせなぁ。
Marky: Very cool, very cool. You can use this word if you are angry or just like hopeless situation.
Momoyo: Yeah in hopeless situation. When you are angry, you should rather say 気がわりぃ。
Marky: 気がわりぃ。
Momoyo: Like you learned in lesson 1.
Marky: Umm…
Momoyo: Yeah like when you get an F on your test, you should say あー、おえりゃあせなぁ。
Marky: だめだな like that. All right and next interesting phrase was
Yasunori: なんしょんな
Marky: And what would this be in standard Japanese?
Marky: 何してるんだ。
Marky: So this is like, what the heck are you doing? Okay so this is pretty simple. 何してるの or like what are you doing? Is this a strong expression?
Momoyo: Yes it is.
Marky: What if we want to make it stronger?
Momoyo: You should say this faster without な. なんしょん!
Yasunori: なんしょん!
Marky: なんしょん! Oh that’s fun.
Momoyo: お父さんが子供を怒るとき。
Marky: So when you are angry, you can use this one like what the heck are you doing! What’s your problem? Okay now, you can also use this to ask your friends what they are doing, right?
Momoyo: Yes.
Marky: So how would you ask your friend like, oh what are you doing right now?
Momoyo: Very slowly and gently, we say 今なにしょん?

Outro

Marky: 今なにしょん? Umm what are you doing right now. All right, and on that note, we are going to have to wrap things up. That’s all the time we have today unfortunately. I highly recommend that you check out the learning center and practice with the line by line audio so you can get this intonation correct because the intonation is different from standard Japanese. So if you want to use these lines correctly, you really want to practice repeating after the native speakers. All right, that’s all the time we have today. So let me see if I can remember the 岡山弁 goodbye じゃな。
Momoyo: じゃな、みなさん。
Yasunori: じゃな。
