Natsuko: 第39回中級レッスン、この番組はエァクレーレンの提供でお送りしています。こんにちは、Natsukoです。
Yoshi: Yoshiです。
Peter: Peter here. Intermediate lesson #39.
Natsuko: 今日は、Murakami Agnesさんのシリーズの第4回ですよね。
Yoshi: そうですね。今日はアパートを見に行くんですよね。
Natsuko: あ、確かそうでしたね。いいところが見つかるでしょうか?
Yoshi: さぁ、どうでしょうね。
Natsuko: 不動産屋さんしだいですよね。
Peter: Finding a good place depends on the real estate agent.
Yoshi: でも、不動産屋さんはちょっとあやしくなかったですか?
Peter: Yeah that is one shady guy, really shady.
Natsuko: じゃ、うまくいくかどうかさっそく聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Hello.
村上アグネス: お忙しい中時間を割いていただきましてありがとうございます。
Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule.
不動産屋: いやいや、気にしないで。これが仕事だから。それに今日はそんなに忙しくないんだよ。
No, no it’s no trouble at all. After all, it’s my job and actually I am not that busy.
村上アグネス: そうですか。
I see.
不動産屋: じゃあ、一つ目の所に行ってみましょうか。
All righty then, let’s go and see the first one.
村上アグネス: はい、お願いします。
Yes please.
不動産屋: ここが、6万5千円のアパートです。
This is the ¥65000 apartment.
村上アグネス: え、写真と少し違いませんか?あっゴキブリ。ここって高い割には汚い限り。ちょっとここは...
Really, isn’t it a bit different from the photo? Look roaches, this place is the dirtiest even though it’s expensive. This place is really not for me.
不動産屋: まあ、駅から近いからとても便利ですけどね。
But it’s very close to the station, so it’s convenient.
村上アグネス: 近いのはいいですけど線路の隣だと少しうるさくないですか?
Nearby the station is good, but the railway track is next door. So isn’t it a bit loud?
不動産屋: まあ、すぐに慣れると思うけど。
Yeah but you get used to it quick.
村上アグネス: ちょっと、写真で見たのと雲泥の差があるな。
The difference between the photo and what I have seen is night and day.
不動産屋: まあ、こんな感じかな。つぎの所も行ってみますか?
Well this is kind of what the place is. Shall we try the next one?
村上アグネス: そうですね。
Yes please.
不動産屋: さあ、こちらです。古い建物だけど、手入れされてるからきれいだよ。
Here it is. It’s an old building however it’s kept in good condition. So it’s clean.
村上アグネス: へー、とても感じのいい所ですね。
Oh it’s nice here.
不動産屋: 日当たりもいいですよ。さあ、どうぞ。
It gets a lot of sunshine too. Here we are, please go in.
村上アグネス: うわー、新しい畳、このにおいがたまらない。
Wow! New Tatami, I can’t resist this smell.
不動産屋: この前変えてもらったばかりですからね。窓の外を見てごらんなさい。
We just had new ones put in recently. Look out the window.
村上アグネス: はい、すごい、陽も入るしきれいですね。
Wow! What a view. There is lots of sunshine and it’s so beautiful.
不動産屋: まあ、駅からもそう遠くはないから。
Also it’s not that far from the station.
村上アグネス: 月5万円ですよね。
¥50000 per month right?
不動産屋: そうです。
Yes ma’am.
村上アグネス: 私、ここに決めます。
I will take it.
不動産屋: ありがとうございます。ではお店に戻って手続きさせて頂きますね。
Thank you very much. Let’s go back to the office and I will have you take care of some paperwork.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Natsukoさん、どうでしたか?
Natsuko: ずいぶんいい部屋があったみたいですね。最初の部屋はひどかったみたいですけど。
Peter: うーん、その気持ちよくわかります。I have had many bad rooms here in Japan.
Natsuko: There are both.
Peter: Yeah.
Natsuko: Good ones and bad ones.
Peter: Just kind of a result, a consequence having no money.
Natsuko: That’s true.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Natsuko: それでは、今日のVocabularyとPhraseを見ていきましょう。 最初のは、Phraseです。じかんをさく
Peter: To make time, to spare one’s time.
Natsuko: このPhraseは、時間Timeという言葉と、さく、これはsplitという意味なんですけれども、この両方の言葉が含まれています。ですから、TimeはSplitできるものではないんですけれども、時間を切って、切り取って何かのためにReserveしておくっていう、そういう感じなんですよね。
Peter: Yeah I think that’s a very good analogy. You are splitting the time making that time for somebody or something. So we have time and to split, the verb to split. So you are splitting and making time. I think it works quite well.
Natsuko: じゃ、Yoshiさん、例文をお願いします。
Yoshi: 彼は、貴重な時間をさいてインタビューに応じた。
Peter: He spared his precious time to accept the interview.
Natsuko: あ、次の言葉はYoshiさんにお願いしよう。
Peter: なんか言いたいことありますか?Natsukoさん。
Natsuko: 私この言葉きらいです。
Peter: まぁ、わかるね。Yoshiさん、どうぞ。
Yoshi: はい、私の得意分野です。次のキーワードは、ごきぶり
Peter: Cockroach. I have had too many run-ins with these in Japan.
Yoshi: 多いですよね、日本には。
Natsuko: 会社でも見ますよね。Peterさん、ちゃんと食べたものかたづけておいて下さいね。
Peter: すいませんでした。そうだよね。Yoshiさん、覚えてますね。夜になると、ゴキブリが出てきます。会社の方ですね。
Yoshi: はい、ゴキブリホイホイ置いてるんですけどね。
Peter: ホイホイって何ですか?
Yoshi: もう日本では、とても有名なCockroach Trapのことですね。
Peter: ゴキブリホイホイ
Yoshi: はい、小さな紙でできた家の形をしていて、中にゴキブリのえさと地面はのりGlueがはってあるので、ゴキブリがえさを食べに入ってきたところをつかまえるCockroach Trapですね。
Peter: So it’s like a little house made of paper and on the inside, they have the Roach bait plus the sticky floor like glue. Once you go in there, you never get out.
Natsuko: よく会社に置いてありますよね。
Peter: 効かないみたいですね。
Natsuko: 効きませんね。
Peter: Yeah it doesn’t work too well ごきぶり…
Natsuko: あ、ちょっときらいだから、もうこの話題やめましょう。
Peter: でもあともうひとつ
Natsuko: はい。
Peter: 飛べるんですね。
Natsuko: そんなこと説明しなくても、日本のゴキブリもアメリカのRoachも一緒だと思うよ。
Nothing different.
Peter: It’s very different.
Natsuko: そうかな。
Peter: I have never seen a flying roach in the US.
Natsuko: But they do 違うの?
Peter: Yoshi?
Yoshi: 日本のゴキブリはかみかぜごきぶり、They come flying at you. They can attack flying.
Peter: Super special 特徴
Natsuko: So you better watch out when you come to Japan for Kamikaze Roaches、はい、次の、次のキーワード行きますよ。
Peter: お願いします、早目に。
Natsuko: 次のキーワードは、せんろ
Peter: Railway track, railroad track.
Natsuko: Yoshiさん、例文をお願いします。
Yoshi: 男の人がホームから線路に落ちました
Peter: A man fell off the platform on to the train track. Natsuko san、
Natsuko: はい。
Peter: もっと明るい、明るくて積極的な例文お願いします。
Natsuko: 線路で、明るくて積極的な例文てどんなのですか?
Peter: A little more positive ひかれていなくてよかったですね。
Natsuko: そうですね。あのー、酔っぱらいの方は気を付けて下さいね。
Peter: Oh ゴキブリと死体、これが中級ですね、Natsukoさん。
Natsuko: は?
Peter: はい、次、次。
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、うんでいのさ
Peter: As different as night and day on a completely different level.
Yoshi: この「雲泥の差」の「雲泥(うんでい)」この最初の漢字は雲(くも)ですね。 Cloud そして、ふたつ目の「雲泥」の「泥(でい)」これは、「どろ」という意味ですね。 dirt この「雲泥の差」「差(さ)」というのは、 difference なので、 The difference between cloud and dirt つまりsky とGroundほどのDifferenceがある、という意味になります。
Peter: So when we translate into English, as different as night and day, completely different. Opposite ends of the spectrum. この表現がとても好きです。たまに使います。
Natsuko: どうしてですか?どんなふうに使いますか?
Peter: スポーツについて話すときに、たまにこの表現を使います。
Natsuko: あー、たとえば、選手の実力に雲泥の差がある、とか
Peter: These two players are in completely different levels. そんな感じ。
Natsuko: そうですね。だからレベルの違いがはっきりしているときに使いますね。次のキーワードは、ていれ
Peter: Care.
Natsuko: Yoshiさん、例文をお願いします。
Yoshi: 手入れの行き届いた庭だ。
Peter: It’s a very clean and tidy garden.
Yoshi: 毎日の肌の手入れが大切です。
Peter: It’s important to follow the daily skin care routine.
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、てつづき
Peter: Procedure.
Natsuko: これは、よく使う言葉ですよね。
Yoshi: そうですね。Natsukoさん、例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: 手続きが完了しました。
Peter: The procedure was completed.
Natsuko: 注文を取り消すには、面倒な手続きが必要なんだ。
Peter: You have to go through troublesome procedures to cancel the order.
Natsuko: 次のキーワードは、たまらない
Peter: Can’t get enough of, killing one.
Natsuko: 何か、いいこと、すごく好きなことについて使われることが多いんですが、とても悪いことにも使います。両方の意味があります。
Peter: So you can use this for both good and bad things. Can we have an example of something good.
Natsuko: このラーメンのスープがたまらないんだ。
Peter: I can’t get enough of this Ramen’s broth. This Ramen’s broth is killing me.

Lesson focus

Natsuko: それでは、今日のGrammar Pointに移りましょう。今日のポイントは、たかいわりには、きたないかぎり
Peter: Two points in this sentence. Natsuko san, first point.
Natsuko: 最初のポイントは、「割には」という表現ですね。
Peter: With respect to, considering. Here we have an adjective followed by
Natsuko: 割には
Peter: Now this expression means with respect to considering. Considering it’s expensive 高い expensive, 割には considering its expensive something, something. Again adjective followed by 割に. Can we have an example?
Natsuko: 安い割にはいい商品です。
Peter: This is a good product considering it’s inexpensive.
Natsuko: この女の子は、年の割には大人びています。
Peter: This girl is matured considering her age or she is mature for her age. In the first example, we had an い-adjective. So it’s an い- adjective followed by 割に. We can attach it directly. When 割には or 割に is preceded by a noun or な- adjective, we need the particle
Natsuko: の
Peter: Okay now on to
Natsuko: 限り
Peter: To the extreme. Now before we start, there are many uses for 限り. This use is one of the most difficult. It’s very high level grammar point, okay. Just want to get that out of the way. So there are many uses again for this one. In this case, we are talking about the extreme of the adjective preceding it.
Natsuko: きたない限り
Peter: Dirty, extreme. The dirtiest, to the extreme of dirtiness. Single life flashing before my eyes.
Natsuko: Right. ですから、とても強い表現になります。
Peter: Okay Yoshi san, can we have an example?
Yoshi: 彼がここにいないのは、残念な限りです。
Peter: It is extremely regrettable that he is not here to the boundaries of the meaning of the word preceding it.

Outro

Peter: Okay more about this inside the PDF. That’s going to do for today.
Natsuko: じゃ、また来週。
Yoshi: またね。
