INTRODUCTION
(Ohayō jōjitaun. Yoshi desu.)
Peter: Peter here. Yoshi-san, it's just the two of us today.
Yoshi: はい。 (Hai.) Guys’ union.
Peter: Just for the beginning. The girls from what I am told are on the way. So hopefully, they will get here soon. I believe it’s Natsuko-san who is going to be joining us today.
Yoshi: Sounds good.
Peter: Yep. Now in today’s lesson, we will be reviewing numbers, counters and vegetables, an interesting combination. Now in Japanese, object counters are determined by what is being counted. For example, flat objects have one counter where round objects have a different one. In today’s lesson, we will cover some of the more widely used counters plus some basic vegetables and more money. Also today is the day we try our bonus practice track. Now if you stop by japanesepod101.com, there will be a bonus track playable on the site or downloadable. Inside this track, we have a listening comprehension drill and a drill for practicing speaking. We would love to hear your feedback on this as if it’s well received, we will increase the frequency of them. Finally, in today’s lesson, we will also cover money. Now this is always interesting because it gives us a chance to practice larger numbers. As you know, Japanese numbers get very high when you are talking about money. Now, today’s dialogue takes place at a checkout of a supermarket. As always we will give you the conversation one time at natural native speed, then one time slow and once with the English translation. Here we go.
DIALOGUE
(Hai,-ji no okyakusan dōzo. Hai, tamanegi ikko, ninjin ikko, jagaimo 3-ko, karēru ichi ichi-hako, bīru 2-pon. Hai, gōkei 1257-endesu. Hai, 2000-en kara. O tsuri wa 743-endegozaimasu.)
(Dōmo arigatōgozaimashita.)
(Mōichido, onegaishimasu. Yukkuri, onegaishimasu.)
(Hai,-ji no okyakusan dōzo. Hai, tamanegi ikko, ninjin ikko, jagaimo 3-ko, karēru ichi ichi-hako, bīru 2-pon. Hai, gōkei 1257-endesu. Hai, 2000-en kara. O tsuri wa 743-endegozaimasu.)
(Dōmo arigatōgozaimashita.)
Peter: This time Natsuko-san and Yoshi-san will give you the Japanese and I will give you the English. Here we go.
(Hai,-ji no okyakusan dōzo.)
Peter: Yes, next customer.
(Hai, tamanegi ikko,)
Peter: Yes, one onion,
(Ninjin ikko,)
Peter: one carrot,
(Jagaimo 3-ko,)
Peter: three potatoes,
(Karēru ichi ichi-hako,)
Peter: one box of curry roux,
(Bīru 2-pon.)
Peter: two beers.
(Hai, gōkei 1257-endesu.)
Peter: The total is 1257 yen.
(Hai, 2000-en kara. O tsuri wa 743-endegozaimasu.)
Peter: Yes, from 2000 yen. Your change is 743 yen.
(Yoshi: Dōmo arigatōgozaimashita.)
Peter: Thank you.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: So Natsuko-san, what are we making tonight?
Natsuko: Curry.
Peter: Oh it’s going to be a good night. (Natsukosan, karē ga suki desu ka?)
(Hai, daisukidesu.)
(Yoshi-san wa?)
(Un. Karē o kirainahito wa mezurashīdesu yo ne.)
(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: English please, what did you say?
Yoshi: I think it’s rare to find someone who doesn’t like curry.
Peter: I would have to agree. Now as we stated over and over, Japanese curry is quite different than Indian curry and has lots of different flavors. It’s very, very good and this lesson is basically introducing the key ingredients to making curry and a beverage that goes along with curry. So a couple of really important points in this lesson. Number one, introducing food items. Two, introducing some different counters and finally, three, numbers. We want to get you a lot of practice with numbers.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: Okay so what we are going to do here is introduce you to the key vocabulary. Then after we do this, we are going to go through the conversation quickly and break it down and show you some of the finer points. With that said, the first word.
Peter: Onion.
Peter: Carrot.
Peter: Potato.

Lesson focus

Peter: Now let’s stop right here. What do we have in the dialogue? Natsuko-san, can you run it down real quick?
(Tamanegi ikko, ninjin ikko, jagaimo san-ko.)
Peter: What are we using to count these vegetables?
Natsuko: 個 (ko) But sometimes 本 (hon) for にんじん。 (ninjin.)
Peter: Great point Natsuko. You can use both 個 (ko) or 本 (hon). The counter for long centrical things. Now what we want to stress about 個 (ko) is that its not specifically for vegetables.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And you can also use it for most standalone fruits. Now what I mean by standalone fruits is not really standalone but you know..
Natsuko: Yes, fruits.
Peter: Apple.
Natsuko: No, no, no, no, no sorry.
Peter: Apples, oranges and you can even get away using this counter as kind of like a general counter.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So if you go to a shop and you don’t know the exact counter for what you want, you can just add
Natsuko: 個 (ko)
Peter: Let’s just run through 1 to 10 really quick with this counter.
Natsuko: 一個 (ikko)
Yoshi: 二個 (ni-ko)
Natsuko: 三個 (san-ko)
Yoshi: 四個 (shi-ko)
Natsuko: 五個 (go-ko)
Yoshi: 六個 (roku-ko)
Natsuko: 七個 (nana-ko)
Yoshi: 八個 (hachi-ko)
Natsuko: 九個 (kyū-ko)
Yoshi: 十個 (jū-ko)
Peter: A nice thing about this counter is the pronunciation doesn’t change. You will find with Japanese counters that the pronunciation changes sometimes to mesh better with the number preceding it. For example, in the case of にんじん (ninjin), if we were to use the counter 本 (hon), it would be Euchisan.
(Ippon, nihon, Mitsumoto, yotsumoto, go-pon.)
Peter: The counter 本 (hon) changes specifically for the numbers 1 and 3. Yoshi-san one more time.
Peter: One thing and three things. Again counting long centrical things. Then we had after that.
Peter: And this is curry roux and I am sure that I butchered that. (sumimasen deshita.) Now for those interested in the actual definition, well that’s not so pleasant. Roux is defined as the mixture of fat and flower heated and used as a basis for sauces. Now I suppose when the Japanese took this because this is like a Bullying Cube right Euchisan?
Yoshi: Uhoo…
Peter: It’s not the melted part. It’s the hard solidified Bullying.
Yoshi: It almost looks like a chocolate bar.
Peter: Yeah. Yeah you don’t want to bite into that though. Really salty. So what we are going to do is we are going to stick with Bullying and what counter do we have for this?
Natsuko: 一箱 (hitohako)
Peter: Which is one box. The word for box being?
Natsuko: 箱 (hako)
Peter: This comes in a box. So we count it with this counter. How do we say give us five boxes?
Natsuko: 一箱 (hitohako)
Yoshi: 二箱 (futahako)
Natsuko: 三箱 (san hako)
Yoshi: 四箱 (shi hako)
Natsuko: 五箱 (go hako)
Peter: Now there is something very interesting. Can you give us 1 to 3 one more time?
Natsuko: 一箱 (hitohako)
Yoshi: 二箱 (futahako)
Natsuko: 三箱 (san hako)
Peter: Now this uses the Japanese counting system. Yes, in Japanese, there are two types of counting systems. One with Chinese origins and one with Japanese.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: The first part of that rather than 一 (ichi)、二 (ni)、三 (san). This is a very interesting point of counting boxes. So just pay attention to this and then finally we have.
Natsuko: ビール (bīru)
Peter: Notice the long vowel in there.
(Bīru, bīru.)
Peter: As opposed to ビール (bīru) which is a building. Now the counter for this is
Natsuko: 本 (hon)
M: Now as we said before, if you go to a drinking establishment and you would like to order something in a bottle but you can’t remember the counter for bottles which of course is 本 (hon), you can probably get away with 個 (ko).
Natsuko: Yes it works.
Peter: It works. So just kind of keep this in mind but for those of you who want the correct counting system, we are going to go with this.
Yoshi: 一本 (ippon)
Natsuko: 二本 (nihon)
Yoshi: 三本 (mitsumoto)
Natsuko: 四本 (yotsumoto)
Yoshi: 五本 (gohon)
Natsuko: 六本 (roku-pon)
Yoshi: 七本 (shichihon)
Natsuko: 八本 (hachi-pon)
Yoshi: 九本 (kyū-pon)
Natsuko: 十本 (tomoto)
Peter: Now this is for beers in a bottle.
Natsuko: Or a can.
Peter: Good point. Now if you want a draft beer, it’s a bit different.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: You could see how many counters there are but we will give you this real quick.
Natsuko: 杯 (hai)
Peter: Is the counter for cups.
Natsuko: 一杯 (ippai)
Yoshi: 二杯 (ni-pai)
Natsuko: 三杯 (san-pai)
Yoshi: 四杯 (shihai)
Natsuko: 五杯 (go-pai)
Peter: Okay we will stop.
Natsuko: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah we will get drunk.
Peter: Yeah that’s all you need to know. We don’t want to teach you how to get any more. So again, inside the PDF, we are going to have a nice write up about counters and again, the goal here is to sprinkle these in and get your ears accustomed to it. You know, get you switching in and out between the various counters. It just occurred to me that we gave the listeners up to 10 counting bottles which runs kind of contradictory to the five glass theory or the five cup theory. Well anyway, now that we covered this, let’s just run through that dialogue one more time. Again it’s the cashier and the customer at the supermarket. (Natsukosan, onegaishimasu.)
(Hai,-ji no okyakusan dōzo.)
Peter: We start off with
Natsuko: はい (hai)
Peter: Yes followed by.
Natsuko: 次のお客さん (tsugi no okyakusan)
Peter: First word in there is.
Natsuko: 次 (tsugi)
Peter: Next followed by.
Natsuko: の (no)
Peter: Possessive. So if you want to think about it this way, next.
Peter: Customer. Next customer and we just drop that possessive s. Next customer
Natsuko: どうぞ (dōzo)
Peter: Please, straightforward. Next customer please. Yes, next customer please.
(Hai, tamanegi ikko.)
Peter: And we just went over everything in here.
(Tamanegi ikko, ninjin ikko, jagaimo 3-ko, karēru ichi ichi-hako, bīru 2-pon.)
Peter: Okay here comes the money part.
(Hai, gōkei 1257-endesu. Gōkei)
Peter: This means.
Natsuko: Total.
Peter: Total. One more time please.
Natsuko: 合計 (gōkei)
Peter: Break it down.
(Go u kei.)
Peter: Too long vowels in there.
Natsuko: 合計 (gōkei)
Peter: Total.
Natsuko: 1257円 (1257-en)
Peter: ¥1257 followed by
Natsuko: です (desu)
Peter: And then we have the polite form of the copula です (desu). So yes, total, ¥1257. To make this into proper English or at least as proper as I can, the total is ¥1257.
(Hai, ni sen-en kara.)
Peter: ‘Yes ¥2000 from’ is the literal translation. One more time, Natsuko-san.
(Hai, ni sen-en kara.)
Peter: ¥2000 from. Again just take that from and bring it to the front. From ¥2000. Same as English. Just the order is a bit different.
(O tsuri wa 743-en de gozaimasu.)
Peter: First word in here.
Natsuko: おつり (o tsuri)
Peter: Change.
Natsuko: は (wa)
Peter: Topic marking particle.
Natsuko: 743円 (743-en)
Peter: ¥743
(De gozaimasu.)
M: And this is an extremely polite form of the copula that can often be heard when one assumes the role of customer and then finally we have Yoshi-san.
(Dōmo arigatō gozaimashita.)
Peter: Thank you and that’s it. Your shopping is now done.
Natsuko: Yes.

Outro

Peter: Now again in season 2, it’s geared to cover lots of things we covered in the first one but really reinforce them. That’s why there will be different numbers. In the previous season, we gave you the numbers. This I say 400, this I say 500 but we never gave you at natural speed hearing various numbers. So this is what season 2 is geared for.
(Ja, mata ashita ne.)
Yoshi: またね。 (Mata ne.)
