INTRODUCTION
Chigusa: おはよう、ブラジリア。ちぐさです。(Ohayō, Burajiria. Chigusa desu.)
Jun: おはよう、ブラジリア。ジュンです。(Ohayō, Burajiria. Jun desu.)
Peter: Peter here. Beginner lesson #110. All right, Chigusa-san, Jun-san, have you seen all the videos we’ve been getting?
Chigusa: Yes.
Peter: Thank you everybody out there who has submitted one. I mean they are starting to pour in and they are good.
Chigusa: They are really good.
Peter: They run the whole gamut of emotions, scary, funny…
Chigusa: Right.
Peter: Amazing, great but with that said, every single one of them we loved.
Chigusa: Yeah, they all look so time consuming.
Peter: We want to thank you so much…
Chigusa: Thank you so much..
Peter: For putting the time in. Chigusa-san, let’s give everyone a big thank you.
Chigusa: どうもありがとうございます!(Dōmo arigatō gozaimasu!)
Peter: You really make our days. Every time we come in, ah I am going to get caught up here talking about the videos but I just want to say every time we come in, we get a new video. It is just amazing. We go through it, everyone gathers around. Really amazing work that everybody out there has been doing. With that said, two more days guys, two more days to get your videos in. Now we are really excited about the next episode of I love coming up. So we need your help. Two more days, get them in. I have noticed though that a lot of girls asked about submitting a video for Yoshi but so far nothing…
Chigusa: Oh!
Peter: So we’d like to see something from you girls out there. Okay, with that said, we are talking about conjunctions today. Another good conjunction talking about sequence. Before one does something, doing something else. As always, please listen to the conversation. We are going to go through it slowly and then once with the translation. All right, here we go.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: So Jun-san, let’s ask Chigusa-san what she thinks about her husband in today’s dialogue.
Jun: 旦那さんについて、どう思いましたか。(Danna-san ni tsuite, dō omoimashita ka.)
Chigusa: ひどいと思いました。(Hidoi to omoimashita.)
Peter: Translation, please.
Chigusa: I thought he was horrible.
Peter: Well doesn’t it depend more on whose mother it was?
Chigusa: Yes, quite so but in either case, like forgetting the grammar is so horrible.
Peter: Honest mistake. Come on, it happens.
Chigusa: No, it shouldn’t happen.
Peter: Yes, it shouldn’t happen. Jun-san, what did you think about the husband’s behavior in the dialogue?
Jun: うーん、悪くはないと思いますよ。(Ūn, waruku wa nai to omoimasu yo.)
Peter: Not too bad.
Chigusa: How come? Don’t you like your grandma?
Peter: Not too convincing there, Jun-san.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, on to today’s vocabulary. First word. ちぐささん、お願いします。(Chigusa-san, onegai shimasu.)
Chigusa: 最後 (saigo)
Peter: Last, final.
Chigusa: (slow)さいご (saigo) (natural speed) 最後 (saigo)
Peter: Can you give us an example?
Chigusa: 最後の言葉 (saigo no kotoba)
Peter: Last word and I believe this is also the name of the movie, Dear Beloved. Next we have
Chigusa: 最後のチャンス (saigo no chansu)
Peter: Last chance and if you noticed about these two examples, what preposition is in between last and the noun.
Chigusa: の (no)
Peter: So the pattern is
Chigusa: 最後の (saigo no )
Peter: Something, something and you’d place the noun there. Now if we want to use it as an adverb
Chigusa: 最後に (saigo ni)
Peter: As in
Chigusa: 最後に生き残る。(Saigo ni ikinokoru.)
Peter: The last to remain alive. Lovely example, Chigusa-san. All right, let’s move on to Jun-san for the next one. ジュンさん、お願いします。(Jun-san, onegai shimasu.)
Jun: 確認 (kakunin)
Peter: Confirmation.
Jun: (slow)かくにん (kakunin) (natural speed) 確認 (kakunin)
Peter: Now to make this into a verb, we add
Jun: する (suru)
Peter: And this would mean to confirm. Can you give us an example?
Jun: ちぐささん、明日の予約を確認できますか。(Chigusa-san, ashita no yoyaku o kakunin dekimasu ka.)
Chigusa: はい、できます。(Hai, dekimasu.)
Peter: One more time, Jun-san?
Jun: ちぐささん、明日の予約を確認できますか。(Chigusa-san, ashita no yoyaku o kakunin dekimasu ka.)
Peter: Ms. Chigusa, can you confirm tomorrow’s reservation?
Chigusa: はい、できます。(Hai, dekimasu.)
Peter: Yes, I can. Also we have
Jun: 確認済 (kakuninzumi)
Peter: Chigusa-san, can you translate this?
Chigusa: Already confirmed.
Peter: Finally we have an expression that you may hear if you are a customer. This expression is
Jun: ご確認ください。(Go-kakunin kudasai.)
Peter: Please confirm. So Chigusa-san, what situations would this be used in?
Chigusa: こちらが領収書です。ご確認ください。(Kochira ga ryōshūsho desu. Go-kakunin kudasai.)
Peter: Here is your receipt. Please confirm it or please confirm the contents. One more time, nice and slow please.
Chigusa: こちらが領収書です。ご確認ください。(Kochira ga ryōshūsho desu. Go-kakunin kudasai.)
Peter: Next we have
Chigusa: 戸締り (tojimari)
Peter: Locking up.
Chigusa: (slow)とじまり (tojimari) (natural speed) 戸締り (tojimari)
Peter: Chigusa-san, can you give us an example?
Chigusa: 家の戸締りを忘れました。(Ie no tojimari o wasuremashita.)
Peter: I forgot to lock up the house. This can be used in the case of just houses
Chigusa: Or buildings.
Peter: What about apartments?
Chigusa: Sure.
Peter: Okay, so the whole thing together, just not a door or window, but everything.
Chigusa: Right.
Peter: How do we say lock the door?
Chigusa: ドアの鍵をかける (doa no kagi o kakeru)
Peter: One more time, slowly please.
Chigusa: ドアの鍵をかける (doa no kagi o kakeru)
Peter: Okay, how about a car?
Chigusa: 車の鍵をかける (kuruma no kagi o kakeru)
Peter: And the noun plus the possessive comes before it. How about in the case of window?
Chigusa: 窓の鍵をかける (mado no kagi o kakeru)
Peter: So things that get locked.
Chigusa: 鍵をかける (kagi o kakeru)
Peter: Next we have
Jun: 嫌われ者 (kirawaremono)
Peter: Hated person.
Jun: (slow)きらわれもの (kirawaremono) (natural speed) 嫌われ者 (kirawaremono)
Peter: Jun-san. Can you give us an example sentence?
Jun: 彼は仲間内では嫌われ者です。(Kare wa nakamauchi de wa kirawaremono desu.)
Peter: He is the hated person inside our group. Nice example, Jun-san. One more.
Jun: 嫌われ者は性格の悪い人が多いです。(Kirawaremono wa seikaku no warui hito ga ōi desu.)
Peter: Many hated people have bad personalities. And finally in today’s short vocab, we have.
Chigusa: わざと (wazato)
Peter: On purpose.
Chigusa: (slow)わざと (wazato) (natural speed) わざと (wazato)
Peter: Can you give us an example?
Jun: ちぐささん、今日、お金どれくらい持っていますか。(Chigusa-san, kyō, o-kane dore kurai motte imasu ka.)
Chigusa: 持っていません。(Motte imasen.)
Jun: え?なんでですか。(E? nande desu ka.)
Chigusa: 使いたくないから、わざと持ってきませんでした。(Tsukaitakunai kara, wazato motte kimasen deshita.)
Jun: なるほど。(Naruhodo.)
Peter: One more time.
Jun: ちぐささん、今日、お金はどれくらい持っていますか。(Chigusa-san, kyō, o-kane wa dore kurai motte imasu ka.)
Peter: Chigusa, today how much money do you have with you?
Chigusa: 持っていません。(Motte imasen.)
Peter: I don’t have any.
Jun: え?なんでですか。(E? Nande desu ka.)
Peter: Hah why?
Chigusa: 使いたくないから、わざと持ってきませんでした。(Tsukaitakunai kara, wazato motte kimasen deshita.)
Peter: I didn’t bring any on purpose because I don’t want to use any. And finally we have
Chigusa: 夏休み (natsuyasumi)
Peter: Summer vacation.
Chigusa: (slow)なつやすみ (natsuyasumi) (natural speed) 夏休み (natsuyasumi)
Peter: We are talking about it this week because a lot of people have summer vacation because this coincides with
Chigusa: お盆 (o-bon)
Peter: And actually sometimes it’s called
Chigusa: お盆休み (o-bon’yasumi)
Peter: And yes most of our staff is on summer vacation.

Lesson focus

Peter: All right, with that said, on to today’s grammar point. Today’s grammar point is conjunction
Chigusa: 前に (mae ni)
Peter: Which can mean both before and in front of? Today we are looking at the first meaning, before. Chigusa-san, what do we have in today’s conversation?
Chigusa: 出発する前に (shuppatsu suru mae ni)
Peter: Before departing. Now the way we construct this is we take the plain non-past of verbs and we attach
Chigusa: 前に (mae ni)
Peter: For example, before meeting.
Chigusa: 会う前に (au mae ni)
Peter: Before eating
Chigusa: 食べる前に (taberu mae ni)
Peter: Here we can see the plain non-past plus
Chigusa: 前に (mae ni)
Peter: And this is used as a conjunction between the subordinate clause and the main clause. Something the subject does precedes something else. Chigusa-san, can you give us an example?
Chigusa: 海外に行く前に、私はパスポートを取りに行きます。(Kaigai ni iku mae ni, watashi wa pasupōto o tori ni ikimasu.)
Peter: Before going abroad, I will go to get my passport. How about another example, Jun-san?
Jun: 食べる前に、私は手を洗います。(Taberu mae ni, watashi wa te o araimasu.)
Peter: I wash my hands before I eat. Another way to form this construction is with nouns. Noun plus the possessive
Chigusa: の (no)
Peter: Plus
Chigusa: 前に (mae ni)
Peter: For example, how do we say “before class”?
Chigusa: 授業の前に (jugyō no mae ni)
Peter: The word for class
Chigusa: 授業 (jugyō)
Peter: Plus
Chigusa: の前に (no mae ni)

Outro

Peter: There it is. That’s going to do for today.
