POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: So Takase, what do you think of this guy, Yoshi?
Takase: He is cute.
Peter: What do you think about this guy, Yoshi, かわいい服 (kawaii fuku)?
Takase: Yes, that’s the point, right Yoshi?
Yoshi: Umm yes…
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Ah Takase. Again we ran a bit late. So let’s get right into the vocabulary. First word.
Yoshi: いっぱい (ippai)
Peter: It can mean a lot and it can also mean full.
Yoshi: (slow)いっぱい (ippai) (natural speed)いっぱい (ippai)
Peter: And we covered this word before. We just wanted to bring it up again and give you a little reminder. Again what’s the example we had for full?
Yoshi: お腹いっぱい (onaka ippai)
Peter: And this is.
Yoshi: I am full.
Peter: And we gave you the informal version. What’s the formal version?
Yoshi: お腹がいっぱいです。(Onaka ga ippai desu.)
Peter: I am full. And in the dialogue, we used.
Yoshi: 人がいっぱいいますね。(Hito ga ippai imasu ne.)
Peter: Which means
Yoshi: There are lots of people.
Peter: Next we have.
Takase: ぴったり (pittari)
Peter: Just
Takase: (slow)ぴったり (pittari) (natural speed)ぴったり (pittari)
Peter: Okay. In the dialogue, we said
Takase: ぴったりです (pittari desu)
Peter: And
Takase: ぴったり2時半です (pittari ni-ji han desu)
Peter: Right at 2:30. So this expression is used with time a lot. Also, is there another way we can use this, Takase?
Takase: Yes umm, when your clothes just fit.
Peter: Yeah, so I have this nice leather jacket, I put it on, fits just right. I can say
Takase: ぴったりです (pittari desu)
Peter: Okay. Perfect fit.
Takase: ぴったりです (pittari desu)
Peter: Just the right size and there is one more point we’d like to make about.
Yoshi: いっぱい (ippai)
Peter: And
Takase: ぴったり (pittari)
Peter: In both these words, there is a small つ (tsu), a 小さいつ (chiisai tsu) or ちっちゃいつ (chitchai tsu) and this means that we have to – we actually have to pause or hold for a little bit over this つ (tsu), this ちっちゃいつ (chitchai tsu). So can you give us the slow pronunciation one more time, Yoshi.
Yoshi: (slow)いっぱい (ippai)
Peter: There is a short hold in there and Takase, can you give us?
Takase: (slow)ぴったり (pittari)
Peter: So again this will come in time and this is one of the finer pronunciation points that is quite difficult to pick up in Japanese. I myself have a tough time with this. Right, Takase?
Takase: I don’t know.
Peter: Okay, well how is my pronunciation, ぴったり (pittari)?
Takase: It’s okay.
Peter: Takase, your Japanese remember yesterday, you are supposed to say, お上手ですね。(O-jōzu desu ne.)
Takase: お上手ですよ。(O-jōzu desu yo.)
Peter: Ah thank you, Takase. Now that’s encouraging. I feel good.
Takase: 頑張ってください。(Ganbatte kudasai.)
Peter: Okay. Next up we have
Yoshi: 半 (han)
Peter: Half.
Yoshi: (slow)はん (han) (natural speed)半 (han)
Peter: When used with time, it is half past as in the example we had
Yoshi: 今2時半です。(Ima ni-ji han desu.)
Peter: It’s 2:30 now. Now used in other contexts, it means half. You can also find this used with and there is also another popular construction and this is
Yoshi: 半分 (hanbun)
Peter: Which means
Yoshi: A half of something.
Peter: Yeah, so when we go to eat, I always say to Takase 半分お願いします (hanbun onegai shimasu) and Takase always says
Takase: 全部お願いします (zenbu onegai shimasu)
Peter: Yes, half is
Yoshi: 半分 (hanbun)
Peter: And all is
Takase: 全部 (zenbu)
Peter: Break it down.
Takase: (slow)ぜんぶ (zenbu) (natural speed)全部 (zenbu)
Peter: Okay, we got half. We got it all. How about one bite, what’s one bite?
Yoshi: 一口 (hitokuchi)
Peter: Break it down.
Yoshi: (slow)ひとくち (hitokuchi) (natural speed) 一口 (hitokuchi)
Peter: Okay. So if someone says to you
Yoshi: 一口どうぞ。(Hitokuchi dōzo.)
Peter: Take a bite. You can say
Takase: 全部お願いします。(Zenbu onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Yeah. All of it please and that’s sure to draw a very interesting response and remember, that’s Takase Japanese.
Takase: Nagasaki Japanese.
Peter: Okay, next we have
Takase: とりあえず (toriaezu)
Peter: To start with.
Takase: (slow)とりあえず (toriaezu) (natural speed)とりあえず (toriaezu)
Peter: And this is a very, very popular expression when you go to order. I think this is a set phrase.
Yoshi: とりあえずビール。(Toriaezu bīru.)
Peter: To start with a beer. This is quite popular when you go to Izakaya. What is in Izakaya anyway?
Yoshi: Izakaya is a Japanese drinking place.
Peter: And when you go to these places, you always start with
Yoshi: とりあえずビール。(Toriaezu bīru.)
Peter: Yep. I don’t think they will take your order if you don’t say that. Right, Takase?
Takase: No, you can.
Peter: Okay. My jokes don’t work with Takase. One more time, that expression, please.
Takase: とりあえず (toriaezu)
Peter: Okay. Next.
Yoshi: 109 (Ichimarukyū)
Peter: 109
Yoshi: (slow)いちまるきゅう (Ichimarukyū) (natural speed)109 (Ichimarukyū)
Peter: And if you’d like more information, again check back to our JCC on Shibuya. Next we have
Takase: 出発進行 (shuppatsu shinkō)
Peter: Advance, move forward.
Takase: (slow)しゅっぱつしんこう (shuppatsu shinkō) (natural speed)出発進行 (shuppatsu shinkō)
Peter: Okay, and give it to us one more time, Yoshi?
Yoshi: 出発進行!(Shuppatsu shinkō!)
Peter: Okay, and when can we use this?
Yoshi: When you are about to set out for something.
Peter: Okay. So next time when you went to your Japanese friends, give this expression a try. What kind of reaction do we expect?
Yoshi: Laughing.

Outro

Peter: Okay. So that’s going to wrap it up for today. Again thank you Yoshi and thank you Takase.
Takase: どういたしまして。また明日。(Dōitashimashite. Mata ashita.)
Peter: See you tomorrow.
