In this lesson, you’ll learn how to give your e-mail address in Japanese.

For example, "My e-mail address is megumi@innolang.com." is

わたしのメールアドレスは megumi@innolang.com (エム・イー・ジー・ユー・エム・アイ　アットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム) です。(Watashi no mēru adoresu wa emu ī jī ū emu ai atto māku inorangu dotto komu desu.)

Megumi Sasaki is at city hall registering her address.

A civil servant is asking for her email address.

Before you hear their conversation, let’s preview some of its key components.

メールアドレス

"E-mail address"

メールアドレス (enunciated)

Once more with the English translation.

ささきさん、メールアドレスをおねがいします。(Sasaki-san, mēru adoresu o onegai shimasu.)

"Ms. Sasaki, your e-mail address, please."

"My e-mail address is megumi@innolang.com."

Let's break down the conversation.

Do you remember how the civil servant says,

"Ms. Sasaki, your e-mail address, please."

ささきさん、メールアドレスをおねがいします。(Sasaki-san, mēru adoresu o onegai shimasu.)

First is ささきさん (Sasaki-san), Ms. Sasaki, ささきさん.

This starts with Megumi’s family name ささき, “Sasaki.” ささき.ささき.

After this is さん, a polite suffix added to a person’s name. さ-ん. さん.

This suffix can be used with any gender, and translates as "Ms." in Megumi's case.

Together it’s ささきさん, "Ms. Sasaki," ささきさん.

Next is メールアドレス (mēru adoresu), "e-mail address." メ-ー-ル-ア-ド-レ-ス. メールアドレス

This word has two parts.

First is メール (mēru) a commonly used abbreviation for "e-mail," メール. メール.

Next is アドレス (adoresu), "address." ア-ド-レ-ス. アドレス

Together, メールアドレス, "e-mail address." メールアドレス.

Remember this because you’ll see it again in Megumi’s response.

Next is を(o), the object-marking particle. を.

Think of を as a marker for the thing receiving the action. In this sentence, it marks メールアドレス, "e-mail address," as the object being requested.

Last is おねがいします (onegai shimasu), "please." おねがいします. おねがいします

All together, it’s ささきさん、メールアドレスをおねがいします。This literally means, "Ms. Sasaki, e-mail address, please," but translates as, "Ms. Sasaki, your e-mail address, please."

ささきさん、メールアドレスをおねがいします。(Sasaki-san, mēru adoresu o onegai shimasu.)

Note, the "your" in "your e-mail address" is understood from the context of the two-person conversation. Omitting understood information is common in Japanese.

Remember this request. You’ll hear it again later.

Let’s take a closer look at the response.

Do you remember how Megumi says, "My e-mail address is megumi@innolang.com"

First is わたしの (watashi no), "my." わたしの.

This starts with わたし, "I." わ-た-し. わたし.

After this is の (no), the possessive-marking particle. の. の.

Together, it’s わたしの "my," わたしの.

Next, do you remember how to say “e-mail address?”

メールアドレス (mēru adoresu), "e-mail address." メールアドレス.

Together, わたしのメールアドレス, "my e-mail address." わたしのメールアドレス.

Next is は (wa), the topic-marking particle. は.

It marks "my e-mail address" as the topic of the sentence. Think of it like "as for" in the expression "as for my e-mail address."

Next is Megumi’s e-mail address:

megumi@innolang.com (エム・イー・ジー・ユー・エム・アイ　アットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム),

First is Megumi’s name, "m-e-g-u-m-i (エム・イー・ジー・ユー・エム・アイ)."

Next is the at mark. In Japanese, it’s pronounced, アットマーク. アットマーク.

Note: アットマーク can also be shortened to アット, “at,” a way to abbreviate atmark. ア-ッ-ト. アット

Next is the domain name in Japanese: イノラング

And last is ドット　コム, "dot com." ド-ッ-ト-コ-ム. ドット　コム.

All together, Megumi’s e-mail address is megumi@innolang.com (エム・イー・ジー・ユー・エム・アイ　アットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム) .

Last is, です, in this case, it’s like the "is" in "it is." です.

All together, it’s わたしのメールアドレスは megumi@innolang.comです. This literally means, "As for my e-mail address, megumi@innolang.com is," but translates as, "My e-mail address is megumi@innolang.com."

The pattern is

わたしのメールアドレスは E-MAIL ADDRESS です。

"My e-mail address is E-MAIL ADDRESS."

わたしのメールアドレスは E-MAIL ADDRESS です。

To use this pattern, simply replace {E-MAIL ADDRESS} placeholder with your e-mail address.

Imagine your e-mail address is maki@innolang.com. エ-ム・エ-ー・ケ-ー・ア-イア-ッ-ト-マ-ー-ク　イ-ノ-ラ-ン-グ　ド-ッ-ト　コ-ム(slow version - breakdown by syllable).

エム・エー・ケー・アイアットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム.

Say, "My e-mail address is maki@innolang.com.

わたしのメールアドレスは maki@innolang.com (エム・エー・ケー・アイ　アットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム)です。(Watashi no mēru adoresu wa emu ē kē ai atto māku inorangu dotto komu desu.)

When giving your e-mail address in Japan, if the domain name is well known, you don’t need to spell it out.

For example:

gmail

ジーメール.

However, outside of well-known domain names, it will usually be necessary to spell it out.

Again, the key pattern is

わたしのメールアドレスは E-MAIL ADDRESS です。

"My e-mail address is E-MAIL ADDRESS."

わたしのメールアドレスは E-MAIL ADDRESS です。

Let’s look at some more examples of people giving their e-mail address.

Listen and repeat, or speak along with the native speakers.

Did you notice how わたしの was omitted?

メールアドレスは kk@innolang.com (ケー・ケー　アットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム)です。(Mēru adoresu wa kē kē atto māku inorangu dotto komu desu.)

"E-mail address is kk@innolang.com."

The speaker omitted わたしの meaning "my."

When giving your e-mail address in response to a request, you can omit the phrase, わたしの "my," because the context is clear in a two-person conversation.

The pattern is:

メールアドレスは E-MAIL ADDRESS です。

"E-mail address is E-MAIL ADDRESS."

This can be shortened even further.

kk@innolang.com (ケー・ケーアットマーク　イノラング　ドット　コム)です。

When responding to a request, you can omit the whole phrase, わたしのメールアドレスは meaning "as for my e-mail address," because it’s clear from the context the speaker is giving their e-mail address. This is the shortest answer to a request to give your e-mail address.

E-MAIL ADDRESS です。

"It’s E-MAIL ADDRESS"

You should be aware of these shortcuts, but for this lesson, we’ll use the full sentence pattern.
