Popup video ad when visting the (index.php) homepage

A number of users on the forum have posted in regards to the popup window ad that now appears when the browser is directed to http://www.japanesepod101.com/index.php

So far the response has not been positive. Judging from the feedback received in the forums as well as personal experience - having used the site daily since the change, it doesn't seem like the popup is conducive to a positive end user experience.

I just wanted to bring the issue up for discussion both in regards to what other staff think about the popup and what response should be given if the issue becomes a "hot topic" again.

The popup should only display for users that are not logged in, or that do not have cookies enabled. There are a lot of visitors that come to the inside of the site then have no idea how to signup. The popup solves that.

If there is a problem with the popup displaying for users that are logged in, then we will need to log that as a bug. It would indeed be quite annoying (however, I have never had this problem so far in FireFox 2 / 3, or Safari, and we have also tested with IE 7).

I've also not had a problem with the popup once I've logged in. It is though quite annoying to see it all the time when I'm not.
