Hi Hrvoje san,

Wow... it's difficult for Japanese to pronounce your name.
Could you tell me how to pronounce your name by romaji?
It might be フルヴォイェ・モスタラクさん, but I'm not sure. sorry.

Hello! I have a very uncommon name... I am a girl named after my father, Wesley. My name is Weslynn. I can't find a Japanese word for Weslynn anywhere! People also call me Wes, though... So if you can't help me with my full name can you help me find "Wes?"

Also, thank you for doing such a great job on teaching Japanese! I am only 11, turning 12 next month, and I have already learned a some of a new language thanks to this website. I will surely tell my friends and family about JapanesePod101! :kokoro:

Do you pronounce it so it rhymes with "mess" or so it sounds like "Wez"? Western names are spelt phonetically, so the answer depends on how you pronounce it.

If you rhyme with "mess" your name in romaji will be u-e-su-ri-n, or u-e-su for short. If it's "Wez" you need zu instead of su, so it's u-e-zu-ri-n and u-e-zu. These would normally be written in katakana, and look like this:-

ウェスリン = Weslynn
ウェス = Wes
ウェズリン = Wezlynn
ウェズ = Wez

Hi again!
That's the problem! If I knew how to pronounce it in romaji, I would have somehow figured it out (I think the surname is correct!).

But I suppose I do have 2 clues for first name.

First clue would be that I'm from Croatia, and in Croatia everything is pronounced the same as in Japanese (a=a, i=i, e=e... unlike in English where it goes like a=ei, i=ai, e=i).

Second clue would be the fact that Croatia is translated in Japanese as Kuroachia (クロアチア); and in relevance with that, in Croatian, Croatia is written as "Hrvatska". My name is originally derived from the name of my country as well! You can see that the first 3 letters are the same as in my name, so maybe the start of my name in katakana should begin with kuro (クロ)? Or is that wrong thinking, since it looks like Kuroachia is a direct translation of "Croatia" and not "Hrvatska"?

Still, I do like how you interpreted it :)

Sorry for the late reply!

P.S. If it's not problem for being offtopic, I'd like to ask on your opinion of the name "Kirinatsu"(霧夏), how would it fare in Japan? Would it be seen as odd? And if it was written in kanji, which ones would be most probably used? I still have much to learn when it comes to combining and reading kanji with on'yomi reading.

edit: except for "j" which is pronounced as "y" like in "yakisoba". for "j" like in "kanji" we have a letter "đ".

Hi Hrvoje-san!

When you're trying to write a name in katakana you aim to write it as far as possible so that when a Japanese person reads the katakana, they will pronounce your name about as accurately as a Japanese speaker can. I suspect that クロアチア is a bit misleading because, as far as I can make out, while that's very close to how I say "Croatia* (I'm British English), it's not that close to how you say "Hrvatska".

I've been listening to a recording of a Croatian saying "Hrvoje" at http://www.forvo.com/word/hrvoje/. Assuming that the recording is a good guide and that I've listened to it properly, I think your name will be something like this:-

ヘルヲイエ he-ru-wo-i-e

The "r" sound in your name sounds quite strong, and Japanese just doesn't have a good approximation. I'm not sure whether a Japanese speaker will pronounce ヲ as "wo" or "o" (I'm hoping for "wo" but if I'm wrong, "o" is going to be the second choice anyway). And "i-e" is quite close to the "yeh" sound that I hear at the end.

What do you think?

Assuming it's pronounced the same was as Buzz Aldrin (the second man on the moon), it will be

オルドリン o-ru-do-ri-n
