Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! It’s not clear to you why, but you seem to have little difficulty reading the hiragana and kanji you see every day in Japan. However, listening to Japanese has proven to be quite a challenge. For some reason, listening to the Japanese language is more difficult than reading it. You notice that’s different for you than for your other friends who came to Japan with you. But now, you’ve got to get better at listening to your Japanese lessons. You’re scheduled to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in a few weeks, and you’ve learned that a part of the test is answering Japanese questions based solely on what you’ve heard. Your Japanese friends all tell you that you’ll do really well because you answer all their Japanese questions and participate in Japanese conversations with them just fine. But it’s just not the same as taking a listening test in Japanese. “What am I going to do about the test?” you complain to your friend in Japanese. “Don’t worry so much. You’ll do fine,” she answers in Japanese. “You understand me now, don’t you? And I’m speaking Japanese.” Frustrated, you reply in Japanese, “Yes, but it’s so much different talking to you than taking a test.” “How is it different?” she questions. And you can’t seem to say how it’s different…you just know it is. Maybe you will do well, after all, you have practiced Japanese for what seems like forever!
Learning Japanese with JapanesePod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Japanese! This Japanese Language Proficiency Test Preparation lesson focuses on a section of the test where you must listen and give the right answer. You won’t be able to read either the question or the possible answers; they’re not printed in the test book. You must do it all by listening to Japanese speakers. If you’re going to take the JLPT, this preparation lesson will definitely help. Visit us at JapanesePod101.com where you will find many more, great Japanese lessons and learning materials. I’m not sure that I understand the format and time limit for the Listening section of the test. Your lesson notes say that there are 17 questions and the period is 25 minutes. But you presented two types of questions, those with pictures and those without pictures, just spoken dialogue.
Are there two listening sections of 17 questions, 25 minutes each. If there is only one section, what is the split between the two types of questions?

I have really enjoyed this series. Whilst I’m not sitting for the JLPT, I feel this has been an excellent review and has highlighted my strengths and weaknesses. Up until lesson 4, I was thinking “Hey, I can do this.” Lessons 5 and 6 on listening have made me realise it might be just as well that I have to wait another year!! I need to make the connection between my ear and brain work just a little faster. I seem to spend so much time trying to translate what I hear that the next sentence is half over before I know it! Then panic sets in once I realise that in a real test, I’d only get one shot at hearing it. I’m usually pretty good after about the 6th repeat in catching most of the dialogue!
Just one question …. are the dialogues and questions always in Polite Japanese in these tests, or is Casual Japanese sometimes thrown into the mix?

Thanks for this Last Minute Prep Course. The information about the test structure and content is not easy to find, so this review was very helpful and timely.
Thanks again.

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone! We’re glad to hear that you found this series helpful
To answer some questions:
Richさん,
There is one listening section with 17 questions total. I took a look at some past tests and saw that the questions with pictures and those without are split almost evenly - 8 of one type and 9 of the other.
Tessさん,
Yes, both polite and casual Japanese shows up on the JLPT, even at Level 4.

This prep course series proved to be extremely useful! I went through the entire 6 lessons as a revision and they definitely helped a lot when I sat for my JLPT this year. Really hope that there would also be similar prep course series for the other levels next year (especially now that they are changing to new test format). Thanks so much again!
