Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Hungry? Teaching or taking those morning classes will make you starving for lunch. What to eat that won’t make you too sleepy for your Japanese classes after lunch? How do you find the Japanese restaurants with the best food but the cheapest prices? You ask students of course. Notoriously low on money and high on appetite, students know both the language and the financials of food. If you’re interested in Japanese, you should also investigate Japanese foods. Sushi, sashimi, yakitori, tempura, even natto can all be found if you follow the trail of students with their noses in the air. Be prepared to brandish your chopsticks with gusto when you find those special places that really know Japanese food and keep prices reasonable.

Hi Miriam… so.. they write their messages in Japanese because know, how to write some kanji, with hiragana or katakana.. I understand hiragana and katakana and some kaji..but computer also have to have the program install .

Ok.. Cheers with your Japanese study.

Me too I am suffering with Kanji…

嫌いな日本食ありません. らめんが だいすき。たんたんめんが だいすき! らめ店の常連常連. (いつ も の)って います.

Allen says:

Mariam, there might be better programs but the Japanese word processing program I use is NJStar. You type in what you want using an English letter keyboard and it automatically translates it to kana. From there you can highlight words you want to transpose to kanji. Then you can copy and paste to other documents or locations. It’s a little time consuming but it works.

avatar
Jenny says:

@Mariam - Macintosh computers have everything built-in to type in Japanese or whatnot. With PCs you have to add it separately. Both have modes where you type the romaji of Japanese, but it displays hiragana on the screen. When you hit the space bar, it will automatically convert to the most common kanji, or hit it twice and it will bring up a list of kanji associated with that sound.

Romaji mode is good for non-Japanese keyboards. My Mac is from the states, but it works the same as the Macs for the Japanese market. Both can do romaji input mode, but the Japanese Macs also have the added feature of inputting everything in a kana mode.

Here are the links telling you how to set up Japanese input on both Macs and Windows:

@Allen - you’d benefit from reading these too.

avatar
Jenny says:

@Mariam, Allen - if you go to the technical support forum, you’ll find posts on how to set up your Mac or PC in which to type in Japanese.

Sorry I can’t post the links here, it won’t let me. :(

Steveさん、
緑茶好きじゃないんですね~ 他のお茶の種類はどうですか?抹茶は?

josephdjさん、
That’s true, natto is healthy! Maybe that’s a good reason to try and like it

Allenさん、
嫌いな日本食、ないんですか?!素晴らしい  私、何でも食べられるようになりたいです。。

Jason says:

刺身を食べられません。一度試した。思いで「マズ」って言っていました。(I really said “GROSS” in my mind, because I didn’t know about “mazu!”)

I liked this lesson a lot. Thanks!

コメントありがとうございます。Thank you for the comments!

私は納豆が大好きです。でも、それは小さい頃から食べていたからだと思います。皆さんの国には、そういう食べ物はないですか?
I LOVE natto, but I think that’s because I’ve been eating it since I was a child. Do you have that kind of food or dish in your country?

avatar
Allen says:

Ki nd of like brussel sprouts. You either like them or you hate them! There’s not much in between!

Now I’m in the mood for my favorite ramen. 週間に一回行く.常連です よ

Richard in Ishigaki says:

I loved the bit at the end where the listerner was promted to create their own sentence. I’ve been waiting for this feature for so long on JapanesePod101.com - I’d love to see more. Actually creating sentences yourself rather than just listening / repeating is key to language learning.

Please, lots more of this.

avatar
Bonnie says:

日本食がほとんど好きだが、ひじきはまずいだと思います。しかし、ふつうに嫌い食べ物のはうめぼしや納豆のような物が好きです。

avatar
Richard in Ishigaki says:

Hey, why did my comment about how much I like the lesson get removed? I’ll post it again - I thought that the bit at the end where you prompted listeners to create their own sentence was great as it’s a fundamental part of language learning.

avatar
Jessi says:

Richard in Ishigakiさん,
It wasn’t that your comment was removed, it’s that it got caught in the spam filter  Thank you for your feedback! We’ll try to work more of those types of exercises into the podcasts

Bonnieさん,
ひじき is the black kind of seaweed, right? I think I’ve had it before, but I don’t remember what it tasted like

avatar
Mayumi says:

Jason-san,
So, you can’t eat sushi, either?

Allen-san,
What kind of ramen do you like best? tonkotsu, miso, shio or shouyu??

Bonnie-san,
ひじき doesn’t look good… But I like onigiri with ひじき mixed.

avatar
Jessi says:

Richard in Ishigakiさん,
Also, this is quite off topic, but I finally recognize the name of the place you live having gone to Okinawa for the first time last month! We stayed in a hotel in Naha and visited nearby Tokashiki Island, but my friend and I were talking about visiting Ishigaki Island on our next trip (whenever that may be!) because it looked so nice  Your site is an awesome resource!

avatar
Steve says:

果物のお茶、あるいは中国のJasmine茶のほうが好きです :)

avatar
ジャビン says:

僕も!納豆が嫌いだ!

I didn’t know such food exists before I went to Nagoya in 2004. (I thought it’s all about ramen, shushi etc. )

I dislike 納豆after I tasted it in 2004, till now.

But Naomi-san,
I heard that there are curtain parts of Japan that produces Natto. I can’t remember which part, though. それで、なおみ先生は納豆が大好きわけじゃないんですか?

avatar
Richard in Ishigaki says:

Hi Jessi,

Thanks for checking out my website. I’ve lived on Ishigaki for about 10 months now and I absolutely love this island. If you ever visit Ishigaki give me a shout. I know some friendly bars and nice beaches. There are a few Japanesepod101 listerners on the island too (a japanesepod101.com meetup on Ishigaki island sounds like a great idea doesn’t it!).

avatar
Naomi says:

ジャビン-san
私の住んでいるところでは、納豆は作っていませんが、私の親が納豆が好きなので、よく食べていました。
The area I grew up doesn’t produces Natto. My parents likes Natto so I’ve been eating it since I was a kid.
I think Mito-city in Ibaraki prefecture is famous for Natto.

avatar
Yuki says:

Richard-san,
Wow you are living in Ishigaki?! That’s awesome!
I will go to Okinawa in November for my friend’s wedding….石垣島行ってみたい :hachimaki:

ジャビンさん
Naomi-san is living really really close to Mito, Ibaraki
I guess that’s why she loves natto.

avatar
Naomi says:

It seems like someone is making fun of IBARAKI.

Yuki,
FYI, I don’t live in Ibaraki. I live in Chiba. It takes about 2 hours to get to Mito.

avatar
Meengelay says:

わたしは Miso soup だけ食べれます。

avatar
kiki says:

mmm~ the food in the picture looks so good! What is it called? (If it’s in the lesson, I haven’t gotten to doing this lesson yet)

avatar
Mayumi says:

kiki-san,
It’s Natto! Have a try to eat it, and let us know how you like it! :nihon:

avatar
StrudelCuddy says:

嫌いな日本食はまだありませんです。生卵となっとは微妙そうけど一時で食べたいです。

avatar
Mayumi says:

StrudelCuddyさん、
がんばって、食べてみてください! :hachimaki:

avatar
jack says:

鹿児島県では生鶏を食べますよ!納豆はねばねばとかくさいだから、ちょっと大変けど、食べやすい!

鳥刺しを納豆とくらべられません。始めたとき、じつは吐きたかったんです。最近、私は鶏刺しの味に慣れて、時々自分で食べます。もし皮を脱いだら、刺身みたいに食べられます。

ああ!ごうや…spelling? 教えてる学校でみんなさんはごうやが大嫌そうだ。だれかごうやを食べたことがありますか?

avatar
Jessi says:

jackさん,
私はゴーヤーを食べたことありますけど、苦くてあまり好きじゃないです  苦いものが平気だったらぜひ食べてみてください

avatar
Hiroko says:

納豆大好き! :kokoro:

avatar
jack says:

Jessi先生、平気の意味をちょっと教えてください。

jack :dogeza:

avatar
Jessi says:

Jackさん,
If you say that something is 平気, it means that it is not a problem, so in this context it would be something like “If you have no problem eating spicy food…”

avatar
jack says:

got it! i was wondering, what happened to the intermediate feed? you haven’t added to it in about a year. I’m looking to challenge myself a bit further and was thinking of the intermediate level as a logical next step. Or, do you think I should look at the upper intermediate? I looked at a few lesson notes from the intermediate level and it doesn’t seem to have many more new vocab words for me than the lower intermediate does.

What do you think?
