Mina-san, what’s your local currency?
Saturday at 10:10 pm
I live in Scotland, so I use the pound (sterling).
The Lesson Notes here seem to be blank, although the Kanji close-up is fine.
Hopefully be fixed by the end of the day.
Saturday at 10:40 pm
My mistake the Lesson Notes aren’t blank, I had updated from Adobe Reader 8 to 9, and assumed the Japanese fonts would be OK. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Hello Everyone.
New PDFs are showing up (some of you already have them) and will require an update to your Adobe Reader if you are not already using the latest version (9).
You can download the latest version of Adobe Reader here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html
The latest Adobe Reader will automatically download any necessary fonts. Some of the benefits of these new PDFs are:
* Searching PDFs now work (it did not work in the old PDFs)
* COPY / PASTE now works - this is very useful to people studying and trying to take notes elsewhere
* The PDFs are now compatible with special accessibility software (ie. screen readers)
* There are bookmarks already in place for you to quick-click
**Mac users will need to use Adobe Reader 9 instead of Preview.

Hi Guys
I am a bit puzzled what to do. I have a Power Book and my software is supposedly up to date. 10.3.9. But I can not install Adobe 9.0. Therefore I can not read the new PDF’s. Am I doing something wrong?
Monday at 8:30 am
Naomi, this is a daft question but how come there is no picture of you in the about us section?
I have become obsessed with this blog, in a good way:???:
Monday at 9:31 am
I really liked the portion of the lessons where Eric and Naomi-Sensei were listing numbers in Japanese and English. Any chance of a review track or two dedicated to just numbers? (in a fashion similar to the premium vocabulary review) I find that I could use a lot more practice to understand or use numbers at a normal conversation pace.

Mike_in_Nano,
Can you install Adobe Reader 8? Version 8 will also support our PDFs.
Monday at 10:41 am
Hi Charles
At work on my PC no problem reading the PDF’s. At home no I can not see. I just checked using my PC the Adobe site listed above. For Mac Os 10.2X to 10.4X Version 7.1 in the most up to date.
I mustn’t be the only one.

Good lesson. I really wish the Kanji Close Up pdfs had the stroke order for the kanji
I’d also love if you would put up some resources for how to type Japanese on American keyboards, I have always been so confused on how to do that… Thanks again!
Tuesday at 3:03 am
I have downloaded Adobe Reader 9 and I still do not get the lessons on the pdf. I only get blank pages. Am I missing something I need to do after I have downloaded the update?
Tuesday at 3:23 am
Tachikawasan:
Adobe reader should prompt you to also download the Japanese fonts when you hit the blank page. If not, go to their web site to get them. That is what is wrong.
Also a general comment. If the Japanese want yen to be pronounced en, it would be nice not to spell it as “Yen” on all official Japanese bills!! Desho?

Steffie san> I love finding gohyakuen dama in my pocket too! Have you heard of Gohyakuen dama chokin (Piggy bank just for saving 500yen coins, once it’s filled you’d have saved 10man en or sometimes 20man en depending on the size of the piggy bank)?
Avlor san> What is your favorite coin in Japanese yen? My favorite is Gohyaku en!

Ah, d*** - so now Japanesepod101.com has joined suit in using the new Adobe 9 format. I heard the same rational from KoreanClass101 — the added ability to cut/paste etc.
All I can do is say here what I said there (to no avail) — Adobe 9 has known printer issues, particularly for mac users. I no longer can print my lesson notes for on the go study. I understand that my problem alone will not cause you to rethink this maddening need to upgrade your encryption method — even though the old worked perfectly fine — but as a premium subscriber for over three years now . . you guys have left me out.
Tuesday at 2:53 pm
I would like to reiterate what Sean said. At least as a computer dummy I believe this is correct. On my Apple PowerBook I am using OS 10.3X and CAN NOT upgrade to Adobe Reader 8 or Adobe Reader 9. It is only because I have a PC in the office I can see the PDF’s.
If I am incorrect about loading Adobe 9 or 8 (I tried) and someone knows how on this version of OS please share.
Tuesday at 3:13 pm
Mike in Nano,
Can you install any version of Adobe Reader?
You should be able to upgrade and install the necessary font files after installing some version of Adobe Reader.
Tuesday at 4:20 pm
Hi Charles,
Yes thanks for your interest. Yes. For the Version of Mac OS10.2X- 10.4X the Adobe Reader is 7.1 . Before I was able to read the PDF with Adobe 7.05 ( I think that was the version) When I return home tonight ( I live in Tokyo) I will see if it is a font problem and just need to download the font support. I am surprised the PDF pages are completely blank except for the title page and the rectangular boxes for the vocabulary. Usually these font issues turn the characters into weird romanji alphabet with dots and dashes as well.

Wednesday at 12:28 pm
Anyway, I’m running Adobe Reader 9 on my Mac without the ability to print. Hopefully, this will be improved or corrected in a later version. But the lack of support from technical service people at JP101 and KC101 pretty much speaks for itself.
Wednesday at 11:46 pm
JKid-san,
Thank you for the useful links. Nihongo wo kaku nowa tanoshimi desu yo.
Friday at 1:30 am
David-san,
For versions of Windows before Vista it can be quite difficult so I am glad i could help.
I remember being so happy finally being able to type in Japanese after getting everything working.
Saturday at 1:13 pm
I remember Eric said that 5 yen is Naomi’s favorite coin. I know it’s from the cultural meaning of “ご縁(good karma)”. Then Eric said his favorite is 100 yen. Does that have a cultural meaning too?
Sunday at 11:36 pm
Mark-san,
Unfortunately, my preference for the 100-yen coin has no deeper meaning than the fact that I think it’s the most aesthetically pleasing. Its weight, thickness, the font of the ‘100,’ and the three flowers on the back are what really do it for me. If I did coin tricks, I would do them with the 100-yen coin.
Tuesday at 11:51 pm
I’m working my way through this lesson again, because I found that the shift to Japanese style numbers very very confusing. In the pdf, I found this question:
5.nana-sen go-hyaku ni-jū yon(七千百二十四)→_
In the kana portion, it appears that it says nana-sen hyaku ni-jū yon, ie 7124 not 7524. Am I reading this typo correctly?
Finally, is there a way to make iTunes (mac) open pdf’s with Adobe Acrobat or Reader, rather than with Preview? It’s really annoying to have to reveal the file in the finder and then select Open With… Does anyone know how to do that?
Wednesday at 10:52 am
Mark san> thank you for pointing that out!! Sugoi

エリックさん>Will fix the PDF now, thank you
About the PFD tech problem, someone who knows about it in our team will reply to that

Hmmm. I seem to remember a 500 円 note when I was there between 1970 and 1976 and 100 円 was the largest coin denomination. I wonder when this changed? I am more sure about the existence of the 500 円 札 than I am of the non-existence of the 500 円 玉 at the time.

500円札!That’s so なつかしい~
500円玉 came into use in 1982.
According to wiki, 500円札 was manufactured (printed??) until 1985 and commonly used until late 80s or early 90s.
Thanks for bringing that topic.

Koko ha ENGLAND desu. Bokutachi ha POUND wo mochiimasu.
(The computer I’m currently using doesn’t display kana and kanji.)
Question: Can you spell England as INGURANDO in katakana, or is there a certain word for “England” in Japanese?
Also, is “pound” spelt PONDO or PAUNDO in kana?
Sunday at 11:54 pm
クインシイさん、
(Quincy-san?)
I will preface my comment by noting that I am learning as well so in all particulars I defer to the 先生たち comprising the JPod101 staff. My observation is that the British appear to occupy a very special place in Japan, so much so that there are, or were, multiple ways to express England, a few examples of which I can provide below:
英国 or エイコク which appears to be an archaic form. Or may at any rate to have fallen into disuse.
エゲレス is another form that can be found. It is thought that this is derived from the Dutch word “Engelsch.”
Finally, there is イングランド for England and イギリス人 for English people. These final forms appear to represent the most common usage.
Second, ポンド is the correct representation of the British pound. However, I can also find a character that combines 金 with 旁 (in the manner done in this example 鏡) that purportedly means “pound sterling.” I can not find this kanji in recent Japanese dictionaries (and scanning and attaching in this forum is problematic)…
Wednesday at 10:58 am
Kuinshii-san, 亀井さん、
亀井さん、ありがとうございます!
Kuinshii-san, In Japanese we say England as イングランド, and pound as ポンド, as Kamei-san mentioned.
You can also say イギリス as the UK because it is a common word for the British.
As additional info, We mostly use イングランド when we talk about soccer.
As Kamei-san said, Japanese has lots of words for England and the UK because we have long history.
But recently, 英国(えいこく)is mostly for written Japanese, like newspaper and エゲレス is really historic word because we used it long time ago.
I hope this helps.
