Learn Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! The maids are back with a vengence! Today they are continuing their conversation about the 2 guys who are always saying “moe.” We’ll continue looking at gender-specific informal styles, so pay attention to the female speech patterns used by maids. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san, I’m starting to wonder why these girls took the job at a Maid Bar in the first place…

avatar maxiewawa says:

Sometimes when talking about someone particularly extraordinary, I say

”頭もかっこもいい”

I’ve mashed together 頭がいい、and かっこいい… usually people just give me a blank look…

When you first read 頭もかっこもいい did you understand what I meant? Or did you just  like everyone else who hears it?

avatar sTeVe aUsTiN says:

Not sure what you’re going on about, mate. But it’s all good.

Does Japanese Pod own a chain of maid cafes or something? After 4 of these stories, I feel sort of like I’m a weirdo since I’m the only here who hasn’t gone to one yet.
Guess I should give it a try this weekend.

You guys win. I can’t resist anymore…. must… see… maids… :kokoro:

avatar kitty-chan says:

These maids are かっこいい! :dogeza: :dogeza: :dogeza:
Can foreigners work in a maid cafe? I’d like to try it! :hachimaki: :hachimaki: :hachimaki:

avatar Javizy says:

Sexual harassment moe   直美もえぇ~

What sort of nuance does 格好いい have when used about a woman? Good-looking is a nice compliment for both guys and girls, but I haven’t heard 格好いい used like that about women, I usually hear either きれい or かわいい, but then I do have limited exposure.

Max, I’d go with the extra two syllables and say 頭がよくて格好いい , rather than sound strange.

avatar markystar says:

maxさん、i’ll defer to javizy on this one.
i didn’t get it either…

stevesさん、if you come to akasaka, yuuki and i will take you to the one near our office :hachimaki:

kitty-chanさん、i don’t know…
but i bet you could make a lot of money if you started a 外国人マイド居酒屋!

Javizyさん、you’re spot on! かわいい is used more!

as for a discussion about the nuance of these words, let’s do them in the forum! i think if we started a thread we could cover all the bases there easily (whereas this thread will be lost in the sands of time in 2 weeks….)
what do you think?

avatar Javizy says:

Sounds like a good idea, but I don’t really know enough about them to start it. I’d like to know how to convey ‘hot’ and ’sexy’ as well; they have a slightly different nuance to ‘good-looking’, ‘cute’, ‘pretty’, etc. It’d be interesting to know some of the more inappropriate expressions that guys use when they talk about women too, just to compare them to English

JP101 crew/listeners!

ありがとうございます! :dogeza:

I really like this Guy’s Night lessons!

I come to save and take 美樹、 格好いい from the maids cafe and all that Moe to a better job! :hachimaki:
Ushijima-san you can come with us if you want too.

Marky-san!

Yes I agree you have all my support! S_R_C

avatar Yuki says:

maxiewawa-san
頭もかっこいい means ” your head is good shape, too!” , kinda make sense tho!!

avatar watermen says:

This maid bar topic is interesting. I want to see them flirting.

avatar クリストファー・ハート (KC8UFV) says:

sTeVeさん
You’re not the only one here who has never been to a maid bar.

japanesepod101.com-
I have no idea. You guys hired ‘em. Maybe they’ll tell you if you ask them.
