Mina-san, Doraemon is somewhat of a cultural institution in Japan. It seems everyone loves him. Westerners, on the other hand, tend to have differing opinions about this particular character. How about you? What do you think about Doraemon?

Sorry, but the link to audio doesn’t work.
In the Premium feed with iTunes, I got also only the Pdfs, no audio file.

hmmmm. very strange. it works on this computer. i’ll look into it.
Friday at 7:14 pm
I’m seeing the same problem. I remember Eran’s comment yesterday that there were some DNS issues with the hosting provider that started at about 1830UTC. I know DNS can take a few days to update if they are using a different set of master servers to update their servers. (There are about 3 sets of master DNS servers for North America, last I checked a few years ago. I don’t know how many in other parts of the world. I would expect it to be similar relative to the internet population)
Friday at 7:15 pm
Correction - 1930. I was thinking Erin said EDT, not EST.
Friday at 7:18 pm
i hope that’s not the case!
but it’s strange that i have no problem here, but at least 2 people are having the same issue. very perplexing.

I tried looking up media.libsyn.com using my ISP’s dns servers, and was unable to. I looked it up with a web based tool, and recieved these results:
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: media.libsyn.com
Address: 38.100.193.81
Name: media.libsyn.com
Address: 216.246.5.5
It then redirects to cache.libsyn.com.
I looked that up as well. In short, add the following 3 lines to your system’s hosts file, and you can get the audio links to work. This is a DNS issue.
216.246.5.5 media.libsyn.com
38.100.193.81 media.libsyn.com
205.234.175.175 cache.libsyn.com
My system’s hosts file (there is no extenstion) (I use Windows XP home) can be found at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
Friday at 7:40 pm
I assume the sister sites may be experiencing the same problem. If the links point to the same server, you can try the same solution.

Thank you クリストファーさん,
It works fine, and I can also download the iTunes podcasts (same address?)
I only had some fears writing in the system files.

Now that technical problems are finished, let’s answer your Doraemon question.
Doraemon seems yes to be a cultural institution in Japan, but indeed a little dispised from foreigners.
Kodomoppoi think a lot of european people, when they see old ladies with Kitty bag or salarymen reading Doraemon. Here adults have to look serious, reading Financial Times or political news. Disney characters or Doraemon are for children only.
So I was surprised the first time I saw Anpanman train in Shikoku!! Bikkuri shimashita!
Another surprised french traveler:

Hey JPOD101
I am having problems downloading my podcasts for two eps in a row now…i don’t know what the problem is…Can JPOD pls look at what the problem is? I can download my other podcasts except for JPOD…and I only download Japanese podcasts…
Friday at 8:52 pm
That’s a file that’s designed to be edited. I have edited it many times to bypass poisoned DNS issues, or to test sites without modifying entries on the public DNS servers.
Friday at 9:01 pm
Of course after troubleshooting this, and finding the right info for a work around, I found out my regular MP3 player was full, and there wasn’t enough time to sync the file to my PDA. Unfortunately my PDA does not have a hosts file for me to edit, so I couldn’t download it directly there as I usually do. So, I was unable to listen to the lesson on my way to work. I’m at work now, maybe I can listen on my break.
Friday at 10:22 pm
Mina-san,
Apologies for those of you still experiencing issues with downloading / listening to our audio files. The root cause of the problem has to do with a momentary DNS misconfiguration done by our media hosting provider. I posted the comment below on yesterday’s lesson:
We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and thank you as always for your support and patience.

I can’t retrieve the audio files from yesterday or today (1.00 PST). Is there a work around that people have been able to use besides going through iTunes? Thanks — I appreciate these things happen . . . I’m just looking for a solution other more technically gifted folks may have found.
Saturday at 6:02 am
Um, about zenkan (全巻), Peter-sensei was trying really hard to fit Natsuko-sensei’s explanation into his interpretation, but in this dialog I’m pretty sure that it doesn’t mean “the whole volume” — it means “all of the volumes,” or the “whole set (of volumes).” (I think if you were just talking about one volume, then 全巻 would be “the whole volume.”) In ancient times, as Natsuko-sensei explained, one “volume” was a scroll. It wasn’t that they stacked a bunch of volumes together and created a gigantic roll from them. I enjoyed that on-the-fly invention, though.
Thanks for another fun lesson. I’m looking forward to more about Agnes, too.

Well this outage teaches me not to download the sound files as I go
Saturday at 4:57 pm
I hadn’t heard of Doraemon until listening to Jpod. But my friend came to work a while back saying “omae wa mou shindeiru”. He’d heard it in an anime the night before and thought it sounded cool.
How about Gatchaman? Was that ever a manga? It was one of my favorite tv shows as a kid, in its mangled “Battle of the Planets” form.
And guess what … I went back just now to listen to some of the old intermediate lessons that were just a blur back then … and I can understand most of the side chat! So exciting!

私もドラえもんを全巻持っています。中国語版だけど。
実は、最初の中国語でできる本はドラえもん。ある日、コンビニにいて、多拉A梦(ドラえもん)と言う漫画をとって、読み始めた。
Doraemon was the first thing that I could read in Chinese that wasn’t a textbook. I was in a conbini and recognised the cat. I opened it and was surprised by how much I understood!
そうかんがえれば、日本語でも最初の!
Now that I think about it, it was the first Japanese book I could read too.
今すぐ韓国語版を探したい!
I recommend Doraemon for learning any language.
Saturday at 10:23 pm
The audio still isn’t working from iTunes. It’s been over 24 hours since the Problem Child episode and that one isn’t working either.
I’m not sure about those instructions either. Any news on a fix?
Saturday at 10:41 pm
Dan-san,
I am terribly sorry to hear that you are still unable to access the audio. We are seeing an upturn in the number of downloads which indicates a good portion of the name servers have updated and are now resolving correctly for libsyn.com domains.
It is hard for us to give a blanket ETA as right now it’s totally dependent on local ISP’s and even home computer DNS caches. It is tremendously frustrating to know what the problem is but have no way to improve the situation.
I do know that the fix suggested by クリストファーさん worked for many of our listeners. Here are some more specifics steps to implement it:
) Using your favorite text editor, open your system’s hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or on Windows XP and /etc on Max OS X)
2) Add the following 3 lines to the bottom of the file:
216.246.5.5 media.libsyn.com
38.100.193.81 media.libsyn.com
205.234.175.175 cache.libsyn.com
3) Save the file
This will force your machine to resolve the correct IP addresses and allow it to download the audio.
If you are still experiencing issues after implementing the above fix or need additional help, please don’t hesitate to email our support department at support@japanesepod101.com.
Thanks again for your patience and apologies for the inconvenience.

I just checked out some of the old intermediate lessons I skipped over. Originally, I couldn’t understand them either, but I can catch a good amount of it too now. I’ve been watching ドラえもん on YouTube, that seems a lot harder to understand than the intermediate lessons
Sweet, I’m learning! I think the crazy voices are whats throwing me off
Sunday at 10:13 am
Eran-san!
Thank you very much for your help, I can hear the audio back again.
Good luck to the other listeners that still can’t heard the audio or download it on itunes, ipod, etc.

Enjoy! If you want to contribute too, just add a video reply. If there are enough, I’ll put together another compilation!

Concerning the DNS issue, what worked for me was to enter 4.2.2.3 (which is Google’s nameservers) manually in the TCP/IP preferences of my computer. This was suggested to me by Eran some months ago in a similar situation.
I suppose I can return to the default dhcp configuration (i.e. using my provider’s names server) after some time.
At least now it works like a charm. Hope this helps in case someone is still in trouble.
For completeness: I also flushed my local cache (on Mac OS X) using the terminal command lookupd -flushcache and restarted iTunes, but this alone did not seem to have any effect.

みなさん、元気ですか。
Well, I don’t know much about Manga, but what I wanted to say about this lesson is that I loved the dialogue being repeated at the end of it. I was about to write a comment about it and there you come!!! Great, I believe it helps a lot to review what was said after the explanations.
Great job!!!
Maxiewawa-san, great job with the video, too. I tried to do one, but I didn’t like it, so I’ve already deleted it from my computer. I also don’t know if I’ll be able to do it again soon, if I do, I’ll send you an e-mail about it.

You don’t need to preview your video before you post it. It is best for the group of videos if it is done in all one take. The only thing I did when I made mine was notice that my HT would be called a 形態トランシーバー, so I utilized the ambiguity of the original question.

クリストファーさん、
Thank you for the support. I’ll try to record it again this week, then, ok???

I noticed that in Reo’s last line that starts “Datte”, he twists the vowel into an “o” sound, so that it comes out “Dotte”. Is this a male pronunciation?
Monday at 6:23 pm
Bob1-san,
He didn’t say “dotte”. He said “datte” which means “because”.
Yeah, actually that might sound like twisting “o” sound, cuz the voice actor tried saying like a kid.
Plus, even Japanese people might mistake to hear that one as “dotte” う~ん、むずかしいですね~
By the way, “dotte” means nothing in Japanese.
Monday at 11:42 pm
Would that be a male or female kid’s style?
