Mina-san, are/were your school lunches good? Is/was it an easy decision choosing what to eat? Also, there was a small mistake in the audio translation, but Marky creatively patched it. Just a heads up!

Funny animal sounds in the dialogue!!!

Our cafeterias at schools usually don’t sell actual “lunch”, those we have in universities. The food is usually very good and cheap. It is also opened to the public, the price is just a bit more expensive, though.

One of the interesting things that I saw while eating at a company cafeteria in Nagoya was steel o-hashi! Do university cafeterias have that too?

I don’t think my university had a cafeteria. It had a fast food place, a grocery shop, a few cafes, and a couple of bars that sold food, though. There was one at school but that was not so good :???:

I take it the cheap food is to help students out because

stiamurai,

I have never encountered metal chopsticks in Japan outside a Korean restaurant. In Korea, metal chopsticks are being promoted by the government as an ecological measure to reduce wood waste.

(KC8UFV) says:

And I thought something like this was what was being suggested to reduce waste.

It really is absurd the number of trees cut down to provide for disposable はし.
Even without はし the world’s supply of trees is seriously threatened. China and Korea know they can no longer continue this practice. (China has imposed a 5cent tax on chopsticks). Still, I don’t think metal is the answer (ouch!). Yakari and I have portable はし that come in a little case, that you screw together (like conductor’s batons). But even these are too slippery (plastic) for many purposes. Does anyone know of a better solution?

Chris-san,

However, it requires great skill and industry to eat ラメン, vietnamese bun, or any other slippery noodle with these things. I fear most people wouldn’t give up the wood if they could.

[…] On this episode, there are no grammar points of interest. There are some new words though, 学食 (gakushoku) for school cafeteria (from 学生食堂), 定食 (teishoku) for set meal, and 生姜焼き (shougayaki) which is a type of cooking using ginger. […]
