I’m not too excited about getting into a bath with other people. However, if those other people happened to be women, I’d have to consider it. So, in short, I probably wouldn’t take the single sex onsen challenge. But the mixed use onsen challenge…that sounds pretty good.

hello Miki san, i’ve never been to japan
but i wouldn’t hesitate going into an onsen with other people

These lessons are a bit ahead of me, but this is an interesting topic
Isn’t it customary to go into an onsen in your birthday suit? Where are you supposed to direct your gaze? With girls like Miki about, I wouldn’t be surprised if the eyes of an ojisan or two were caught wandering

While visiting Japan, I went in a women only bath at an onsen. My lady friends showed me how to hold a privacy towel as I went from the washing area to the soaking tub. With only women it wasn’t too embarrassing, still a little difficult for a Westerner like me. But once I got in there — oh, my! I love the Japanese bath!!
As to going in a “konyoku”, I might . . . .

Just saw the news about the quake. Not 100% sure where you guys are at, but I hope everyone at jpod101 and their families are doing well.
Tuesday at 1:10 am
I too just heard about the quake. Hope everyone is ok. I have been to public baths many times in Korea and would say that it is no big deal. Some foreigners definitely had a hard time with it though. I think it is just the western/Amercian mentality that makes it seem strange. We are rather prudish I suppose.
Some of the hot springs are fantastic. The coed baths there are called “family” baths and I have no experience with them. I think they really are family type baths and not just open to anyone though. I’ll have to give the onsen in Japan a try when I get there.
Tuesday at 8:16 am
You know the Co-ed baths are also very popular in Kyushu too!

Maybe the problem is in Western society nudity is usually equated with sex. There again, have you ever been on a Mediterranean beach? I’m sure modesty towels cover more than a monokini does.
In mixed bathing I’d probably already be bright red because the water is so hot.
Also family bathing is a completely alien concept in the West I think.
Miki-san did you know most western children are reluctant to bathe? I heard in Japan this isn’t the case and bathing is seen as fun.
Friday at 2:55 pm
I really enjoy listening to your blog, miki san, and this was a very interesting topic as always. I have a question: Do Japanese people go to an 温泉 very often? Or is it just on an occasional basis? Thank you!

>Hyunwoo Sunさん
I’m glad you enjoyed!
about your question.I think that is vary with the individual.
but almost people occasionally go 温泉.
In my case, usually twice a year.

I’ve been to Japan on a company incentive trip to Hokkaido in early April a few years back but didn’t get to try the onsen partly b’cuz all my colleagues would see me naked and thats kind of funny feeling. Actually, i had the chance to go late in the night but as i got out of the room i heard someone from our group is also going there at that time to avoid the others so i backed off from the plan. So, eventually no such experience.
Wonder how would it be like if i ever visit one next time, worst off its a mixed one…(how to hide) A Japanese girl i met once told me to try a coed mixed bath as its very exciting especially for first timers cuz the girls will giggle at you when you have a ‘E’… you noe wat. Kind of funny the way she put it but i told her no way for me as i will feel very awkward naked infront of the opposite sex. Guess wat, she even challenged me to go with her….
