Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! It’s sokkā taimu (soccer time) again and another argument breaks about game strategy. Will the players start brawling or will they savor the sweet taste of bishu? — high grade sake & a metaphor for victory! We’ll also look at the -ba conditional, used here to set up “if-then” statements. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san, genki desu ka?
Waw, another conditional!!! Does anyone know anything about how many conditionals are there in Japanese and if there is any difference among them?
I found the “tara” conditional in Beginner Lesson # 97, Intermediate Lesson # 13 and # 28 and also the “to” conditional in Intermediate Lesson # 17. Now we have the “ba” conditional!!!! I think I’m getting confused!!!
Mina-san, ganbatte ne!!! Doumo!!!

João Pauloさん、
the ‘to’ condition is very strong.
an example is this:
夏になると海に行きます
natsu ni naru to, umi ni ikimasu.
When it becomes summer, I go to the beach.
(this is a habitual action habitual conditional)
明日試験があるから、勉強しないとダメだ。
ashita shiken ga aru kara, benkyou shinai to dame da.
Because I have a test tomorrow, I HAVE TO study.
(here, it’s strongly saying that if i don’t study, it’s very bad.)
maybe i should leave ‘tara’ and ‘ba’ to a native speaker (Miho先生?)
but my understanding is they have basically the same effect, but ‘ba’ is more polite or formal. i think…

I dont know how many are in Japanese but there are a fair number in C++.
So far this episode has not downloaded from iTunes!?

Michael-san,
Haha… I can’t tell you with certainty how many conditionals there are in Japanese, but there are thousands in JapanesePod101.com
Btw, this episode should now be available in iTunes if you update your podcast. Thanks for letting me know it was not showing up.

I like the new design of the JPod101 homepage, but it would be convenient to have a shortcut to jump directly from there to a given lesson by selecting the lesson type + number. I could not find out how to achieve this without going page by page. Did I miss something?

I still miss the “Ohayou [location]”

Another male voice? Why? We want Peterさん!

“Getting drunk” would’ve been a useful Survival Phrases episode topic.

I do not think this is a beginner lesson .I think someone joining would be put off if this is the first lesson they heard
Very quick ,quite difficult grammar , need to know your conjugation, tenses .The previous beginner lesson was a better pitch but i still think not a beginner lesson either but easier. How does anyone else feel.

Robertさん Keep in mind that this is Beginner Lesson 164, I doubt that someone just joining would listen to it unless they thought their level was there,
just my 2円

Jordiさん, you took the words right out of my mouth!
i’m pretty sure most of this grammar has been touched on before. there’s a lot of earlier material to build on!

Thank you all fair points .Ill try to check back on lessons .
But I do feel if you are able to do this you are certainly not a beginner so why title it under that..How many lessons will beginner have no doubt 1000,s as the site develops. Based purely on the speed of the speakers alone and the grammar content its above a beginner. So it would be in my book in the lower intermediate .Look forward to the comments and Ill listen to the lesson again.Yoroshiku Robert

Is it just me or it there a slight difference between the Japanese and English translation in the first sentence? It’s something like “nande hidari no atashi ni boru dashite…”, which is translated as “why don’t you kick the ball to the left…”. Shouldn’t it be something like “kick the ball *to me* on the left” instead?
