Mina-san,

Do you think this topped yesterday’s bonus track?

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!

avatar maxiewawa says:

Do they really call themselves the ‘NHK’? I mean, ‘En Aitch Kay’?

avatar Michael D. Cassidy says:

I juts noticed you are listing the voice actors - I like that; its good to give them the extra credit.

avatar Alain says:

In France, we also pay about 100 euros (15000 yens) for 2 -3 boring national channels.

But be happy to pay NHK taxes in Japan, because in Europe, if you want to have the NHK channel (only one channel), you have to pay JSTV a 150 euros joining fee and 50 euros/month without material !! (800$ a year)
Most of the lands show their culture to the world with free channels. I can have 2 chinese and 2 korean channels for free, but no japanese channel.

avatar Alan says:

We also have to pay a licence fee in the UK to pay for the BBC. It’s currently £131.50 (I just paid) which is about 30,000円. Theoretically, you don’t have to pay if you don’t have a TV, but…

Lots of new vocab for me. Funny though, 引っ越す came up in reading comprehension in my japanese evening class yesterday. I’d never seen it before. And here it is again a day later. Better learn it

I haven’t quite figured out the bonus track. Was the NHK guy saying that he knew they were in?

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Oddly enough, NHK has spent a lot of money to distribute their content for free. You can watch NHK programming for “free” anywhere in the world.
But there is a catch. You must have a 3 meter (10 foot) satellite dish (old technology). I actually looked into it. The dishes are cheap because it is old technology and no one wants them any more. Then you also need a receiver box for a few hundred dollars.
But in the end, the content is free.
Perhaps they could just put it on the web and save us the trouble.

JP 101 crew and Listeners!

NHK ehhh sounds good  but I don’t like TV that much so I don’t care about it!

I have Time Warner Cable and Road Runner High Speed Service and that’s fine for me, I’m very happy with the service!  (NYC listeners you know what I have and the costs)

Great Bonus Audio keep them coming I also gone wild ahhhhhh!  S_R_C

avatar Daniel says:

Will Yoshihiro and Chigusa soon be back? I miss them a lot

avatar Sindy says:

Daniel-san!

Yeah me too I agree with you!

They seem to love what they are doing now so all I can say is good luck and I hope you come back to say hi to all of us because remember Yoshi-san and Chigusa-san that a true person that starts from the buttom and gets on top of the mountain NEVER forgets his/her roots and where they came from before reaching the top!  S_R_C

You know what this lesson reminds me of, America’s Public Broadcast System (PBS) when they have the donation drives. The NHK seems a bit more extreme. What if PBS knocked on your door to pay for the local PBS station?

I have a question though: What if some answered the door to the NHK collector, but he or she did not have the money to pay. So would their services get cut? It broadcasts all over Japan, so how would they limit the people not paying? :???:

avatar Barbara says:

hello minasan,

Can anyone shed some light on the use of the ‘little’ word ”ちよつと” ?

I am not sure if I just missed out something along the way, and Pita-san and Natsuko-san did address it’s use a bit today, but I don’t quite follow “Chotto mite kuru.” I’ll go look a little and come back?? I’ll answer the door a little??? What am I missing?

avatar Barbara says:

Hey //digitaljo-san,

Funny I was thinking same thing! In Texas we get PBS and I get junk mailings to please support public TV, but I suppose that is too easy to just toss in the trash, so periodically the station will just broadcast hours of someone droning on and on to call in your donation while volunteers sit in the background at a bank of phones taking calls. I always wonder if they are really talking to people pledging money or if they are trying to look good so you get caught up in the mood and feel you just have to call in.

Our public TV is good tho… after all, without them I would have never seen Sesame Street.

avatar Vicky says:

Babara-san, I would say, just a minute instead of I will answer the door a little.

Good to see you at here!

avatar marky star says:

Barbaraさん、

like Vickyさん said, it’s like just a minute or just a sec.
it often softens the meaning of the sentence、or in this case shows that something will happen quickly.
maybe you could think of it as ‘in a little amount of time.’

in your post, you translated it as ‘I’ll go look a little and come back.’ i’d say that’s pretty much the gist of it.

compare these uses:

ちょっといいですか?
‘have you got a sec?’
‘is now a good time?’
(used when asking if someone has a second to talk with you)

ちょっとコンビニに行ってくるよ!
‘i’ll go to the convenience store (and come right back)’
(implying it’s a quick errand)

does this help at all?

and for the record, no one has ever come to my door asking for NHK dues. i guess i’m lucky! (笑)

avatar ミシェル says:

The subject of NHK dues has come up in Japanese media lately…

Here’s an article in English from the Daily Yomiuri: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20070301TDY03002.htm
And here’s a similar Japanese article: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/atmoney/news/20070301i101.htm

Or if you’d like to know more than you ever wanted to know about NHK viewing fees (NHK受信料), here’s the Japanese wikipedia article: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHK%E5%8F%97%E4%BF%A1%E6%96%99

Here’s a whole blog devoted entirely to the subject: http://friendly.blog30.fc2.com/ . It’s catchline reads: NHK受信料は、強制的に支払わなくてはならないものなのでしょうか? NHKへの反発や支払拒否が増加傾向にある現在、冷静な視点に立って、この問題を考えて見ましょう。 (and yes, it hasn’t been updated since last November…)

I just listened to this one today, and laughed so hard! My roomates and I talked about this all the time. It’s so funny because you’re required to have a contract, but you don’t legally have to pay. They come to your door and try and make you feel guilty, and I think mostly guilt people into paying. I was surprised by how many of my friends actually paid for it.
