I don’t think they provide English for the blog. Try Rikaichan.

They have supplied English until this lesson.

Most everyone in Japan is still on holiday. Give it a few days. Even my train station was deserted today. (kind of made me regret paying the full fare, when there was no one there to collect the ticket— not that i advise fare-jumping, just that i’m a poor english teacher who spends all of her money on snowboarding in a country where the banks close for several days over New Years.)
Today’s blog discusses omikuji- the fortunes that you can get an the temples and shrines- and fukubukuro.

Michaelさん,
I stand corrected.
Now I see the transcripts are in the Learning Center for Premium users. Looks like the last two Audio Blogs are missing.
Thanks
John C. Briggs
Wednesday at 1:13 am
I agree about the English transcripts missing from the Learning Center. Sure, we can use rikaichan, but . . . .
It’s not as easy for some of us . . .
Maybe they can update it later.
Well, let’s give them a break because they are on vacation!!

I missed out.

Miki-san
Its great that you went to the hatsumoude temple and go shopping! I also want luck because last year (2006) was bad year for me, nothing was has I expected but I hope that this year (2007) becomes better. (check your last new year blog for more details)
Right now here (NYC) the low prices already past out and going shopping too. We are all a little poor and everything is slow, low and many people are still on vacation. Nothing new yet!
Anyway Miki-san hope you had a great time at the temple and shopping excursion ok! See ya

If anyone is interested, I have photos of おみくじ linked to from my blog entry about NY Day here in Japan. It’s the top post when you click on my name above.

Thank You Daniel-san for your pics and blog! Your website is very nice!
PS: Liz-san I think you exaggerate by saying that with out Daniel-san we would be in the dark! I know he is a light that shines but there are also other JP101 crew and listeners that shine too and have their own light like the sun!

Mikki san,
It’s unfortunate that you cannot see the contents of FUKOBUKURO from the outside and you cannot peek inside to see the stuff there. Anyway, Instead of FUKUBUKURO you bought a nice shirt right? I wonder what kind of shirt it is. My new year is a disaster! My dad scolded me for not going home on new year’s eve. I’m a bad child right?
Take care,
Mart

Hi Everybody!
I have some question… Up until now I am confused on the usage of the “If…then” form, the “nara” and “tara”. I am confused on what are the circumstances wherein you can use “tara” and “nara” without interchanging them… also the “eba” and “plain + to” is the same right?
another is in what mikki said “みなさんにとって良い年になりますように”… how to use the “you ni” at the end of a sentence? I am only familiar with the resemblace use like “ningen no you na roboto” a robot that looks like human. And, “mata genki ni naru you ni, kusuri o namanakya” to become healthy again you must take medecine. And, “nihongo ga jouzu ni hanaseru you ni narimasu” I became good in oral japanese (well, compare before). Please teach me these stuff…. and If these entry has already been discussed and also some supplementary jap101padcast please shirasete kurete kudasai!

doraemon-san,
like you I am lost without the transcript.. maybe when they all come back from vacation, ne? The rikaichan is a help, but as Liz-san says, it is not as easy for some of us…
Lulu-chan-san,
There is a query in the forum under technical support: ‘Can anyone help me with rikaichan?’ that may help if you are interrested. I think the rikaichan is helpful even to those who do not need it as much as some of us.
Wednesday at 8:12 pm
Luluchan,
You can use Firefox besides your actual browser.
It’s easy to setup, and you can find it for Windows, Mac or Linux and and your langage:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Then you setup rikaichan plugin:
http://www.polarcloud.com/rikaichan/
Rikaichan is very useful for us here.
And as I translated 20 percent of the french Edict dictionary, I was surprised to find it here, because original Rikai had only english. It also have german and russian!
“Unique!” would I say if authorized by our grammar purists!
Thursday at 10:44 am
Lulu-san,
If you can’t use rikai-chan, http://www.popjisyo.com is another alternative. Paste a url or a block of Japanese text into the form, and then when the page reloads, mouseover unknown kanji for pop-up English definitions.
I don’t think its Japanese-English dictionary is as good as rikai-chan’s, but it’s approximately the same idea, and it generally works for most browsers (on a PC at least).
Friday at 6:02 am
If anyone is interested I’m working on a translation.

Here’s another alternative. Works just as nice as Rikaichan but using copy-paste (probably its ancestor). Just don’t forget to switch off Rikaichan when using it in firefox

Do you know how many of each おみくじ there are? (i.e. what percent is 大吉, etc?)
A friend told me that there are more bad ones than good ones, but I don’t know if it’s true.
Friday at 10:51 pm
Moritzさん、
Do you find it works as well? I think having to cut and paste means that it is not. Plus, I don’t care for the fact that the developer sees the top level of the site for his tool as a place to sound off his politics.
I’m sticking with rikaichan.
Friday at 11:04 pm
Daniel-san,
of course the Rikai website is only for the browser-callenged who cannot use Rikaichan. It was very useful for me when I started two years ago. Honestly, I didn’t even see that there was anything else on the page, I was so focussed on the Kanji-tool. Now that you mention it …
A plus Maurice

Miki-san I’m just want to clarify the song I didn’t knew from last week blog, remember:???:
The band was call Ace Of Base and the song name is “Is a Beautiful life”
S_R_C
Great song too! This band was from the 90’s but broke up because of personal problems with one member of the band so they no longer exist just in our memories! ahhhhhh

Sincerest apologies! The translation has been added to the learning center.
Apologies again.

ARIGATO!!!!! Thank you so very much for all your help with sorting out my rikaichan problem. I ended up downloading Firefox and really like it much better than the popjisyo. com site.
I am actually enjoying firefox. nice change from IE. though, My bro-in-law (microsoft exec) would probably sway me from using it.
thanks sooo much everyone!! this is such a supportive and friendly community!
