Wow, first today!
Greetings to all!
Tuesday at 11:40 pm
It started, men and women talking to each other,
or to cats
then female to female and male to male,
after that male to himself,
and tehen female to herself,
now we reached man and women to dogs
and further dogs to itself.
What comes next?
Dogs to man?

Many thanks to Japanese Podcast 101, for the great lesson!
I’m a peruvian currently living in Kyoto. Since i found Japanese Podcast 101 have recommended it to everybody in my class!
Minasan gambarimosho!…
Wednesday at 1:07 am
Hanspeter-san, お久しぶりです!
Yes, the imperative of kuru - koi - is extremely strong Japanese! So we had to think up a scenario in which one could use it casually. Talking to animals allows for this. While we were at it, we thought we’d cover some animal sounds.
Pilar-san, thank you for spreading the word!
It’s great listeners like yourself that are helping us grow! Isshou ni ganbarimashou!
Wednesday at 1:31 am
I don’t know about today’s lesson. Do we really need to know how to talk to Dog this point???
Wednesday at 1:39 am
Peterさん、
Have you done a show about animal sounds yet? These are really interesting. Do people know what a cow says in Japan?
You should do this.
Perhaps it would be Survival Phrases… well… you might have to talk to a dog or a cat… No, No, It is a Culture Class because animal sounds are a very important part of Japanese Culture… oh, well, … an important part, … oh… a part anywhy. Perhaps this isn’t really culture. Ah, stick it in a Beginner Lesson and call it a day.
”Yes Japan” did a great show on Animal Sounds and I have always wanted to learn more. They couldn’t figure out the sound for an elephant in English.
Thanks for the Lesson
ジョン
Wednesday at 1:52 am
yeah John-san, that would be something interesting to know. All the coutries have different sound of animals.
Wednesday at 2:14 am
I haven’t had time to listen to the lesson (about to go to my Japanese Class
), but here are some animal sounds (probably some duplication with lesson)
きいきい monkey
ぐうぐう pigeon
けろけろ frog
こけこっこ rooster
こんこん fox
ひひいん horse
ぶうぶう pig
もうもう cow
All curtesy of Kodansha’s “Jazz up your Japanese with Onomatopia”, which I bought after (I think) Belton mentioned it, during a forum discussion about a month ago. Got to go…
Wednesday at 2:17 am
I would definately recommend that you listen to the dialogue and check the transcript, as this dialogue has a lot of natural Japanese. (excluding the dog
)
I would like to talk about the female sentence ending particle わ・wa used by the wife in this conversation. This particle is used as mild asertive here, letting the husband know that there is a way to decide.
It is not uncommon to hear this particle when listening to informal Japanese.
Wednesday at 2:57 am
Alanさん,
This is a nice list. But I think the fun in this is to get Natsuko or Sakura to make the sounds.

Better yet, let’s have the jpod101 crew *sing* an animal songs instead.
There is this anime character (rena from higurashi no naku koro ni) who tends to end her sentences with 「かなかな」. What animal is she trying to mimic?
Wednesday at 4:48 am
Mina-san what happen to Daniel-san? where is he?
miss his posts! S_R_C
Wednesday at 5:59 am
I’ve already come across sentences ending in ‘nyu’ in manga. Also: +nyu = ‘that cat …’ I think. It kinda works in english too.
I liked the nagasaki-ben. Maybe we could have a full lesson on this sometime. You know you want to
Wednesday at 6:02 am
コジロめ。。。この裏切り者!
That was really funny, the voice acting was so good. I can say the same to my dog, he always go to my gf! What a traitor!
Wednesday at 6:09 am
My previous post should have read ‘girls name’+nyu = ‘that cat …’
Wednesday at 7:24 am
Now I want to hear an episode for a cat!
Wednesday at 8:20 am
Wow, you even help me with my Chinese! 方法 = way to decide! On the mainland we say ‘fāng fă’ though.
Wednesday at 12:53 pm
Max-san, I think ‘decide’ was the verb ‘kimeru’, with ‘houhou’ just meaning ‘method’. However I think you can add -kata to the Base 2 verb stem (the one that ends in -i), So maybe ‘way to decide’ would be 決めり方. Any thoughts anyone. By the way, does adding -kata like this make it into a noun?
So the dialogue used:
じゃ、決める方法あがるわ。= Well, there exists a way to decide.
Maybe we could also say:
じゃ、決め方があるわ。
Does this work?
Alan
Wednesday at 1:09 pm
Alan-san, the suffix -kata is the subject of tomorrow’s lesson.
I’ll be back in a bit to address your post.
Wednesday at 8:14 pm
Alanさん、
The Nagasaki Connection has done a Nagasaki-ben lesson before. But, yes, they should do another one!
It worries me a bit that Japanese has a sound for foxes.
Peterさん、
What is a “yuuman”? As in “let’s look at what a dog thinks about some yuumans.” Sounds like another one for the Save Peter Campaign™.
Wednesday at 8:35 pm
Daniel-san, we we’re sta’tin ta worry about you.
I like the ™.
Wednesday at 8:50 pm
Daniel-san,
Peter Peter Peter, blah blah blah!!!
Wednesday at 10:06 pm
Dear JPOD1010 team,
I am enjoying these informal speech lessons but could we soon also go back to the more complex yet daily used expression that I find mighty difficult such as the causative, the use of kureru and morau in the context of getting people to do things for you and the awesome passive form (a first step to keigo forms, too)?
Whilst knowing the informal is great to understand other people and anime, the chance of using it are slim for those who do not live in Japan. Conversely, the more formal expressions are those we get to see more often in reports, news, culture articles and published stuff in general. I am starting to feel that my progress in that direction is getting dangerously slow… .
Thanks a lot
mikuji
Wednesday at 10:15 pm
Lix dear,
Sounds like you have issues.
Wednesday at 10:22 pm
Mikuji-san, thanks for the feedback!
We’re almost there. There are several important informal structures, namely the plain volitional, that will be used in more complex grammar structures. So we just have to make sure we cover them.
As always thank you for the feedback!

I know there would be no choice if it were between my dogs and their love for me. I would win hands down because my dogs (Yellow Labs) love me a whole bunch.
Great lesson and very funny.
あい路が問うございます
(I hope that came out okay. My apologies if not).

Nate-san, 有り難うございます。・ありがとうございます。You have an い instead of an り so it threw the whole thing off.
Practice makes perfect! It is so great to see you using Japanese! I’ve made millions of mistakes! It is the best way to learn.
Please try again! もういちどおねがいします!

このレッソンは素晴らしかったワン。ありがとうワン。
Wednesday at 3:19 am
I was just listening to this lesson as I had somehow accidentally skipped over it earlier. Anyway, I’m glad i found it but this lesson was HILARIOUS. The best was Yoshiさん’s voice acting, especially at the end when he was said: コジロめ。。。
