Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Who’s up for a weekend barbeque, Japanese style? Chigusa-san asks Jun-san if he is, but he seems to be booked and declares kesseki. In the grammar point, we talk about expressing becoming something or some state by using the Japanese verb naru - today with i-adjectives. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and leave us a post!

Mina-san, today’s location is モンテビデオ montebideo! Hello to all of our listeners in Uruguay!
Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

avatar JockZon says:

Hi everybody! What happened to the e-mail? I reloaded the site by accident and suddenly the lesson appeared  Oh, well I won’t complain ’cause this was a really useful lesson.

私はうれしくなりました。

avatar JockZon says:

Ah, now I got the email.

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Another great lesson. Thanks
BTW, I think you forgot the “tachi” in the メンバーたち in the Romanji section.
ジョン

avatar Peter says:

JockZon-san, seeing your Japanese sentence made my day! 私もうれしくなりました!Watashi mo ureshikunarimashita!

Another popular one is:
難しくなる・muzukashikunaru to become difficult
often found in the following 2 patterns:
1) plain non-past verb + nominalizer + ga/wa muzukashikunaru - to become difficult to

回復することは、難しくなる。kaifuku suru koto wa, muzukashikunaru.
it will become difficult to bounceback/recover

2) noun + ga/wa muzukashikunaru

テストが難しくなる・tesuto ga muzukashikunaru - the test will become more difficult

John-san, thank you for pointing that out! It will be fixed shortly. Thank you again! You can tell on what days we receive videos! We’re now up to 12!!!

Liz-san, apologies for not mentioning your video that we DID receive!! Hontou ni arigatou gozaimasu! It was great!

avatar Eran says:

Mina-san,

In an effort to deal with our growing community of listeners and to improve site performance, speed and reliability, we will be upgrading our server environment this weekend. We have posted a blog entry about this scheduled maintenance window. Click here to see it.

Please accept my sincere apologies for poor site performance and slow page load times over the last few days.

We thank you all for your continued support, patience, and understanding as we work hard at stabilizing and continually improving our service.

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Dear Peter-san,
Thanks for updating me on the number of videos. It is difficult for me to get a sense of the JPOD community size. There are a few very vocal people but seem to be many more sitting on the sides just enjoying the Podcasts.

Eran-san,
Thanks for the update. The site has been really bad today.

ジョン

avatar Alan says:

Adverbs have arrived. Hooray, I love those endings that convert verb to noun, adjective to noun (-sa) etc. They really make my limited vocabulary go further.

@Eran,
Thanks for the update. Loading is pretty slow from here, but sometimes the problem is this end; one of the drawbacks with cable is shared bandwidth ;)

avatar Vicky says:

Thank you Eran-san!!! It works pretty good now.

avatar Vicky says:

Ah Daniel-san, today is D-day. Good luck on carrying your mission today. I thought it was tomorrow. Looking forward to hear it! Take-san???/

avatar Daniel says:

Vicky-san, thanks for the encouragement. I started to put something together, but it just didn’t work out too well. I need another 3 weeks of studying before I can be good enough to come up with some good descriptive sentences. On top of that, I only have a macbook pro built-in isight camera to use today. I’ll be ready for the next one. Being part of this community is a privilege that I don’t want to miss out on.

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Eranさん!

You rock! We really appreciate all the hard work you put in. Looking forward to the performance of the new server.

Chigusaさん、

Around here, we use 「さん」, as in Peterさん。Again, Peterちゃん is also acceptable.

Junさん、

You are soooo mellow. You really should get to a BBQ though.

Our Vickyちゃん、

D-Day? Well, it is the day for me to carry out my mission. But, I doubt I can do it to the satisfaction of two certain little birds.

Take Take Take…blah blah blah…

Although I probably cannot carry out those two requests, if there are any requests, let me know. What do you all want to see the staff at JP101 perform? We already have Peterちゃん’s dance on the menu.

avatar Daniel says:

I knew there were too many Daniels around here… That’s probably why I didn’t understand the Take-san reference. Gomen nasai.

avatar Eran says:

Mina-san,

I would like to express my sincere apologies again for the brief downtime and overall site sluggishness earlier today and in the last few days. I cannot thank you guys enough for your support and commitment as we fight through these growing pains.

I have just released a new mechanism which caches our feeds and significantly reduces the load on our server by utilizing far less CPU cycles. I am crossing my fingers that this tweak will dramatically improve stability and provide a major performance boost until we carry out the server upgrade this weekend.

Please let me know if you are seeing improved performance and faster response times.

Thanks,

Eran

avatar JockZon says:

Daniel-san I don’t have any request, just that you go out and get those photos because I can’t belive that none of them has a camera ;) We have waited for so long

avatar Jason says:

It does feel noticably snappier. :)

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Yes Danielさん、

There are several of us. How about adding a last initial or name in the “name” field?

avatar Norgus says:

鬼婆の魔法でうちの猫が化けキリンに成りました
onibaba no mahou de uchi no neko ga bakekirin ni narimashita

Our cat was turned into a monster giraffe by the old witches magic. (I hope thats how the meaning comes out anyway)

Sorry if thats not the use of naru you covered, I’m about to listen to the lesson now. :P

if that wasn’t the grammar point, I’m including the other one now:
化けキリンのせいで私達は怖くなりました
bakekirin no sei de watashitachi ha(wa) kowakunarimashita

Because of the monster giraffe, we became scared.

毎日日常でも使えるから覚えて置いて下さいね!

avatar Norgus says:

Oops just realised my 2nd sentance means ‘we became scary because of the monster giraffe’ sorry people.

avatar Vicky says:

We have 2 Daniel-san???

avatar Brody says:

Hey, sorry to bother y’all again but did you receive my video? I sent it yesterday and would just like to make sure it went through the e-mail alright. I’m not too snazzy with computers so I’m not sure I did it correctly.

Here’s hoping! (Where’s the fingers crossed emoticon?)

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Our Vickyちゃん、

>2 Daniels がいるよ!

Oh, btw, 皆さん、

Don’t you think Our Vickyちゃん should do a video? She’s got the equipment. She’s just a little shy. Let’s give her some encouragement!

avatar Nathan says:

Brody-san,

I haven’t seen your video come through, yet. How are you sending it? If email, what address are you sending it to? Thanks!

Daniel-san,

Vicky-san should definitely do a video!

avatar Vicky says:

I guess we could call NEW Daniel-san??? Welcome!! I didn’t know what you were talking about I got it now.

Old Daniel Beck-san  , please bring me a good news.
Nathan-san, me video???

avatar Max says:

Yeah! Vicky-san moratte kudasai!

avatar Mark says:

One more vote for Vicky-san video. :D

Hope everyone’s had a good day!

avatar Vicky says:

You guys already saw me even PJ condition. Video??? no thanks, let’s see Peter-san’s dance first. Maybe Take-san’s singing???

Btw, Skype video ussers, we are planning to go to Japan this weekend. I talked to Kawasaki-san abit. He got webcam, yeah!!!
Mark-san, we still need to figure it video conference.

Can’t wait for OLD Daniel B-san’s mission.
Mata Ne!

avatar Mark says:

Vicky-san, yes I know we need to figure it out. Need someone who has the right computer and internet though.

Anyways… working right now. Ah, D-san’s mission is today! Diddn’t know that - ganbatte D-san! :D

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Our Vickyちゃん、

You don’t get off the hook that easy. 4 votes so far.

C’mon folks!

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Vickyさん、
One more vote here for a video. I submitted mine. It is always a little scary, but I did.
ジョン

avatar Liz says:

Vicky-san,
Others of us have risked our embarrassment and sent in the video!! Come on, just do it!! Borrow a camera, just say a few words and you’re done!! Please??? We got Skype and everything because you asked, so you have to return the favor.

avatar Jason says:

Vicky, you would deny the others of seeing your Hat of Ultimate Cuteness(TM)?

avatar Daniel Beck says:

HOUC? Sounds like something from the Princess Bride!

Lizさん、

Our Vickyちゃん doesn’t need to borrow a camera. Her iSight works with iMovie.

Thanks for the vote Johnさん!

Okay, we’re up to 7 votes now. Keep ‘em coming!

avatar Mark says:

Oh, c’mon Jason - get the trademark symbol right! Though the symbol does show up small.

Hat of Ultimate Cuteness™ :D

avatar Liz says:

Daniel Beck-san,
You are right about iSight and iMovie. With iMovie, it’s such a snap to do this! Of course, I couldn’t have saved my video properly in the right size without you! You told me how find “Expert Settings” under Quicktime under Share. (Tip for Mac Users)

avatar Eran says:

Give me a ‘V’
Give me an ‘I’
Give me a ‘C’
Give me a ‘K’
Give me a ‘Y’

What do we have?

VICKY… VICKY… VICKY… VICKY!!!

avatar Daniel Beck says:

VICKY… VICKY… VICKY… VICKY!!! Yeah!

avatar Alan says:

avatar Alan says:

Oops, that last わ should be a は。

ヴィキちゃんの帽子はどんあ帽子ですか。
私は思いたいです。

avatar Sølvi says:

Haha! Well, you told me to read the comments Vicky, so here I am… And of course I vote for a video from you! Come on! :D

avatar Alan says:

I can’t type this morning. For どんあ read どんな。

avatar Alan says:

And I used ‘omou’ rather than ’shiru’ a couple of posts back. I’m really not awake & should stick to english this morning (or at least to posting in the forum, where a quick edit covers up my stupid mistakes ;) )

Anyway, I’d like to see a video of Vicky’s hat. Vicky can be in the video too if she likes

Alan

avatar Vicky says:

::looking for my hat:: :cry:

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Yay!

Go go go Our Vickyちゃん!!!

And, with the HOUC!

D’oh! Jasonさん is going to charge for using his trademarked phrase.

avatar Alan says:

As encouragement, here is a video of some of my hats.
Voiceover in english I’m afraid, as zero preparation
My hats

avatar Vicky says:

Geez Alan-san, my hat’s aren’t like that. I was wearing my hat because I didn’t take a shower. They are just making fun of me….

Btw, do you have msn, skype, or ichat ID? They all left me here and I got no idea.

avatar Alan says:

Vicky, sorry, but I don’t use any of the chat apps. There is some help on using iSight with iMovie in the iMove help though
You can capture live video from your iSight camera directly into iMovie HD.

To use iSight with iMovie HD, you must have iChat AV on your computer. If you can’t use iChat AV, then you can’t use IIDC cameras such as iSight with iMovie HD.

1. Open the privacy shutter on your iSight.
2. Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to camera mode.
3. Click the triangle to the left of the camera mode switch and choose iSight from the pop-up menu.
4. Click “Record with iSight.”
The video you see in the iMovie monitor is recorded as a clip in the Clips pane.
5. Click “Record with iSight” again to stop recording.
I don’t have the iSight myself, so can’t give more of a clue.

Then you need to export the Movie to Quicktime
From the Menu, select File->Share
Click on the Quicktime tab, then select ‘Expert Settings’ in the drop-down selection list.
Then click on ‘Share’. A dialog box comes up where you can adjust the various settings. In particular, check the ‘Size’ setting is what you want. The rest is probably Ok as is. Then accept all the dialog boxes & wait a long time while the movie converts to quicktime. Then you need to figure out how to post the file.

avatar Vicky says:

Thank you so much Alan-san. It’s 11 pm here…….
But, I can’t say NO to them. I will my best.

avatar Vicky says:

Last question Alan-san, did you sing?

avatar Alan says:

Vickyさん、
on my video entry? I did

avatar Alan says:

…but since you’re short on time, I’m sure Peter would be glad to have your entry, even without singing. (Actually I sang something different to that requested)

avatar Brody says:

Hi, I sent my video to contactus@japanesepod101.com.
via yousendit. Did I do it wrong? I’ll try sending it again.

avatar Nathan says:

Brody-san,

I just double checked our email, as well as the YouSendIt account and we have received nothing from you. Sorry! The email address looks correct. Perhaps try another site like:

http://www.transferbigfiles.com/Default.aspx

We look forward to seeing the video!

avatar JapanesePod101.com says:

Brody-san, now that was funny!

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Brodyさん、

Just got back from JP101. Got a glimpse.

That was wild!

avatar JapanesePod101.com says:

Daniel-san, pleasure having you down here!

avatar Daniel Beck says:

The pleasure was mine, JapanesePod101.comさん!

Got some great video & photos folks!

However, my mission is still incomplete. So, I guess I’ll have to stop by again.

avatar Belton says:

I’m wondering if there’s going to be a rogues gallery of these videos.
は・ず・か・し・い
I may have to post a link to my efforts.

On odds alone it seems any to Yoshi-san videos have a good chance at a prize. Now the deadline, what time zone are you talking about?

avatar Hugo says:

Greetings to everybody! To bad what I can’t improve the quality of my first video, well something is somethig, anyway it was very fun!

Eran-san, thanks for the hard work!

Vicky-san, I hope what we can chat a litle more this weekend with Liz-san and everybody!

avatar kawasaki says:

I got webcam!!
vicky-san
my computer was restored

avatar Alan says:

@Belton-san

I’d like to see everybody’s efforts, but should we wait until after iLove Episode 2, so not as to spoil the surprise? Maybe folks can’t wait that long ;)

Incidentally, I really like the photo’s on your website.

Alan
恥ずかしく成りますね。

avatar Vicky says:

Belton-san, we would like to visit to UK as well. Would you have skype or ichat ID? If not, would you please send me a PM so we can contact you?

Hugo-san and Kawasaki-san, yes we are ready for this weekend!!!
