Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Today is our 101st Japanese beginner lesson! We’ve come a long way together studying the Japanese language and culture. Thank you everyone for making this possible! Today’s lesson picks up with Honda-san and Suzuki-san meeting up on Monday morning, the start of a long Japanese work week. Today we’ll find out who was the yushosha at the company gorufu taikai. The grammar point covers using desu with the plain negative present progressive form of Japanese verbs, as well as properly using the plain form of verbs with desho. Be sure to stop by JapanesePod101.com to grab the informal audio, PDFs, and explore the learning center!

(I think you can remember more if you try to use it. Also If you can read other examples you remember words more by seeing them in context linked to other words. )

This word haeru.
生える [はえる] [haeru] - (v1) (1) to grow, to spring up

Is this the same word used in the podcasts before Peter gives the English version?

つぎのPeterさんのえいごがはえります。

avatar
Jonas says:

Laura-san: No, the word used is 入る(hairu), to enter (v, intransitive). So “Peters english comes in (inbetween the conversation)”.

Vicky says:

Oh my gosh!!! We did!!! Yeah I couldn’t sleep last night at all. Jppod was all my mind. Last time when I contack Jppod crew, I heard that it’s impossible. BUT WE DID!!!

I was afraid to open this website. When I saw the #s from comments, it made me smile and tears while I’m reading…….

Yeah thanks to all, finally I woke at 9:30 am. And, I supposed to be at work by 8 am. And, still sleepy. It was lots of work eh?

I’m in shock!!!

YEAH!!!

avatar
Vicky says:

oh Kawasaki-san, I send you PM (Private Message) yesterday. You need to go to Forum and check / reply???

Eran-san, there is any way to describe how to use PM? Not many people know about PM.

Michael D. Cassid-san, I send you one PM as well. And, you can doule that # for my age. It was exact the half of my age. And, Liz-san is older than you, so you should respect her.

Still sleepy….

JockZon says:

Hehe you made it Vicky-chan :P 115 posts yesterday. I think it’s San José right?

Excellent lesson yesterday and today. I will be the best in my class next semester because I’ve studied with you guys this summer. I will really freak my 先生 out, right?

Peterさん Where are you? You haven’t written something in the board for a long time, or have I just missed your comments?

Hairu! Aaaaaaah! Yes, that’s the word I looked up long ago, but I couldn’t make much sense of it. “Next, Peter’s English enters the conversation”. Now it makes total sense. Thanks, Jonas.

101 lesson!! omedeto gozaimasu!! Great lesson today!!

I loved Yoshi-san’s remark: “Merci beaucoup!”

Belton-san:
My intentions were good (to join your project), but today I have run out of time to make up a new sentence with today’s vocab and grammar!! Lots to do today — maybe tomorrow? Your project idea is great!

avatar
Liz says:

Oh, I do have time to make another comment: Over the months it’s been very interesting to me to see the interaction between Peter-san and the Japanese speakers. Today is a good example of what I mean: Peter said to Takase-san, “You shouldn’t be too competitive, right, Takase-san?” Of course, the misunderstandings often lead to great hilarity and we can only hope that will happen to us when we speak to Japanese people and they don’t “get” our sarcasm or crazed sense of humor. Does anyone know what I mean?

avatar
Belton says:

I liked Takase-san’s 「なにそれ」response.

Liz-san:
Oh there’s all sorts of timezones and people have things they want to do. I’m not disheartened yet. Lots of people looking but no-one has jumped in. (I guess I know what my sensei feels like now when she calls for examples and just gets our blank stares  )
Maybe over the weekend, Maybe I need Vicky-san to round up support ! (joudan)

avatar
Belton says:

Liz-san:
The Lost in Translation effect.

Oh yeah I’ve had that.
It cuts both ways though I sometimes (often?) can’t be sure of the intention of things said to me.

But when I think of it English speaking people don’t get me at times as well

avatar
Belton says:

Oh and Takase-san is great. I think she needs her own fan club!!

avatar
Liz says:

Takase-san IS great! Today she made her voice sound like a mother.

Belton-san, I made two very poor sentences and I’m serious, warui deshou!!

avatar
Josh says:

OK, grammar question. Well actually grammar quiz questions.. the last question has 飲みっぷり or nomippuri in it…? what is that?!?

I checked the dictionary and it’s not in there.

avatar
Alan says:

I haven’t had time to listen to this one yet, but have loaded onto my iPod & will listen to it on the way to work. ‘Plain negative present progressive’ I know, but that plus ‘desu’. Maybe I’ll listen to it twice. ;)

@Laura-san, I too had been wondering about ‘hairu’, coming to the conclusion that it mean’t ‘put in’ in this case.

@Belton-san, I’ve been meaning to have a go at your example thread, but it takes me a while to put together anything non-trivial. Busy tonight, but will try to get something together on Friday. Learning more Kanji is really getting to be a priority now. Having said that, I understood most of Kazunori-san’s post in yesterdays comments without reaching for the dictionary.

avatar
Bob1 says:

Herr Beck,

Die Aussprache des Namens “Honda” auf amerikanischem Englisch is genau so wie Peter-san sagte. In Fernsehwerbungen der Honda Motor Company in ganz Nordamerika wird dieselbe Aussprache benützt.

But of course, that’s no reason we shouldn’t tease Peter every chance we get . . .

avatar
Belton says:

minna-san:
Thanks for encouragement over “reibun onegai shimasu”.

My idea is also that the threads will be there for each lesson for people to add to as they complete the lessons or come along later. (Anybody who wants to start threads for earlier beginner lessons, feel free, if we keep a common style they’ll be easy to find and use. I wonder what the JPod team will think of 100 new threads in that forum!)
Beuller-san (senpai? ) is very good at correcting usage and Peter-san said he’d stop by as well. Wonder if he could bring Takase-san with him

Daniel-san:
I signed your guest map yesterday but the encoding on my Japanese has come out as mojibake.

So how many members in this fan club and are there signed photos and membership cards

Josh-san:
In my dictionary there is an example
君は飲みっぷりがいいね
You can really put it (your liquor) away.

The puri bit means style I think
振り [ぶり] (suf) style manner

You wha’? Maybe you were misled by my last name, but I have at least twice as much Japanese blood in me as I do German. But I do agree with what you wrote in English about teasing Peterさん! I have my doubts that he was doing it intentionally.

Beltonさん、

Thanks for siging my guest map. Takaseさん’s Fan Club? Well, we’re in the early stage of organization. But, if pay the membership fee, we’ll get those signed photos & cards to you soon. I’m sure Takaseさん won’t mind, since she’ll get her cut.

In the midst of the party celebrations here today, (hopefully setting a new high for comments)
I had an idea. I don’t know if it’ll take off but let’s give it a try.
The Japanese conversation threads in the forums are a bit daunting I think. (Well they are for me.)
So I was thinking for each beginner leson how about just ONE sentence from each of us as an example of what was in the lesson? Use a new vocabulary in some way or make up a sentence using the grammar point. Take what you’ve learnt for a spin but still keep your training wheels or L - plate.
I’ve started a thread here. And if people think it’s a good idea would start a new one for each lesson?

I AM old enough to play golf, but not rich enough to play it in Japan. Plus, I decided years ago only to engage in sports that don’t cost money each time you do it.

Hard to find any free sports in Japan. There used to be basketball courts in Akihabara, but they cleared it out to make a parking structure.
Jason says:
July 26th, 2006 at 6:59 am
Basketball courts in Akihabara? Boy, talk about bad placement…
Daniel Beck says:
July 26th, 2006 at 7:02 am
Yeah, well now even those are gone. There’s nowhere to play without paying. Which is why my exercise is mostly limited to cycling.

Cost and time. That’s why I run; though I do lift weights at a gym which costs money; cheaper than golf, clubs, lesson, tee time etc. Also I’m not sure there are enough endorphines in golf for me.

Liz I heard from from the Jpod101 rumor mill that you were 11; so I’m forbidden to talk to you.
Daniel Beck says:
July 26th, 2006 at 8:10 am
Michaelさん、

While the gym costs money, I think it costs less for a month than for a single round of golf, no? Here in Japan though, a month at a fitness center will run you near $100. Ugh. Can’t do that either (although I used to when I was single).
Vicky says:
July 26th, 2006 at 8:10 am

Daniel-san,

I’ve noticed some basketball courts a few times somewhere between Shinjuku and Harajuku right beside the Yamanote line. I’m pretty sure they are free to play on. There seem to be a couple homeless camps interspersed between them. I’ve been meaning to go take a look, but I don’t make it over to that area much.

You have an interesting name. Where are you from? And your wife’s name is also interesting.

Lizさん、

There’s a break in the rain today. Even saw the sun. Had forgotten what it looked like. But the powers that be tell us it will rain for the rest of the month.

Nathanさん、

Yeah, I think I’ve seen some of those courts before. They didn’t exactly look promising. Plus, it would be more than a little out of my way. When I lived in Irvine (California), I could 100 meters (I mean, yards) in any direction and hit a basketball court, a beach volleyball court, a swimming pool, and a tennis court. Ah, those were the days.

Well, only 48 to go.

Johnさん - I know. This is worldwide party - never stops!
I imagine JP101 has statistics on the subscriber base at least, but I’m sure that’s not for public review.

Vickyさん - where are you? The party hasn’t ended yet - we still have 45 posts to go! No more break for you.

I hope for no rain tomorrow - want to play sports outside!
Daniel Beck says:

No more breaks for Our Vickyちゃん!
Vicky says:
July 26th, 2006 at 1:41 pm
Okay, all the waiting…here I am again. We gotta make 100 comments today!!! We can do this right??? Hope I can sleep tonight.

R= I can’t believe that the most famous person here at JP101 is just a Korean puberty of 16 years old  WOW I thought I was dealing with an old 30 -40 old woman! Sorry for tou too my little one!

Hi Nathan-san, surprised you stop by. You could bring some crew from over there though, eh? We can’t do this alone.

Btw, I noticed that lots of Japanese people play golf and tennis. These are the favorite sports to play in Japan?
John Dyer says:
July 26th, 2006 at 1:43 pm
Mark - Yeh, I’m sure they have subscriber information. They may not want to post numbers online, but I’m sure they could break it into percentage of listeners by country. That would be cool! I guess Frappr is similar to that, but I doubt most listeners post their names on there.

Vicky - I thought that baseball was quite popular there. At least, a few of my friends living over there go to quite a few minor league games.

Vicky says:

Hahaha, but still Nathan-san, it will help us to keep the goal.
I think I’m done recruiting today.

I went to mixi to sign up, it was quite abit of work eh?
They created new community for jppod people. Pretty nice. We helped each other to sign up there if you guys help some trouble like me. It was fun though.

Liz-san asked me this morning….Okay I signed up for mixi, and what’s next?

Hope we can chat in Japanese oneday???

Daniel Beckさん, thank you for your warm words yesterday. Have a nice day - or evening? Mmh, I wonder when I’ll guess….

おめでとう JapanesePOD101
This is great material. I have almost caught up with all the lessons. I have listened to all the beginner, most of the intermediate (these are hard and I have to listen multiple times), the survival phases, half way through the news, and then I will need to do the culture classes.
This has been the best learn-in-your-car series since Pimsleur. I was so bored of listening to word-lists in the car.

Mina-san,

I was going to wait and post the 100th comment but I can’t hold out anymore Let me first thank our entire community for all the comments, support, and loyalty. Without you guys and gals none of this would ever be possible. Next, let me thank all my incredible and talented co-workers and friends at JapanesePod101.com. It is an absolute honor to work with a team so dedicated, passionate, and determined.

As a side note, for those interested, we’ve added Torrent files for Beginner Lessons 81-100 (including the informal tracks) in our Download Center.

Peace,

Eran

So are all you sitting around your computers waiting to post the 100TH??

Well if no one posts you’ll be sitting there a long long time!

I’d like to thank everyone at JP100 for the time and effort in making these lessons. Its an amazing effort; I hope enough of us are paying to so you guys can buy a beer at the end of the week on us.
Michael D. Cassidy says:
July 26th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
If we do not get to 100 it will be Vicky’s fault for going to sleep!

She and Liz are young and should have easily been able to stay up 36-48 hour without sleep. Can we set it up so that we get to 99 and let Vicky post the 100th??? Hard though do-able.
Michael D. Cassidy says:
July 26th, 2006 at 9:35 pm
To go off topic (have we been on topic today?) I would like to recommend to great jazz CDs I bought for my birthday:

John Coltrane: The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings [I was 16 so didn’t see it]. Its expensive, 4 CDs, but absolutely wonderful; overwhelming; beautiful; soaring.

The Omer Avital Group: Asking No Permission: very very good. I love it when I find someone new and young; I buy too many dead people.
Daniel Beck says:
July 26th, 2006 at 9:35 pm
Michaelさん、

Just how “young” do you think those two are?

Where, o where is Yoshiさん?
Michael D. Cassidy says:
July 26th, 2006 at 9:40 pm
Vicky is 16; Liz 13.
That should get a response out of them.

This is my last day at work; off on vacation for 15 days.
I wanted to do 3 weeks but my wife couldn’t take the last week off, someone at her company got fired and she needs to be back.

So in fact I will not be posting after today until about August 14th. I’ll have my iPod so I’ll listen toi lessons; I was falling behind anyway so this will give me a chance to consolidate and go after the informal and intermediate lessons.
Michael D. Cassidy says:
July 26th, 2006 at 9:42 pm
ekk I spelled ‘two’ ‘to’!!

That’s even a low for me.

Great lesson once again. However, I’m still disappointed because I can’t really work with the add-ons and extras provided with the informal conversation. There’s no way we can copy the kanjis and work on them with Jedict or other Kanji dict and as there is no translation or romaji transcription, as a beginner, I guess I’m missing quite a lot.:???:
