POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Yoshiさん、どう思いますか?この会話。
Yoshi: いいですね。
Peter: どこがいいですか?
Yoshi: とても心があたたまります。
Peter: あー、なるほど。Chigusaさん。
Chigusa: SatokoとRyutaの恋が始まりますね。
Peter: あ、そうですか?
Chigusa: そういう気がします。
Peter: あー。
Chigusa: これでSatokoがちょっといい人になればいいなと思う
Peter: あー、いいですね。
Yoshi: おじいさんとおばあさんのあらたな恋が始まりそうです。
Peter: Okay lots of vocab. Let’s get into those.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yoshi: 最初のキーワードは、ごぶさた
Peter: To be silent for a long time. In the context of not contacting someone for a while.
Yoshi: ごぶさた、ごぶさた
Peter: Yoshiさん, how do we make this into a verb?
Yoshi: ごぶさたする
Peter: In the dialogue, we had
Yoshi: ごぶさたしていました。
Peter: One more time.
Yoshi: ごぶさたしていました。
Peter: Chigusa さん、 is there another way to use this?
Chigusa: Some people say ごぶさたしてしまって、申し訳ありませんでした。
Yoshi: Chigusaさん、もう一度お願いします。
Chigusa: It’s a bit long but ごぶさたしてしまって、申し訳ありませんでした。
Peter: Interesting, very interesting.
Chigusa: That’s even more polite.
Peter: Who would we use this phrase among?
Chigusa: People above you or people whom you respect. Right.
Peter: I use this phrase when I see old teachers or the town I used to live in, when I go to see some people who are very nice to me, I will use this phrase. Would you say – would you ever say it to Yoshiさん?
Chigusa: Never.
Peter: At least not in this point. Perhaps after 20, 30 or 40 years when you get a bit older, maybe you will start to use this word but yeah for now, younger people tend not to use this word towards other younger people.
Chigusa: We tend to use ひさしぶり more I think.
Peter: Yeah exactly.
Chigusa: Instead.
Peter: This is a very nice phrase. You can impress a lot of people with this. So if you have the chance, someone maybe an old teacher, an old friend someone who took care of you, if you use this phrase, I think they will be quite impressed.
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、ごきぶり
Peter: Cockroach.
Yoshi: ごきぶり、ごきぶり
Peter: 日本のごきぶりはほんとに大きいです。でっかくて、ちょっと怖いです。
Yoshi: はい、怖いですね。
Peter: Chigusaさん、どう思いますか
Chigusa: 気持ち悪いですね。
Peter: Hah next word Yoshi, next word.
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、しるし
Peter: Sign. When you are searching for a place and someone gives you directions, they often use that word. What’s that word, Yoshi?
Yoshi: めじるし
Peter: And this is identifying object. Something easily noticed. So when someone gives you directions, they will tell you to find this because it’s easier to find this than the place you are looking for. Again more about this in the PDF. Next
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、きがあう
Peter: To get along. Yoshi さん、例をお願いします。
Yoshi: 私はPeterさんとは気が合いません。
Peter: こちらこそ、私もYoshiさんと気が合いません。
Yoshi: えー?冗談だったのに。次のキーワードは、ちょう
Peter: A counter for knives however this is used in restaurants to call for a certain amount of dishes. If you are in a sushi place and you get two dishes, sometimes they will say
Yoshi: すし2ちょう
Peter: Two dishes. In this store, they used 2ちょう to call for two dishes of Ramen.
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、じもと
Peter: Place of origin. Next.
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、でかせぎ
Peter: Set out to earn money and usually this has a nuance of after you get the money, you are going back home.
Yoshi: 東京には出稼ぎの人が多いですね。
Chigusa: お盆とか年末年始になると、すごい東京がすいてきますね。
Peter: そうですね。信じられないほど人がいないです。
Chigusa: みんな帰るからですね。
Peter: そうです。あー、とてもいいです。 okay next.

Lesson focus

Yoshi: 今日のGrammar Pointは、たり
Peter: Past tense plus
Yoshi: り
Peter: Now this construction can be used with verbs and certain adjectives. More on the PDF about this but to give you a quick introduction, you take the past tense of a verb and you add on
Yoshi: り
Peter: And after the last
Yoshi: り
Peter: Construction, you append
Yoshi: する
Peter: So it becomes
Yoshi: ~たりする
Peter: And what this grammar structure is expressing is among other things, for example
Yoshi: ハワイでおいしいものを食べたり、ゆっくりしたりしてきました。
Peter: In Hawaii, I ate delicious food. I relaxed among other things. I did more than this but what did we have in the dialogue, one more time Yoshi?
Yoshi: たまには帰ったりしますか?
Peter: The nuance here is, do you do things like go back home? have you seen everybody? It’s kind of a general way to ask what’s going on with your hometown connection.

Outro

Peter: All right, we ran way too long today. That’s going to do for today. Again stop by japanesepod101.com to get the PDF. Stop by the learning center for the line by line tracks. Again we have questions to reinforce what you learned here in the learning center. So looking forward to seeing you there.
Yoshi: またね。
Chigusa: またね。
