at 1:47 pm
Hey Luis (paisano) Welcome!
Right now we are three Mexicans here Dr Lalo, me and you lets keep it up so we can support each other ok.
About your name that’s what I would like to know too!
Why don’t we both ask on the comments section together to see what happens?

My name is Sindy Rodriguez Cisneros nice to know you! S_R_C
at 9:50 pm
Hi Luis,
You can find out how to say your name here
http://www.keiichianimeforever.com/culture/japanese/nametranslator.html?name=Luis+Rene+Gonzalez+Lopez
at 11:51 am
It’s probably too late to reply, but your names are the following (If you don’t already have a Japanese language pack in your browser, you’ll need it to display the characters correctly):
ルイズ・レネ・ゴンザレスロペス (Ruisu rene gonzarezu ropezu) - Luis
シンディ・ロドリゲス・シスネロス (Shindi Rodorigesu shisunerosu) - Sindy
Non-Japanese names are written in katakana, a special set of characters for foreign words. Regardless of what your name is, it will essentially sound the same in Japanese, albeit with a bit of an accent. The main difference is how it’s written. Once you learn the basic Japanese syllables, it’s simple. Search online for “hiragana” (a set of characters like katakana, only for Japanese words) and “katakana”, and you’ll get some help. Here’s a site with both the character sets, plus a tutorial on how to write them correctly: http://members.aol.com/writejapan/index.htm
The link provided by Karl is a start, but it’s definitely not terribly accurate. Spend a couple of hours learning the kana yourself, and you’ll be much better off.

初めまして。私わ ろりち ばろん です。
宜しく お願い します。
I think there is a printing error in the Kanji Closeup with this lesson. Next to the 願kanji is the practice marks for 山. Next to the kanji for 山is the practice marks for 口. For 山 it’s not such a big deal because that’s easy. However, 願 is a bit more complex.
at 12:50 pm
I’m noticing looking at the Romaji, compared to the pronounciation, and I noticed something. the “u” at the end of “desu” and “shimasu” is silent. They pronounce the “u” when the break down the word by syllable, but I can’t hear it when the do the whole word. The male voice also appears to have a “th” sound at the end. So how is it really pronouced?

Hello, can I still subscribe to the month by month at 8$, even after my free subscription is over? oh yeah and how do I say my name in Japanese? Gabriel
at 3:01 pm
Faldwinさん、the う (u) sound in japanese is very weak. even in the middle of words it is often barely said or dropped altogether. often to raise the politeness level “u” sounds that are normal dropped are clearly said. or when spelling things.
Ryanさん、we have a thread in the forum to explain names! there’s lots of other great stuff back there too!

I guess your name can be written in Japanese as エドウィン デイビッド マンデゥジャーノ ガルシア. But I’m not sure how you pronounce “mandujano.”
bio-san,
If pronunciation of your name in English is similar to “Baiyo,” it would be バイヨ in Japanese.

Thanks for the comment! Your name in katakana is very close! There would also be a small ッ in your name, so: アレックス・ブラウン (Arekkusu Buraun). And when introducing yourself by your full name, it’s actually perfectly okay to keep Western names in Western order (but it’s up to you

If you tell us how your names are pronounced, we can let you know what your name is in Japanese
at 9:51 pm
my name is prounced mark-ka-i, (mark-kai) pretty simple ppl call me markkay when they think the i and a y, which they are wrong
at 9:58 pm
at 9:27 am
Markkaiさん,
Would it be pronounced like Mar-kai, where “ai” rhymes with “eye”? If so, your name would be something like マーカイ (maa-kai). Stone would be ストーン (Suto-n).
at 11:06 pm
k thanks, my name sounds funny, so its pronouced like ma-ah-kai(does the i say i or e like?) and sue-ton for my last name?, and how i spell my japanese like name in hirgana?
at 9:19 am
マーカイ (maa-kai) rhymes with “eye”.
Like maa-kah-ee, but said fast. I hope that matches the original pronunciation!
Hiragana is actually not used to write non-Japanese names (katakana is always used for that), but here itis anyway: まーかい すとーん
at 11:25 am
so i can use hiragana to spell my japanses name, and katakana for my real name, and last name is last name its kinda said liek suit-on?
at 11:25 am
and sorry if im annyoing you with all these questions, i just need to make sure
at 11:53 am
No problem!
Your name, even when written in Japanese, is always going to be in katakana. Your “Japanese name” is just your name said with a Japanese accent, basically
Markkai Stone ⇒ マーカイ・ストーン (pronounced “maakai suto-n”)
So you don’t need to use hiragana for your name at all. Only katakana. I hope that makes sense.
Your last name is pronounced like “sue-tone”. It’s not that different from the English pronunciation, actually!
at 10:13 pm
my last name pronoucded really diff from the japanses way lol, but still close my last na
me is the is the other word for rock in english( kinda embassring last name lol) so it looks like i got to learn katanana now
im already learning hiragana, katanana looks weird so i deicdided to learn hiragana like 4 days ago, im trying to remember that alphbet
oh well
at 9:23 am
how do i say my name in japanese? its zehra sadique
at 10:02 am
Zehraさん,
Is your name pronounced zeh-rah sah-deek? Then it would be written ゼーラ・サディーク (Ze-ra Sadi-ku).
at 10:08 am
Yes it’s pronounced zeh-rah sah-dik because the last two letters in Sadique is not pronounced, they are silent.
So I’m guessing sah-deek should be right if it’s being pronounced with an “I” rather than an “e”?
at 10:14 am
Could it be done like this? (I used the Japanese keyboard)
ぜーら さぢーく
at 10:22 am
Zehraさん,
You typed your name using hiragana, and usually foreign names are written in katakana (what I typed above). So it’s not wrong, but katakana is usually used for foreign names.
If you are just starting out and are not sure what the difference is between them, this link might help:

just want to ask why the japanese symbol for “ha” in “ha”jimimashite is the same as the symbol for “wa” in watashi “wa” on the picture…..

Jordyさん,
Your name would become ジョーディ・ショール (Jo-di Sho-ru)
Abyさん,
Good question! The “wa” in “watashi wa” is known as a particle that marks the topic of a sentence. It is pronounced “wa” but it is always written using hiragana “ha” (は). Just something you have to remember

And both are formal expressions.

Keithさん,
Your name would be キース・ベネディクト (Kiisu Benedikuto) in Japanese
at 4:50 am
Thank-you very much, once question if I may.
I understand that Kiisu is キース
and that Benedikuto is ベネディクト
When I introduce myself as in:
Watashi was Benedikuto kiisu desu.
It is last name first, first name last.
When the name is written in kana form is it also written this way normally? so the above would introduction would become:
私はベネディクトキースデス.
Please correct me on above, thank-you
at 9:51 am
Hello Keith,
It’s actually standard for non-Japanese to give their name in the Western order when introducing oneself: first name followed by last name. So you could introduce yourself like this:
私はキースベネディクトです。:)

Hello!
I started Today whit this superb learning tool!, and just one cuestion is bothering me after this lesson and its as follows:
If the character in hiragana for “wa” is わ why in the example the particle “wa”, afeter “watashi”, is writen whit “ha” はinstead?
at 9:46 am
Soromon-san,
Welcome to JapanesePod101.com!
It is because wa written as は is a particle which indicates that the noun it follows is the topic/subject of the sentence.
Otherwise we write wa as わ.

I’ve been poking around, this is tremendous fun.
at 3:29 pm
> Jehno Jorolan san,

I’m sorry; I’m not too sure how to read your name
I think your name in Japanese would be ジェノ・ジョロラン (read [Jeno Jororan]).
> o3o-san,

This lesson is all about the self-introduction, which is difficult to literally translate. I think you can just learn “how to say”, without breaking every single line down; it’s easier. If there’s ANY question, please feel free to ask us!!
You’re very young and started learning Japanese already! Great!!
We’ll support your study as much as we can. Good luck!
> Cindy Wood san
Your sentence is perfect!
And your surname Wood will be pronounced like “uddo”.
The pronunciation of W doesn’t really exist in Japanese (not the same pronunciation).
Enjoy “poking around”

Hello i just joined and it seems facinating (: i was just wondering how could i say my name in japanese, its Eduardo Garcia
thanks!
at 7:32 am
Doumo arigato gozaimashita, Natsuko-san!
Another question: I’m a long-time student of karate, studying Japanese in anticipation of a training trip to Okinawa in about a year. Right now I have a very karate oriented vocabulary (lots of body parts, strikes and counting) and relatively few skills in grammar, since we use Japanese in the dojo only for technique names and commands, rather than conversation. Where would you suggest I start out of the amazing list of possible series?
The politeness levels make me a bit nervous. I don’t want to offend the head of our system in his own dojo!
at 2:58 pm
> Lalo-san,
Welcome
Your name must be エドゥアルド・ガルシア (eduarudo garushia). The name Eduardo is either エドゥアルド (eduarudo, as I wrote already) or エドアルド (edoarudo).
Is Garicia Spanish name? If “cia” is supposed to be pronounced like Italian, it’d be ガルチア (garuchia).
> Cindy Wood san,
Cool!

Wow, so you’re a Karate woman!
Don’t be nervous about politeness levels; if a VERY FLUENT Japanese speaker (who is not Japanese) speaks with wrong politeness level, Japanese people might feel a bit unhappy, but still in such case, people usually are very kind and generous enough to tell you the right way when they find the right timing.
If you’re not very confident about your grammar, what I recommend is to start from the beginner level. That’s what I usually do (I myself was and still am a language learner). Listen to the first some lessons (audio), and the dialog was easy enough for you to understand, then skip to the next. When you find the grammar you don’t know, that’s exactly where you should start with!
The (another) good thing of starting from beginner level is that, in Japanese course, first speech level (politeness level) is always the one you can use to anyone without offending, because it’s kind a polite!
Good luck!

Hello, I’m wondering how to pronounce my name in japanese ??
it’s Þorbjörn Atli Bergvinsson, I’m icelandic and I know this would be hard to translate to japanese ;s
Arigato gozaimasu
at 10:33 am
Hi there Þorbjörn!
I actually have some Icelandic friends here in Tokyo, and they say no Japanese person has ever been able to pronounce their names properly
Even I have difficulty with them!
Could you possibly tell me how you pronounce your name using the Roman alphabet? Then I can give you the Japanese pronunciation.
Thank you!
at 2:19 pm
Yeah sure, it’s pronounced Thorbjorn Atli Bergvinsson (the ‘Þ’ is like ‘th’ in english) if that isn’t what you meant then I don’t know what you mean
at 8:25 pm
Hi again Þorbjörn!
Thanks for the clarification
. I think your name would be:
ソーブジョルン アトゥリ ベルグヴィンソン
So- bu jo ru n a tu ri be ru gu vin son
I hope that pronunciation was correct! Your name has a lot of sounds that don’t exist in Japanese, like “th”!
at 2:09 pm
hi! I’ve recently started with this program and i must say i like it so far. I’ve wanted to learn japanese for quite a while now and I’m glad to see a great site like this. Anyway…I think I’ve found my Japanese name, except for my last name…probably because it is a bit weird. I would like some help to gauge the accuracy of what I’ve found and with finding something for my last name.
My first name is Richard which i think translates to Richaado.
My middle name is Steve / Sutiivu.
My last name is Sprague (the ~ue is silent…I dont know if that matters or not)
any help is greatly appreciated, and if possible, could you help to break the first 2 japanese names down into the specific syllables?
thanks in advance
at 7:37 pm
Richard-san,
Thank you for your positive comments! We hope you enjoy learning Japanese with us
Your name in Japanese would be:
リチャード ・スティーヴ・スプラーグ
Ri chaa do Sutiibu Supuraagu
I know you said the “ue” at the end of “Sprague” is silent, but Japanese doesn’t have any single consonant sounds, so “g” turns into “gu”.
Hope this helps!

Hello! Thanks for the lessons, it’s been very helpfull in my japanese study, but I was wondering about something.
My name is Marcos Soares, which can be written マルコス・ソアレス, but most people call me Coscos, and I don’t really know how to write that in japanese. I tought about コスコ, but that’s just Cosco, with the last S missing. Could you please help me out?
Thanks!

Marcos-san,
Kon’nichiwa, Coscos
That would be コスコス, and you’re right about last “s”
Natsuko/JapanesePod101.com
at 12:56 am
I love how practical these are. I’m also quite fond of the fact that the quizes build on each other, so that you have to remember information from other lessons as well. It’s very helpful, I was sort of afraid that each lesson would be disjointed and it would make it more difficult. But nope. ^_^
I am vaguely curious what my name in Japanese would be, it’s “Skye Rathke” and I have no idea how to go about translating it.
at 8:36 am
Thanks Natsuko.
I actually tought about コスコス, but as I had no one around to help me I went to google translator to help myself out, and while コスコ was beeing translated to Cosco, コスコス was Kosukosu, so I tought that the ス in the end of the word would make some difference in pronunciation.
Shouldn’t had trusted google as always

Skye-san,
Thank you for your comment!
We’re glad to hear that.
Your name is spelled スカイ・ラトケ or ラートケ depending on the pronunciation of “Ra.”

Kj-san Kon’nchiwa,
To make sure, your name is ”Kj,” right?
Then it is pronounced as キィ “Ki-i.”
This would be quite different from your original pronunciation but it is what is called in Japanese.
at 3:21 pm
I have a question.
Ok, so my name is very very German. Klara is my first name
Hungrige (yes….it does mean “hungry” XDD ) is my last name.
My first name (directly translated) is クララ or Kurara.
Because I don’t really have any Japanese friends, I have to ask.
How funny does this sound?
For Chinese (learning it right now), you can’t really directly translate your name. Chinese names have meaning behind them, so most of the time you must get a Chinese name.
I know that it’s not exactly the same in Japanese, but my name could still sound funny when directly translated. Help please
at 9:51 pm
I can’t find where to find my name in Japanese. Can you help me?
at 12:21 pm
Klara-san,
In Japanese we just write foreign names just by sounds in Katakana.
Your name would be クララ・フンリゲ(Kurara Funrige) but I’m not sure how you pronounce “Hungrige.”
If the romanization doesn’t suits thre correct sound, please let us know.
Brandon-san Kon’nichiwa.
Of course!
Your name is spelled out as ブランドン・ミッチェル(Burandon Mitcheru).
If ‘don’ as in Brandon is pronounced more like ‘a’ than ‘o,’ you can also use ブランダン(Burandan). This is up to you.
I hope this helps.
at 8:39 pm
Konnichiwa.
I have a small concern.
I did flashcards just a short while ago.
And “Yoroshiku onegai shimasu” in the flashcards says it means “pleased to meet you.”
So can it mean both pleased to meet you and please be kind to me, seeing how in english the two lines are different.
Anata wa watashi o tasukeru koto ga dekiru baai ni kansha.
Arigato gozaimasu.
at 2:33 pm
Cierra-san,
Yes, you’re right.
There’s actually no transliteration for “yoroshiku onegai shimasu”.
So, we usually explain that “yoroshiku onegai shimasu” means “please be kind to me” or “pleased to meet you”; it really depends on people how to translate it.
Because this expression is VERY Japanese, there’s no way to say exactly the same thing in Enlgish. It’s the expression when you ask a favour to someone, and the reason we say this at self-introduction is because we’re asking “please be kind to me” type of thing.
Does this help? Hope so!

Sugoi! Finished this lesson
Man, it’s nice to use the Voice Recorder. Although it’s not a voice recognition kind, it gives me the idea of how well I pronounce the words. Comparing it to the audio here on JPOD101 really helps.
I can truly say I’m still horrible with my voice XD I guess when you’ve spoken English most of the time and Filipino (yes, I’m a Filipino. But ironically, I’m better with English than my own country’s language.) but I’m beginning to feel the improvement. I think I’ll keep using the Voice Recorder every now and then. It helps to know what I really sound like.
All right… onto the last Intro Lesson 3! Then, I’ll begin the All About series.

Hi, I noticed something in the sentence in the picture “Watashi wa” that the last kana is a Ha and not a Wa. I’m a bit confused if it is supposed to be written like that?
I can also guess that my name would be like “Maku Koro”?
Watashi wa, Koro Maku-desu.
I really find this website helpful!
at 9:31 am
Ohayou, Max-san.
Yes, that’s one thing that confused me as well. But I found out recently that when the WA is used as a particle, it’s written like that. I’ve seen it in almost all Japanese sentences. So yes, the WA in “Watashi wa” is written like that.
at 2:56 pm
> Max Corro san,
You’re right: like Miguel Marfori san replied to you already, “wa” in “watashi wa” IS supposed be written like that (は).
This “wa” is particle and is one of few irregulars in writings. Please just

Hello, my name is Josie, or Josephine, what would that be in Japanese?
onigaishimasu!
at 7:47 pm
JosephineL.-san,
Is “s” in Josie pronounced as [z] just like your complete name Josephine?
If so, Josie should be ジョージー [joo jii] with long “o” and “i” sounds.
Josephine is ジョゼフィーン [jo ze fii n]
Natsuko(奈津子),
Team JapanesePod101.com
at 3:32 am
the S in Josie is more pronounced like an s but it depends on accent so the z sound is perfectly fine too. so thankyou! I quite like Joo jii! sugoi!
Doumo!
Josie.
at 2:06 pm
JosephineL.-san,
Oh, in that case, ジョーシー [joo shii] or ジョシー [joshii]

Hello there. I would like to know my Japanese name aswell
my name is: Daniel Nemeth
Thank You
at 7:51 am
I am Raymond Whitaker, I’m excited that I have found this site and I was curious is there another way you can tell me how to get my name in japanese because I tried one of the links you put in the comments and the site said it is unavailable.
at 2:15 am
Hajimemashite! Watashi wa Kurisuti desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
My name in english is Kristy in Japanese it is Kurisuti, correct?
at 4:35 pm
> Daniel-san,
Your name in Japanese would be ダニエル・ネメス [da ni e ru ne me su], but if your
surname Nemeth is pronounced with long “ne” sound at the beginning, it’d be
ネーメス [nee me su] (this ー shows the previous sound should be prolonged).
> Raymond Whitaker san,
we’re very sorry for the problem you had!
Your name should be レイモンド・ウィテカー [re i mo n do wi te kaa]; does this
sound right to you? If not, please let us know how your name should sound like,
and we can tell you better!
> Kurisuti-san,
hajimemashite! Watashi wa Natsuko desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!
Yes, your name in Japanese is spelled correctly!
If you want to know in Katakana, it’s クリスティー or クリスティ (the first one
is with long sound at the end, like “kurisutii” and the latter is short
“ti” sound “kurisuti”). Usually it’s クリスティー with long “tii” at the end

Hi Jerrica,
It would be a little difficult to go back and include all of the stroke order information now, but you can use this page we have to look up the stroke order for any kanji (and see it in animation format!)
