Adjective Conjugation

Postby joshiseito27_510037 » January 29th, 2017 10:44 am

Hello Everyone! I just needed to ask a question, I noticed that some adjectives, like たのしい(tanoshii) and かなしい(Kanashii)、 have the suffix しみ (shimi), Or specifically dropping the い and adding み(mi) like たのしみ(Tanoshimi) and かなしみ (Kanashimi). What effect does adding しみ(shimi) to an adjective have on the meaning of the adjective? Thanks!

+み is the thing itself. So たのしい means enjoyable, while たのしみ is enjoyment. This is distinct from たのしさ, which is the degree or extent of enjoyment.
