Translation Help

Postby truthskr23_508520 » October 19th, 2015 3:07 am

Konichiwa. I am an absolute beginner. I have been watching a Japanese children's Hiragana training cartoon and I spent a couple of hours analysing the words. There are two that I just can't seem to find a translation for. Could someone help?

mochitsuki - is this a rice cake ceremony? I am unsure.

ratsukasan (or could be ratsukakin) -- I am stumped. The cartoon image shows a figure jumping out of a plane with a parachute.

Domo arigato. :)

mochitsuki - is this a rice cake ceremony? I am unsure.

餅搗き (もちつき) ⇒ rice pounding (pounding rice to make mochi, a kind of paste)

ratsukasan (or could be ratsukakin) -- I am stumped. The cartoon image shows a figure jumping out of a plane with a parachute.

落下傘 (らっかさん) ⇒ a parachute.

The small tsu in らっかさん isn't pronounced as 'tsu'; it indicates that the next consonant sound (i.e. the 'k' of 'ka') is doubled. So it's actually' rakkasan' and the double 'k' is pronounced as in 'black cat'.

Hope that helps.
