INTRODUCTION
Gabriella: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Japanese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gabriella: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where did you learn Japanese?” In Japanese this is
Kaori: どこで日本語を学びましたか。
(どこでにほんごをまなびましたか。 Doko de nihongo o manabimashita ka.)
Gabriella: The first word in the question is
Kaori: どこ
(doko)
Gabriella: meaning “where” in English.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) どこ
(doko)
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kaori: どこ
(doko)
{Pause}
Gabriella: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kaori: で
(de)
Gabriella: the place marking particle meaning “in,” or “at.”
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) で
(de)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: で
(de)
{Pause}

{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kaori: を
(o)
Gabriella: the object marking particle.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) を
(o)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: を
(o)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: どこ で 日本語 を
(どこ で にほんご を Doko de nihongo o)
{pause}
Gabriella: And after that
Kaori: 学びました
(まなびました manabimashita)
Gabriella: meaning “studied,” “learned.”

(まなびました manabimashita)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: 学びました
(まなびました manabimashita)
{Pause}

Konnichiwa! JapanesePod de manabimashita.

Hi red,

Thank you for your comment!

Both are natural and used often.

"manabu" is translated "to learn", "to study" and "to work"(as a student), and it means to do something to get some knowledges.

"narau" is also translated "to learn" and "to study", and it means to learn something from someone.

If you study something by yourself, you don't say "narau".

hello,

Is "Doko de nihongo o manabimashita ka?" better than "Doko de Nihongo o naraimashita ka?" which is more natural and used more often. What's the verb difference? thanks
