INTRODUCTION
Gabriella: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Japanese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Gabriella: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where do you live?” In Japanese this is
Kaori: どこに住んでいますか。
(どこにすんでいますか。 Doko ni sunde imasu ka.)
The first word in the question is
Kaori: どこ
(doko)
Gabriella: meaning "where" in English.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) どこ
(doko)
Gabriella: Listen again and repeat.
Kaori: どこ
(doko)
{Pause}
Gabriella: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is...
Kaori: に
(ni)
Gabriella: the place marking particle, meaning "in"
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) に
(ni)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: に
(ni)
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: どこに
(doko ni)
{pause}
And next
Kaori: 住んでいます
(すんでいます sunde imasu)
Gabriella: meaning "to be living" or "to live."
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 住んでいます
(すんでいます sunde imasu)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: 住んでいます
(すんでいます sunde imasu)
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: どこに 住んでいます
(どこに すんでいます Doko ni sunde imasu)
{pause}
Next is
Kaori: か
(ka)
Gabriella: the question marking particle.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) か
(ka)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: か
(ka)
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kaori: どこに 住んでいますか
(どこに すんでいますか。 Doko ni sunde imasu ka.)
{pause}
Gabriella: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Where do you live?”
Kaori: ニューヨークに住んでいます。
(ニューヨークにすんでいます。 Nyuyoku ni sunde imasu.)
Gabriella: "I live in New York.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kaori: (Slow) ニューヨークに住んでいます。
(ニューヨークにすんでいます。 Nyuyoku ni sunde imasu.)
{pause}
Gabriella: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kaori: ニューヨーク
(Nyuyoku)
Gabriella: which is “New York.”
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) ニューヨーク
(Nyuyoku)
Gabriella: Now repeat
Kaori: ニューヨーク
(Nyuyoku)

Gabriella: And next
Kaori: 住んでいます
(すんでいます sunde imasu)

Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 住んでいます
(すんでいます sunde imasu)
Gabriella: Now repeat.
Kaori: 住んでいます
(すんでいます sunde imasu)
{Pause}
Gabriella: Listen to the speaker say, "I live in New York.", and then repeat.
Kaori: ニューヨークに住んでいます。
(ニューヨークにすんでいます。 Nyuyoku ni sunde imasu.)

Gabriella: To use a different phrase, replace “New York” with “Seoul.”
Kaori: ソウル
(Souru)
Gabriella: Seoul
Kaori: (slow) ソウル (regular) ソウル
(Souru) (Souru)
Gabriella: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Seoul.”
Kaori: ソウルに住んでいます。
(ソウルにすんでいます。 Souru ni sunde imasu.)
Gabriella: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “New York” with “Seoul.” Say “I live in Seoul.”
{pause}

Hi Loh,

Thank you for the comment and sorry for our late reply.

しゅっしんはどこですか?(Where are you from?)

This can be asked as

どこ のしゅっしんですか? (どこ is located at the beginning.)

Where is A located?

You can say this in Japanese in two ways:

A はどこにありますか?

どこにAはありますか?

So the location of どこ in a sentence is not that important in Japanese.

Hi, I am an absolute beginner.

I have a question: based on Lesson 2 and Lesson 3

I noticed when we ask "where are you from" - しゅつしんはどこありますか

and ask "where do you live" - どこにしすんでいますか

Why is it that "どこ" is placed one in the centre, while another one placed in front?

Hi Leo,

Thank you for your comment! Your sentence makes sense overall, however there is a minor grammatical error that I would like to address. Assuming that you are trying to say 'I am living in Columbia', this would be written as 'Koronbia ni sunde imasu'. 'Colombia' is pronounced with a 'n' sound ('Koronbia', not 'Korombia'). The second point is 'living' in Japanese is written as 'sunde', not 'sude'.

We wish you the best of luck with your further studies.

Hello Aidan Sowa,

Thank you for posting.

We have checked the lesson and the Grammar section is complete.

In addition, I was informed that there is no Kanji close-up PDF because this lesson didn't introduce any new Kanji characters. The only Kanji in the lesson is 住 but it's not new.

Please refer to the previous lessons or use our dictionary:
