| Hi everyone, I'm Motoko. Today I'm going to talking about giving your email address in Japanese. Do you know how to spell your email address in Japanese? |
| After this lesson, you can answer the question メールアドレスをおねがいします。(mēru adoresu o o-negai shimasu.) |
| So, let's go! Here is today's dialogue, let me read through it. |
| ニコルさん、メールアドレスをおねがいします。(Nikoru-san, mēru adoresu o o-negai shimasu.) |
| わたしのメールアドレスはnicole@innolang.comです。(Watashi no mēru adoresu wa, enu ai shī ō eru ī atto māku ai enu enu ō eru ē enu jī dotto komu desu.) |
| So let's break it down! |
| ニコル (Nikoru) is Nicole, and polite suffix, さん (san). |
| And next one, メールアドレスを (mēru adoresu o) |
| This is object marking particle |
| And メール (mēru) means "email," and アドレス (adoresu) means "address," and おねがいします (o-negai shimasu), this literally means "please;" |
| but in this sentence, "please tell me" or "please give me." |
| And second person, わたしの (watashi no) |
| This is a possession marking particle の (no), and わたし (watashi) means "I." |
| And メールアドレスは (mēru adoresu wa) |
| メールアドレス (mēru adoresu), that's the same as here, "email address." |
| は (wa) is topic marking particle. |
| Here is her email address, and end with です (desu). |
| So, first one is ニコル (Nikoru) |
| Could I get your email address? |
| And the second one is, my email address is such-and-such. |
| Next, listen carefully to her address. |

| Do you remember we studied how to read English alphabet in Japanese? |
| Here is the careful alphabets |
| Do you remember these alphabets? |
| So panda says, careful! |
| So, one two three four five six... |
| So seven alphabets have quite different reading from English, so please be careful. |
| C become シー (shī) |
| L become エル (eru) |
| M become エム (emu) |
| N become エヌ (enu) |
| R become アール (āru) |
| V become ブイ (bui) |
| and Z become ゼット (zetto) |
| So when you read the email address, please be careful of these alphabets. |
| Second point is this mark and this end. |
| So usually email address has @ sign and .com, or ne.jp, that kind of ending. |
| So in Japanese, @ sign is アットマーク (atto māku) |
| And .com is ドットコム (dotto komu) |
| So her email address is, |
| アットマーク (atto māku) innolang ドットコム (dotto komu) |
| Do you get that? |
| So some of you might know that わたし (watashi) part is really obvious from this context, so you can omit this part and you can simply answer メールアドレスは (watashi no mēru adoresu wa) such-and-such です (desu)。 |
| So that's really really Japanese answer |
| and the more smart answer is, メールアドレス (mēru adoresu)and メールアドレス (mēru adoresu) is the same part, so you can also omit this part. |
| So the shortest answer is such-and-such です (desu)。 |
| So ニコルさん (Nikoru-san) could say, such-and-such です (desu)。 |
| That's it! |
| So, next step is practice! Imagine you are Nicole, and then answer my question in Japanese. For example, |
| ニコルさん、メールアドレスをおねがいします。(Nikoru-san, mēru adoresu o o-negai shimasu.) |
| And you suppose to answer |
| わたしのメールアドレスは (watashi no mēru adoresu wa) such-and-such です (desu)。 |
| But you need to spell out here. And imagine |
