| Imagine Mark Taggart is going to the city hall, and the staff at city hall asks him his phone number. |
| タッガートさん、でんわばんごうをおねがいします。 (Taggāto-san, denwa bangō o o-negai shimasu.) |
| Listen to the dialogue one time slowly. |
| タッガートさん、でんわばんごうをおねがいします。 (Taggāto-san, denwa bangō o o-negai shimasu.) |
| Do you get any word or phrases? Let's break it down! |
| でんわばんごうを (denwa bangō o) |
| でんわばんごう (denwa bangō) means phone number |
| and object particle, を (o) |
| おねがいします (o-negai shimasu), literally “please,” but this time, “please tell me.” |
| And わたしの (watashi no) means "my," and でんわばんごうは (denwa bangō wa), “phone number is…” |
| は (wa) is topic marking particle. |
| 090-0123-4567です。(zero kyū zero no zero ichi ni san no yon go roku nana desu.) |
| This is his phone number, |
| です (desu) is usually translated as "is," "are," or "am." |
| So equivalent to English be verb. |
| So, listen to Mr. Taggart’s phone number one time slowly. |

| So, to say phone number, please make sure three points. |
| First point is, please read each number separately, don't say, like, zero-ninety, or hundred twenty-three, or something. |
| Just zero nine zero, zero one two three, four five six seven, but in Japanese. |
| Second, hyphen becomes の (no). |
| So, 090 hyphen would be 090の (zero kyū zero no) |
| Ok? And then the third point is, we have tricky numbers! |
| So panda is screaming here, so let's have a look. |
| So these four numbers, 0, 7, 4, and 9, have two readings, so please take care. |
| So 0 can be ゼロ (zero) or れい (rei) |
| 7 can be なな (nana) or しち (shichi) |
| 4 can be よん (yon) or し (shi) |
| 9 can be きゅう (kyū) or く (ku) |
| For these, ゼロ (zero), なな (nana), よん (yon), きゅう (kyū) are commonly used because they are distinguishable and also it's hard to make mistake with other numbers. |
| For example, しち (shichi) can be mistaken with いち (ichi), meaning "one." |
| So, なな (nana) is preferred. |

| So, Mr. Taggart is already talking about his information so he can omit the わたしの (watashi no) part. So, the smarter answer would be でんわばんごうは (denwa bangō wa) such-and-such です。(desu.) |
| And, furthermore, でんわばんごう (denwa bangō) is also obvious information because the city hall staff says でんわばんごう (denwa bangō) here, and then でんわばんごう (denwa bangō) appears here again. So you can also omit でんわばんごうは (denwa bangō wa) part. |
| So, the smartest answer is such-and-such です。(desu.) |

| The second tip from me is an alternative way of saying hyphen. |
