| Peter: Welcome to japanesepod101.com’s onomatopoeia series. In this series, we are exploring the world of Japanese onomatopoeia. |
| なつこ: そうですね。There are two types of Japanese onomatopoeia 擬音語and擬態語 |
| Peter:擬音語 are the true onomatopoeia that mimic sounds like our English onomatopoeia. |
| なつこ: Such asワンワン |
| Peter: or bow wow! |
| なつこ:にゃんにゃん |
| Peter: Meow, meow. 擬態語on the other hand describes the situation, feeling or state using sound. |
| なつこ: Such asペラペラ |
| Peter: Fluent in a foreign language. So we hope you will join us on this enjoyable ride into the wonderful world of Japanese onomatopoeia. Without further adieu, let’s get on with the lesson. Now in the previous lesson, we learned onomatopoeia that describes anger. |
| なつこ: Such asカンカンに怒る イライラする むかむかする |
| Peter: In this lesson, you learn some onomatopoeia that express excitement such as |
| なつこ:ドキドキ ワクワク はらはら |
| Peter: Now we can’t translate them without context. So Natsuko san, can we hear them in context. |
| なつこ: Sure.社長に話があると言われた。何の話だろう。ドキドキする |
| Peter: The president of the company said he wants to talk to me. What about I wonder. My heart is pounding. So the first onomatopoeia we are looking at is |
| なつこ:ドキドキ |
| Peter: ドキドキmimics the actual sound of a rapid pounding heart beat but it describes the feeling of excitement or nervousness as well. ドキドキis followed by the verb suru. |
| なつこ: ドキドキするSo that means one’s heart raises or one’s heart beats. |
| Peter: Or throbs. Okay on to the next onomatopoeia. What’s the second onomatopoeia? |
| なつこ:ワクワク |
| Peter: In context please. |
| なつこ:宝箱を見つけた。何が入っているのだろう。ワクワクする |
| Peter: I found the treasure box. What’s in it I wonder. I am so excited. |
| なつこ: Umm that’s exciting. |
| Peter: A little bit old. Kind of like a 海賊pirates or something. |
| なつこ: Or maybe he is doing a game. |
| Peter: Ah that makes a lot of sense. ワクワクrefers to the excitement usually associated with the joy or the expectation that something good is going to happen. It’s followed by |
| なつこ: Suru. Soワクワクする |
| Peter: To tremble with joy, to feel excited, to feel thrilled. And lastly we have |
| なつこ: ハラハラas inこのサイコスリラーはハラハラの連続で見ていられない |
| Peter: This psycho thriller, the suspense thriller keeps me on the edge of my seat. I can barely watch it. ハラハラindicates an uneasy feeling or a worry about how things will turn out as well as a feeling of being kept in suspense and it’s often followed by |
| なつこ: Suru. Soハラハラする |
| Peter: To be on pins and needles, to feel nervous. |
| なつこ: So basically when you are expecting something good, you feelワクワク and when you are expecting something bad or dangerous, you useハラハラ andドキドキ can be used for good and bad. It’s more neutral or actual heart beating sound is also expressed asドキドキ |
| Peter: So this one is both擬音語 and擬態語 |
| なつこ: Yes right. |
| Peter: The actual sound of the heart beating or the feeling. |
| なつこ: Yes. |
| Peter: So now, ドキドキcan also describe one’s romantic feelings towards someone. |
| なつこ: Oh yesピーターを見るとドキドキする。ピーターの事が好きなのかしら wow! |
| Peter: Thank you whoever wrote this sample sentence. Whenever I see Peter, I feel my heart skip a beat. I wonder if I am interested in Peter. |
| なつこ: Umm I wonder! |
| Peter: But yeah it’s kind of like if you hear somebody say ドキドキabout a person of the opposite sex, it’s kind of romantic. |
| なつこ: Yes very interested. |
| Peter: Yeahドキドキする. Okay let’s compare the three onomatopoeia sentences. Now I am not going to give the translation for the onomatopoeia part but you can figure them out from context. Natsuko san, |
| なつこ:あなたを見ているとドキドキします。何故なら私はあなたが好きだから |
| Peter: You make me go ドキドキbecause I am interested in you. |
| なつこ:あなたを見ているとワクワクします。何故ならあなたは何かすごい事をしそうだから。 |
| Peter: You make me go ワクワクbecause I think you will accomplish something great. |
| なつこ:あなたを見ているとハラハラします。何故ならあなたは何か失敗しそうだから。 |
| Peter: You make me go ハラハラbecause it seems like you are going to make a mistake. |
| なつこ: These are really good example sentences. |
| Peter: Definitely and interesting here, we gave you the Japanese mix with the English so you could kind of figure out the feeling. |
| なつこ: Yes. |
| Peter: And one more word I just want to cover in there. I love that word何故なら. |
| なつこ: Because |
| Peter: Because. When I first started learning Japanese, I was like my - 口癖like the phrase I would always use何故なら. Let’s recap the usage of the words we looked at today and we are going to do this with sample sentences. Natsuko san, |

| Peter: I ran up a huge flight of stairs and my heart is pounding. So in this usage, this is擬音語 The word is based off the sound of the heart beating. |
