POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Rebecca: Naomi Sensei 免許ありますか。 Do you have a driver’s license?
Naomi: You mean 車の免許
Rebecca: そうですね。 yes.
Naomi: はい、あります。Yes I do. レベッカさんは車の免許ありますか。
Rebecca: Yes I do have the drivers license, an Australian drivers license.
Naomi: 日本の車の免許は。
Rebecca: ありません。 I don’t have the Japanese one. I think I could get one. We have some kind of arrangement with the Japanese government, the Australian and Japanese. I can just swap it over.
Naomi: そうですね。ありますね。
Rebecca: Yeah I just haven’t got around with quietest driving in Tokyo. There is lot of driving in Tokyo. It is too scary.
Naomi: そうですね。 but in Australia, people drive on the left side of the road.
Rebecca: Yeah just like in Japan.
Naomi: じゃ、同じですね。 So it’s not so difficult for you to drive a car in Japan?
Rebecca: Well yeah I suppose but there is so much traffic in Tokyo. There is so much you have to concentrate on and I’d be worried about dinging the car.
Naomi: Yeah but when you are traveling outside of Tokyo?
Rebecca: Oh yeah. No that would be nice. I wouldn’t mind driving somewhere like 北海道 or somewhere like that.
Naomi: 北海道の運転は楽しいですよ。
Rebecca: Yeah it looks fun. Actually I’ve been on a holiday in Italy and with my mother and we rented a car and they drive on the other side.
Naomi: Which is 右側
Rebecca: Migigawa yes. The right hand side and that was quite frightening because you know it was yeah and also the roads are very small and yeah it was interesting. So I guess Japan is a little better in that respect.
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: Do you like driving Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: はい、運転好きですよ。
Rebecca: Do you often go for drives?
Naomi: 1週間に1回かな。 Once a week.
Rebecca: Once a week. Oh actually that’s quite often.
Naomi: そうですね。 I am not sure if I am a good driver.
Rebecca: 上手かどうか。
Naomi: そうそう。上手かどうかわかりませんけど。
Rebecca: You probably are if you have that much practice.
Naomi: 好きです。今ね、でも、ガソリン高いですよ。
Rebecca: Gas is really expensive. It is really expensive.
Naomi: 1リットル130円から140円です。
Rebecca: One liter is priced between 130 to 140 right?
Naomi: はい。
Rebecca: That’s a lot yeah.
Naomi: そうね。
Rebecca: Yeah in Australia, we use liters. In America, they use gallons.
Naomi: ガロンSo one gallon is 4 liters.
Rebecca: I don’t know.
Naomi: So about $5 or $6 per gallon.
Rebecca: Right okay.
Naomi: Expensive. ガソリンは、ほんとに高い。
Rebecca: Actually we used the word 高い in the lesson today. Didn’t we? What is it Fabrizio said とても、とても高い車です. His car is very, very expensive.
Naomi: はい。ガソリンは、とてもとても高いです。
Rebecca: Gasoline is very, very expensive. Okay so let’s have a look at some of the vocab from today’s lesson.
VOCAB LIST
Rebecca:The first item is
Naomi: ドイツ
Rebecca: Germany.
Naomi: (slow) どいつ (natural speed)ドイツ
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: つまらない
Rebecca: Boring, uninteresting. It’s i-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) つまらない (natural speed)つまらない
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 危ない
Rebecca: Dangerous. Another i -adjecive.
Naomi: (slow) あぶない (natural speed) 危ない
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 運転
Rebecca: Driving.
Naomi: (slow) うんてん (natural speed)運転
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 嫌い
Rebecca: Dislikable. This is a Na-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) きらい (natural speed)嫌い
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 免許
Rebecca: License, qualification.
Naomi: (slow) めんきょ (natural speed)免許
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 大好き
Rebecca: Much loved, favorite. This is also a Na-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) だいすき (natural speed) 大好き
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 大嫌い
Rebecca: Very dislikable. Hateful, a Na-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) だいきらい (natural speed)大嫌い
Rebecca: So we’ve been focusing on the word 好きwhich means likable.
Naomi: The left side of the Kanji means woman right.
Rebecca: Yeah.
Naomi: Right side of the Kanji is child. Woman and Child are together likable or woman likes child.
Rebecca: Yeah it’s a good way to remember it. Isn’t it?
Naomi: はい。
Rebecca: So 好きmeans Likable and what’s the opposite?
Naomi: 嫌い
Rebecca: 嫌い Dislike.
Naomi: そうですね。The pronunciation of 嫌い is bit similar to 綺麗. So…
Rebecca: Pretty.
Naomi: Yeah.
Rebecca: And pretty and dislikable. Yeah you wouldn’t want to make a mistake with those two.
Naomi: そうね。Be careful.
Rebecca: So dislikable is
Naomi: 嫌い
Rebecca: Right okay. So 覚えててください。
Naomi: はい。Beautiful is 綺麗
Rebecca: And what about license. That was the word that came up in the conversation?
Naomi: 免許
Rebecca: 免許. So drivers license is.
Naomi: 車の免許
Rebecca: What about can you say 運転免許
Naomi: 運転免許、言いますね。
Rebecca: Driving license. What about – what are some other licenses?
Naomi: タクシーの免許
Rebecca: Taxi license or..
Naomi: 先生の免許
Rebecca: 先生の免許 Oh a teaching license. Is that what you call?
Naomi: Teaching license, teaching certificate.
Rebecca: Oh yeah teaching certificate.
Naomi: そうですね。 but in a conversation, it’s okay to say 先生No免許but in a politically correct way of saying is 教員免許but
Rebecca: 教員免許 So 教員 is a more formal word for teacher.
Naomi: そうですね。 In a conversation, 先生の免許 is good enough I guess.
Rebecca: Okay so the sentence from today’s dialogue was
Naomi: 免許はありませんが。
Rebecca: I don’t have a license pouch.
Naomi: He said I don’t mind driving but I don’t have a driver’s license.
Rebecca: That’s a bit worrying. Isn’t it?
Naomi: ちょっと怖いですね is scary.
Rebecca: Does he mean he doesn’t have a Japanese driver’s license?
Naomi: そうかもしれないですね。 or わかんないけど。.
Rebecca: I hope so. Well in today’s dialogue, he just said 免許 didn’t he which from the context we can tell he means the driver’s license. So there is no need to say 車の. The car license or the driver’s license. That’s why you can’t hear it. Okay so let’s look at some grammar.
LESSON FOCUS
Rebecca:Today’s target grammar sentence.
Naomi: イタリアの車が大好きです。
Rebecca: I really like Italian cars or I love Italian cars.
Naomi: 運転が大嫌いです。
Rebecca: I really don’t like driving or I hate driving. So in today’s grammar point, we are going to focus on different degrees of liking and disliking right?
Naomi: はい。
Rebecca: If we were going to talk about this on a scale from most likable to the thing you hate the list, let’s look at how you say that? So how do you say I like it very much?
Naomi: 大好きです。
Rebecca: And just I like it.
Naomi: 好きです
Rebecca: What about so, so or it’s okay?
Naomi: Okay so, so in Japanese is まあまあ
Rebecca: Mama.
Naomi: So you can just say mama or まあまあ好きです
Rebecca: Okay. What about I dislike it?
Naomi: 嫌いです
Rebecca: And I hate it?
Naomi: 大嫌いです。
Rebecca: 何が大嫌いですか、なおみ先生。
Naomi: 私はね、実は、鳩が大嫌いです。
Rebecca: So I just asked Naomi Sensei what she really hates and she said, she really hates pigeons. Do you have a lot of pigeons where you live?
Naomi: No but in the park. In Japanese parks, there are so many pigeons and 気持ち悪いですね。
Rebecca: Yeah they are a little dirty. Aren’t they?
Naomi: そうですね。 What about you Rebecca 何が大嫌いですか。
Rebecca: I really hate it when people are rude.
Naomi: You mean 失礼な人が大嫌い
Rebecca: Or well I try not to hate the person but I certainly hate the rude behavior.
Naomi: なるほどね。失礼な is a Na-Adjective which means rude. So 失礼な人means rude people.
Rebecca: 失礼な人が嫌いです。 I don’t like rude people.
Naomi: なるほどね。みなさんは、何が嫌いですか。
Rebecca: So what do you dislike.
Naomi: 何が好きですか。
Rebecca: And what do you like?
Naomi: 教えてください。
OUTRO
Rebecca: Let us know. See you next week.
Naomi: じゃあまた。

Hi Lea,

Thanks for your comment!

As you probably know, kanji has several ways of reading.

冬 in 冬果 has 2 ways. "fuyu" (on-yomi) and "tou" (kun-yomi).

So you need to call 冬果さん in this lesson as Fuyuka, but you might need to call other 冬果さん as Touka.

Sometimes it is difficult to know the right way of reading their name without furigana:)

Erica
