INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, I'm John.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
John: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 46. Talking About a Decision.
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about a decision.
PATTERN
John: For example,
John: "I decided to live in Japan."
Risa: 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.)
Risa: [slow] 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.)
John: The pattern for talking about a decision has two elements. First, a phrase referring to what you decided with the non-past plain form of the verb, in this case "to live in Japan."
Risa: 日本に住む (Nihon ni sumu)
John: Second, a phrase that roughly means "decided to do something."
Risa: ことにしました (koto ni shimashita)
John: Altogether, we have... "I decided to live in Japan."
Risa: 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.) [slow] 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.) [normal] 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.)
John: The sentence pattern to say you "decided to do something" in Japanese is [the thing you decided] with the non-past plain form of the verb, plus
Risa: ことにしました (koto ni shimashita)
John: which indicates one's decision.
Again, "I decided to live in Japan." is...
Risa: 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.)
John: So remember, to talk about a decision, say the thing you've decided, with the non-past plain form of the verb, and at the end just add...
Risa: ことにしました (koto ni shimashita)
John: Here is another example meaning, "I decided to start jogging." First, a phrase meaning "to start jogging" with the non-past plain form of the verb.
Risa: ジョギングを始める (Jogingu o hajimeru).
John: Second, a phrase that roughly means "decided to do something."
Risa: ことにしました (koto ni shimashita).
John: Altogether we have...
Risa: ジョギングを始めることにしました。 (Jogingu o hajimeru koto ni shimashita.) [slow] ジョギングを始めることにしました。 (Jogingu o hajimeru koto ni shimashita.) [normal] ジョギングを始めることにしました。 (Jogingu o hajimeru koto ni shimashita.)
John: "I decided to start jogging."
[pause]
Risa: ジョギングを始めることにしました。 (Jogingu o hajimeru koto ni shimashita.)
John: How do you say, "I decided to give up smoking." To give you a hint, "to give up smoking" is...
Risa: タバコをやめる (tabako o yameru). [slow] タバコをやめる (tabako o yameru). [normal] タバコをやめる (tabako o yameru).
John: "I decided to give up smoking."
[pause]
Risa: タバコをやめることにしました。 (Tabako o yameru koto ni shimashita.) [slow] タバコをやめることにしました。 (Tabako o yameru koto ni shimashita.) [normal] タバコをやめることにしました。 (Tabako o yameru koto ni shimashita.)
[pause]
Risa: タバコをやめることにしました。 (Tabako o yameru koto ni shimashita.)

John: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.

[pause]
Risa: 日本に住むことにしました。 (Nihon ni sumu koto ni shimashita.)
