Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
近森渡: こんにちは。近森渡の「ちょこっとマナー」の時間です。
Chris: Hello. It's time for Wataru Chikamori's "A Little Bit of Etiquette!"
: マナー講師の持田かね先生に色々教えてもらいましょう。
Chris: We're going to have etiquette teacher Kane Mochida teach us about a few different things.
持田かね: よろしくお願いいたします。
Chris: Thank you for having me.
近森渡: まず、ある高校生からの質問を 読ませてください。
Chris: Firstly, please allow me to read a question from a high school student.
: 「親せきのお葬式に行きます。
Chris: "I'm going to the funeral of a relative.
: 制服はつまらないので、黒いミニスカートを履こうと思っています。
Chris: My school uniform's boring, so I'm thinking about wearing a black miniskirt.
: どう思いますか。意見を聞かせてください。」
Chris: What do you think? Please let me know your opinion."
持田かね: じゃ、質問させてください。
Chris: Alright, let me ask you a question.
: どうしてミニスカートを履きたいんですか。
Chris: Why do you want to wear a miniskirt?
: ちょっと、言わせてください。
Chris: Let me just say this, please.
: お葬式はファッションショーじゃないんです。喪服を着なさい。
Chris: A funeral is not a fashion show. Wear mourning attire, please.
近森渡: あ、先生、この人は高校生みたいです。
Chris: Um, Ms. Mochida, it seems that this person is a high school student.
持田かね: じゃ、制服が一番いいと思いますよ。
Chris: Well then, I think a school uniform would be best.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: クリスさんは、日本でお葬式に行ったことはありますか。
Chris: お葬式は、日本ではないですね。映画で見たぐらいですね。
Naomi: あぁ、なるほど。アメリカのお葬式にもたくさん、ルールとかタブーとかありますか?
Chris: Are there rules and taboos at the American funerals? Yes, I think so, but maybe it varies with the religion of the deceased.
Naomi: あー、なるほどね。日本も、住んでる場所や、宗教(religion"でルールがちがいます。でも、黒い服を着る・・・というのは決まっていると思います。
Chris: So the rules change based on the religion and the region, but wearing black is normal. It’s quite the same in the states. 日本だと、黒じゃなくちゃダメですか。Greyとか、dark blueでもいいですか?
Naomi: だめです。絶対に黒です。あと、大切なのは、日本では、靴を脱ぐこともあるので、靴下も黒いものを履いたほうがいいです。
Chris: So in Japan there's the possibility you may have to take your shoes off, so you should probably wear black socks, too!
Naomi: 先クリスさん映画の話をしてくれましたが、「お葬式」がテーマの映画もありますよね。
Chris: Right, there are quite a few Japanese movies that are set at a funeral.
Naomi: 例えば、おくりびと
Chris: "Departures", directed by Yōjirō Takita...
Naomi: よくしてますね。とか、お葬式
Chris: "The Funeral", directed by Juzo Itami.
Naomi: クリスさんは、黒澤明がすきなんでしたっけ?
Chris: そうですね。あの、高校生ぐらいから大好きでしたね。
Naomi: お~。じゃ、当然この「お葬式」という映画は見ました?
Chris: はい、見ましたね。ちょっとブラックコメディなので、笑ったりはしますけども。本当の文化も見れますから。Right, so “The Funeral” by Juzo Itami is kind of crazy comedy or black comedy, but you can also see reality of Japanese funerals.
Naomi: 字幕、subtitles はありますか。
Chris: そうですね、うん。
Naomi: 英語の。
Chris: 大体、伊丹十三の映画は全部、英語の字幕も入ってます。
Naomi: あぁ、じゃあオススメですか。
Chris: オススメです。
Naomi: なるほど。
Naomi: リスナーの皆さんの国ではお葬式のユニークなルールはありますか?あれば教えてください。
Chris: Are there any unique rules for funerals in your country? Please let us know if so!

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usuge for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Chris: 最初の単語はなんですか?What's the first one we'll look at?
Naomi: ある
Chris: "A certain...", "some..."
This word is used to indicate a person or thing without giving its actual name. For example,
Naomi: ある人 “a certain person, a certain someone”
ある所 “a certain place” ある時 “at one time, once”
ダイアログにあったのは・・・ある高校生
Chris: a certain high school student.
Naomi: 童話 “fairy tale” でよく使います。
むかしむかし、あるところに シンデレラという女の子がいました。
Chris: Once upon a time, in a certain place, there was a girl called Cinderella.
Naomi: シンデレラはガラスの靴を「履いて」いましたね。
Chris: Cinderella was wearing glass slippers... Actually the verb "to wear" はく is our next word
Naomi: はく
Chris: to wear clothing on the legs or feet.
Naomi: 着る も "to wear" ですよね。
Chris: Generally speaking, きる is used when talking about items of clothing worn on the upper body.
Naomi: シャツとか、ジャケットとか、セーターとか。
Chris: whereas haku covers the items worn on the lower body, such as pants or shoes.
Naomi: だから、ジャケットを着る "to wear a jacket"。でも、ジーンズを履く “to wear jeans"。
じゃ、アクセサリーは? How about accessories?
Chris: That would be する. Suru is used for accessories such as a necklace, tie, ring. bracelet and so on.
Naomi: ネックレスをする ”to wear a necklace"
じゃ、帽子は? What verb do you use with a hat or a cap?
Chris: That would be かぶる. Kaburu is like "to wear on the head or over the head"
Naomi: 帽子をかぶる “to wear a hat"
Chris: So we've learned 5 verbs meaning "to wear".
Naomi: 着る, 履く, する and かぶる。
Chris: OK. Let's recap with quizzes. Naomi's going to say a name of an item. Your job is to choose the verb used with the item. OK? Here we go.
Naomi: スカート "skirt"
Chris: ・・・Naomi-sensei, the answer is?
Naomi: はく。スカートをはく
Chris: OK. Let's do one more.
Naomi: ネクタイ “tie"
Chris: … the answer is?
Naomi: する。ネクタイをする
Chris: On to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn how to say "allow me to do..." in Japanese.
Naomi: 例えば、意見を聞かせてください。
Chris: “Please let me hear/have your opinion."
Naomi: とか、 写真をとらせてください。
Chris: “Please allow me to take a picture."
Chris: You can ask someone for permission using the causative form of a verb.
Naomi: 形は [ Te form of a causative form of a verb ] + kudasai
Chris: First of all, let's go over the formation.
Naomi-sensei, how do you say "to hear"?
Naomi: 聞く
Chris: The causative form is?
Naomi: 聞かせる
Chris: This means "to let someone listen". Now change that to te-from.
Naomi: 聞かせて
Chris: Add ください
Naomi: 聞かせてください。
Chris: "Please let me hear"
Naomi: 意見を聞かせてください。
Chris: "Please let me hear your opinion." Please repeat after Naomi."Please let me hear your opinion."
Naomi: 意見を聞かせてください。
Chris: Listeners, say "Please let me hear your opinion" in Japanese.
Naomi: 意見を聞かせてください。
Chris: Let's do one more. How do you say "to say"?
Naomi: いう
Chris: "to let someone say" or "to make someone say" is...
Naomi: 言わせる
Chris: So "Please let me say" is?
Naomi: 言わせてください。ダイアログには「ちょっと、言わせてください。」というフレーズがありましたね。
Chris: Right. In the dialogue, Kane said "Please let me say something."
OK. Please repeat after Naomi. "Please let me say something."
Naomi: ちょっと、言わせてください。
じゃ、復習しましょう。皆さんは、会社で働いています。上司に、来年から外国に行ってほしいと言われました。大きいチャンスです。でも、皆さんには、家族がいます。今、決められません。少し考えたいです。・・・・何といいますか?
Chris: Here's a situation. You work in an office. Your boss has told you that he wants you to go abroad next year. It's your big chance! But you have a family. You can't decide right now. You want to think about it for a little while. ... What do you say to your boss?
So, Naomi-sensei? What are we supposed to say?
Naomi: 考えさせてください。
Chris: Please let me think about it. 考える is "think". 考えさせる is "to let someone think". So
Naomi: 考えさせてください
Chris: is "Please let me think". Naomi-sensei, 日本人が「考えさせてください」というときは、Noという意味ですか?
Naomi: あ~。人によりますね。No の意味で「考えさせてください」と使う人もいます。
私はこういう使い方はしないで「本当に考えるから、時間がほしいです」という意味で使います。「ちょっと考えさせてください」。
Chris: あ、なるほど。でも、逆にちょっとNoは言わなくていいので、便利な表現ですよね。
Naomi: あぁ、そうですね。
Chris: So you can sort of passively say “No” without having to be directly rude to people. So there are some Japanese people who use 考えさせてください to actually mean "no" in regards to a request, but it depends on the person. Naomi-sensei said she only uses 考えさせてください when she actually wants more time to think about something.

Outro

Chris: OK. That's all for this lesson.
Naomi: じゃ、また
Chris: See you next time.
