ジャック・和樹: ありがとうございました。
ジャック: すごい、凝ってたね、あの人。
今度は英語が入ります。
和樹: ジャック、今日はどこ行きたい?
English: Jack, where do you want to go today?
ジャック: うーん、自然が多いところに連れて行ってくれない?
English: Hmm, will you take me someplace with lots of nature?
和樹: 分かった。じゃあ、高尾山に行こう!
English: Alright. Let’s go to Mt. Takao!
ジャック: いやー、高尾山は、空気がきれいだね。
English: Well well, the air on Mt. Takao is so nice.
: あっ、あれリスだ!!和樹、捕まえようぜ!
Oh look, it’s a squirrel! Let’s catch it Kazuki!
和樹: おっけー!
English: OK!
ジャック・和樹: やったー!捕まえた!(リスの鳴き声)
English: Alright! We got him! (squirrel yelps)
和樹: じゃあ、リスと一緒に記念写真を撮ろう。
English: Hey, let’s take a commemorative picture with the squirrel.
ジャック: すみませーん。写真を撮っていただけませんか。
English: Excuse me, would you take a picture for us?
通行人: 写らないので、もうちょっと、下がっていただけませんか。
English: I’m not quite getting you. Would you take a step back?
: あ・・・もうちょっと右ですね。
Uh… A little to the right.
: もう、一歩、右に動いていただけませんか。
Ok, could you take one more step to the right?
: 少し、リスを下げて・・・。そう。そうです。
And can you hold the squirrel a little bit lower? Yes, yes that’s it!
: じゃ、撮りますよぉ。はい、チーズ。
Okay, say cheese!
ジャック・和樹: ありがとうございました。
English: Thank you!
ジャック: すごい、凝ってたね、あの人。
English: Wow, that guy was really particular about his camerawork.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい、今日は、高尾山での話でしたね。昔、美樹さんのオーディオブログで高尾山の話があったので、この話を書いてみました。
Jessi: A long time ago, Mt. Takao was the topic of one of Miki's Blogs.
Yuichi: ジェシーさんは高尾山知っていますか。
Jessi: はい、知っています。行ったことないんですけど、知っています。
Yuichi: 有名ですね。
Jessi: はい。
Naomi: 結構面白いところですよ、高尾山。
Jessi: へー、何ができるんですか。
Naomi: 山を登ります(笑)
Yuichi: あと、ロープウェイもあるので、登らなくてもいいです。
Naomi: 高尾山は東京の中ですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。東京にあります。
Naomi: なので、すごく近くて、綺麗でいいですよ。お勧めです。
Jessi: So Naomi recommends Mt. Takao because it’s in Tokyo. So it is pretty close and easy to get to and it’s really beautiful.
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: 僕、実はあのー、よく写真とっていただけませんか。って聞かれるんですよね。
Jessi: Yuichi says he's often asked by others to take their picture for them.
Naomi: だって、優しいそうだから、頼みやすいですね。
Jessi: Because you look so nice.
Yuichi: ま、じゃあいいことですね。
Naomi: いいことですね。それから、「はい、チーズ」ですが、ジェシーさんは写真を撮るときに何て言います?
Jessi: In English? Umm...Say CheeseとかSmileとか、かな。
Yuichi: 時々日本人は、「1+1は」って言いますよね。
Jessi: One plus one equals….
Yuichi: 2(にー)
Naomi&Jessi: (laughing)
Jessi: Oh, okay. So when you say 2(に)which off course means 2 in Japanese, it looks like you’re smiling.
Yuichi: そうですね。あと、「はい、キムチ」とか。
Jessi: Huh? Say キムチ? キムチ the korean vegetable dish, right ?
Yuichi: はい。だから韓国の人は使うと思いますよ。
Jessi: So Yuichi thinks Korean people might use this phrase.
Naomi: 面白いですよね。でも私、「ウイスキー」って言う風にいう人がいるって聞いたことがあります。
Yuichi: なるほど。あのー、ウイスキー、大好き...あれっ?
Naomi: えっ、写真を撮るときに?
Yuichi: いや、違います。それ、あのー、日本のコメディアンが言ってますね。
Jessi: 私、知らないですけど。(笑)
Yuichi: と言うわけで、みなさんの国では、写真を撮るときに、何て言いますか?
Jessi: So when you take a picture, what do you say? OK.
Onto the Vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 空気 (air)
Naomi: 最近、「空気が読めない」ってことばが流行しましたよね。
Jessi: It's a kind of difficult phrase to translate. It literally means "can't read the air?" Does it mean something "can't sense the atmosphere"?
Naomi: Right.
Yuichi: そう、そんな感じですね。例えば、すごい静かな部屋にいて、みんな話していません。だけど、そこでひとりだけ、ペチャクチャうるさく話している人。そんな人は、「空気が読めない人」ですね。
Jessi: For example, in a quiet room where nobody is talking, only one person is talking in a really loud voice. That's 空気が読めない人。
Naomi: 二年くらい前に、「KY」って言うアルファベットが、流行語大賞に選ばれましたね。。空気が・読めないの「く」の「K」と「よめない」の「Y」何でしょうね。
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: So in Japan, they have a contest which decides the most popular or fashionable words of the year. And KY was nominated as one of the buzzwords. K stands for 空気が, and Y stands for 読めない.
Yuichi: 例えば、あの人は、KYだよね。とか使います。
Jessi: So for example, That person is KY.(He can't sense the atmosphere.)
Naomi: でもね、これ、すごく、あのー、何て言うのかな。きつい表現ですよね。
Yuichi: そうそう。
Jessi: Ah, so it’s a little hush, right?
Yuichi: 言われたら、ショックです。(笑)
Jessi: So be careful who you say to.
Naomi: そうね。祐一さんってKYだよね。
Yuichi: もちろんショックですね。
Naomi: って、言われたら。(一同笑)
Yuichi: 気を付けてください。
Jessi: Next, let’s compare the verb that appears in the dialog.
Naomi: そうですね。下げる and 下がる
Jessi: The first verb is
Yuichi: 下げる
Jessi: Sageru is known as a transitive verb which describes activities where someone acts on an object. For example, I lower the temperature air conditioner.
.Yuichi: 僕はエアコンの温度を下げる。
Jessi: What’s the second verb?
Yuichi: 下がる
Jessi: To step back to move down. 下がる is known as an intransitive verb which describes automatic changes where there is no object. For example, the temperature goes down.
Yuichi: 温度が下がる。
Jessi: The thing which goes down is marked by the particle が.
Naomi: 最近こんなフレーズよく聞きますよね。「株が下がった」
Jessie: The stock went down.
Naomi: 次は文法です。
Jessi: Let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Jessi: Today's grammar point is "-te form of a verb + itadakemasen ka?" expressing a polite request, "Could you ~?" When you'd like to make a polite request to someone like a stranger or a non peer, this expression is the best one to use. So ていただけませんか is this lesson’s target grammar point. Let’s break down the sentence.
Yuichi: 写真(photo) を( object marking particle) 撮って(-te form of a verb 撮る to take) いただけませんか
Jessi: いただく is the honorific expression of もらう So ていただけませんか is the honor of objective of てもらえない that we cover in the previous lesson. The politeness level is very different. Let’s give you one more example.Let’s say you want to ask your friend to hurry up. To hurry is 「急ぐ」. Will you hurry?
Naomi: ごめん、急いでもらえない?
Jessi: But when you want a shop clerk, to hurry up, you would probably say
Naomi: すみません、急いで頂けませんか?
Jessi: We’ve covered request phrases of various levels in lessons 5 to 8. And lesson 5 we covered をください.
Yuichi: お急ぎください。
Jessi: And lesson 6 we covered てくれない.
Yuichi: 急いでくれない?
Jessi: Lesson 7 we covered てもらえない.
Yuichi: 急いでもらえない?
Jessi: And this lesson we covered ていただけませんか.
Yuichi: 急いで頂けませんか?
Naomi: PDFを読んで、ご確認くださいね。
Yuichi: それではまた。
Jessi: See you next time.
