Peter: And they decided that they would take a day trip to Hakone.
Yuichi: 加奈子さんはトオルさんも誘いたいようです。

Naomi: 今日の文法は、「~と、思っている」。
Peter: I am thinking about.
Yuichi: じゃあ、聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
KANAKO: I'm thinking about going to a hot spring in Hakone for summer vacation. Why don't we go together?
トオル: 箱根かぁ!いいね。行く、行く!
TORU: Oh, Hakone! That's great. I'd love to!
加奈子: よかったぁ。困ってたんだ。助かったわ。
KANAKO: Oh, that's great. I was worried. You saved me.
トオル: えっ、どういう意味?
TORU: What do you mean?
加奈子: ジョンも一緒に行くんだけど、彼に温泉の入り方を教えて欲しいんだ。
KANAKO: John is also coming with us. I want you to teach him what to do with a hot spring.
トオル: ふーん、そのために、僕を誘ったんだ。
TORU: I was asked for that purpose?
加奈子: そのためだけじゃないよ。勘違いしないでよ。
KANAKO: It's not only for that. Don't get me wrong.
トオル: ふん。まぁ、いいよ。
TORU: OK. That's good.
加奈子:おいしいものをたくさん食べて、温泉に入って、楽しもうね!
KANAKO: Let's eat lots of delicious food and enjoy the hot springs.
加奈子:じゃ、また連絡するね!じゃぁね。バイバーイ。
KANAKO: I'll get in touch with you later. See you. Bye.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Yuichi-san
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: この3人で温泉行くことはどう思いますか?
Yuichi: 加奈子さんは女で、男2人ってことですよね。
Peter: So it’s one girl and two guys going to Hakone.
Yuichi: And Hot Springs Onsen.
Peter: Yeah.
Yuichi: ちょっとおかしいですよね。
Naomi: Actually I don’t like this girl. 変じゃない?この子ちょっと。 So she is so selfish. 自分勝手ですよ、すごく。
Peter: Ah そういうわけ、男が好きです。
Naomi: あ、そうそう。なんでだろうね、男の人って何で自分勝手な女の人が好きなんですか?
Peter: So I said that’s why I like – the guys like her and Naomi wants to know why do guys like girls who just aren’t themselves.
Naomi: そう…。 She is so selfish. Such a – yeah.
Peter: なんででしょうね。
Naomi: When トオル picks up the phone, she started the conversation and she ends the conversation and said じゃあね、 bye. That’s so rude…
Yuichi: Ah selfish.
Peter: しかし、携帯時代なんですから、誰が電話しているかわかってるんじゃないですか。 Like it’s the cellphone era. So you know who is calling. So it’s not like you are picking up the phone and just blindly saying…
Naomi: え、でも、例えば元気?とか、あ、もしもし、とか、何か…。
Yuichi: そうですね、ちょっと。
Naomi: 挨拶。欲しいよね。
Yuichi: 挨拶が欲しいですね。
Naomi: I think at least she should have put some greetings before she sets for the summer plan.
Peter: そうかなあ、 Really? like でも、すごい
Naomi: え?だってさあ、ねえピーター、明日さあっていきなり言われたらびっくりしない? If I start the conversation right after you answer the phone, you wouldn’t be surprised?
Peter: もし、ものすごくいい友達だったら今の関係と違って、もしすごくいい友達だったら平気じゃないですか? If we are really good friends, I think it’s okay. Like some… たまに、親友から電話かけてくると、なんだ、
Naomi: うん。家族とかね。
Peter: という挨拶、します。 So like sometimes…
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: まあ、 How do you say that in Japanese?
Naomi: 好みはそれぞれ。
Peter: そう、好みはそれぞれですね。
Naomi: こういう女の子好きですか、ゆうちゃん?
Peter: Yeah やっぱり。
Yuichi: ええと、いや、これはちょっと苦手です。 I don’t like this kind of girl.
Peter: あのさあ、夏休みにさあ、「さあ」が足りないんじゃないですか。
Yuichi: いや、そういう・・・。It doesn’t matter.
Naomi: うーん、まあ、ピーターが変なことを言いだす前にボキャブラリーを見ていきましょう。
Peter: Yes okay. So let’s have a closer look at some of the vocabulary and phrases we covered in this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、助かる
Peter: To be saved, to be helped. So this is the intransitive.
Yuichi: 助ける
Peter: To save, transitive.
Yuichi: なので、トオルは加奈子を助けた。
Peter: Toru saved Kanako and here we notice, we have the object marking particle O because this is transitive action from one thing to another. So we use 助ける
Yuichi: 加奈子は助かった。
Peter: Kanako was saved. So here there is no object.
Naomi: これを、助けるのpassiveを使って、加奈子は助けられた。
Peter: And finally just when you think you understand, here is the passive. So 加奈子は助けられた。 Kanako was saved and in this grammatical structure, usually the person doing the saving is marked by ne, the indirect object and who was that in this case?
Yuichi: トオル
Peter: So the whole thing sounds like
Yuichi: トオルに加奈子は助けられた。
Peter: So we basically have three different ways to say that. Kanako was saved by Toru.
Naomi: 助かるのときは、 by who が入れられないんですよね。
Peter: So we can’t say who she was saved by when we are using the intransitive 助かる and in Japanese, this transitive, intransitive pair verbs like these, the pair verbs like these, there are quite a few but we will slowly go through them.
Naomi: 次の単語は、勘違い
Peter: Misunderstanding, wrong guess.
Naomi: 「勘」というのは、
Peter: Instinct, guess.
Naomi: 「違い」
Peter: Different, wrong.
Naomi: 例えば、「この漢字よく読めたね」、「勘ですよ」なんていうふうに使ったりもしますね。
Peter: Wow! You read that kanji. That’s great that kind of nuance in there and the response is umm I just guessed.
Naomi: で、勘違いする is the verb.
Peter: To guess.
Naomi: 今日のダイアログでは、
Yuichi: 勘違いしないで
Peter: Don’t misunderstand. Umm, that's a very useful phrase.
Naomi: 勘違いしないで、ピーターはよく使えるかもしれないですね。
Yuichi: え、勘違いされるんですか?
Peter: 毎日。 every day.
Yuichi: ああ、毎日勘違いされているんですね。
Peter: よく言うね、ゆういち。
Naomi: 次の単語は、「欲しい」。
Peter: Want.
Naomi: noun が欲しい。 I want something. I want the noun でも、 verb が来るときがあるんですよね。verb の、 te form て欲しい。 I want somebody to do something.
Peter: ああ、難しくなってきましたね。
Naomi: 例えば、
Peter: Got a little difficult.
Naomi: 聞いて欲しい。
Peter: I want you to listen.
Naomi: 見る、だったら
Yuichi: 見て欲しい。
Peter: Want you to see.
Naomi: 教える、だったら
Yuichi: 教えて欲しい。
Peter: Want you to teach.
Naomi: 今日のダイアログには、
Yuichi: 彼に温泉の入り方を教えて欲しい。
Peter: I want you to teach him how to get into the Hot Spring.
Naomi: 温泉の入り方は、 How to take a hot spring bath.
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: 教えてほしいは、 I want you to teach ですよね。で、彼にですから to him.
Peter: 難しいですね。We have them altogether. So just to recap quickly,欲しい is usually paired with the subject marker ga and here then, it actually acts as an object marker to mark the noun that subject wants.
Naomi: そうですね、私はお金が欲しい。
Peter: I want money. So you are talking about a noun there. So let’s leave that out for a second. Then when you are talking about something you want, you use the auxiliary adjective たい。
Naomi: 日本食が食べたい。
Peter: I want to eat Japanese. So in both cases, we are talking about the subject, the subject want, a noun, the subject wants to do something. て欲しい is when you are talking about the second or third person. When you want them to do an action is when you use て欲しい.最初、けっこう大変でした。 When I tried to understand this, it’s て欲しい. When you want the second, the listener to do something. The second person or third person and in the example you gave Naomi Sensei, it was the third person who was marked by the….
Naomi: Ne.
Peter: So when you want the second person or a third person to do something, that’s when you use て欲しい but you should only use this in case when you are very kind of on good terms. Otherwise you should use a different format.
Naomi: 英語の want と日本語の欲しい、とかしたい、というのは一緒じゃないんですよね。
Peter: So て欲しい is for informal situations when everybody is very close and you want somebody to do something. ナオミ、これを食べて欲しい。 I want you to eat this. Okay let’s take a look at today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Peter: Naomi Sensei, what are we covering today?
Naomi: と、思っている。
Peter: I am thinking. The subject is thinking and in today’s conversation, we pair this with the previous lesson, the plain volitional. The plain volitional plus と、思っている。 which combines to mean, I am thinking of doing something. So for example
Naomi: 食べようと思っている。
Peter: I am thinking that I am going to eat.
Naomi: 例えば、今夜カレーを食べようと思っている。
Peter: I think I am going to eat curry tonight. Let’s start with a verb to eat and let’s just go through the evolution.
Naomi: 食べる。
Peter: I will eat.
Naomi: 私は、食べる。
Peter: I think I will eat.
Naomi: 私は、食べると思う。
Peter: I think I am going to eat something, something.
Naomi: 私は、食べようと思っている。
Peter: And this one has the most certainty out of the previous ones and usually there is something in there. For example, we use curry. So Naomi Sensei, how would I say I think I am going to eat curry tonight?
Naomi: 私は、今夜カレーを食べようと思っている。
Peter: So I think I am going to eat curry tonight and this one has the highest likelihood. You are contemplating the plan of how to execute it. Not definite but likely.
Naomi: Or your desire.

Outro

Peter: That’s going to do for today.
