Naomi: ナオミです。
Yuichi: ユウイチです。
Peter: Peter here. Passive voice part 2. Learn To Speak Japanese Naturally.
Naomi: 今日のレッスンは、典型的なガールズトークですね。 It’s a typical girl talk 今日の会話を説明してください。
Yuichi: はい。この会話は前回までの続きです。
Peter: The story is a continuation of the previous lesson.
Yuichi: リカさんとアカリさんの会話です。梨花さんはケンジ君が好きみたいですね。
Peter: This conversation is between two female speakers, 梨花 and アカリ. It seems like リカ likes Kenji.
Naomi: ケンジ君というのは彼女がいるんですが、先々週のレッスンで、夜遅く帰って彼女と喧嘩をしてましたよね。
Peter: So Kenji has a girlfriend but he came back really late last night and he argued with his girlfriend.
Yuichi: 今日の文法は、受け身です。
Peter: In this lesson, we are also focusing on the passive voice.
Naomi: では、ストーリーを聞いてください。
DIALOGUE
AKARI: Hey, Rika. You have something going on today? You look really cute.
梨花: ・・・実は、今日、ケンジ君とお出掛けなの。
RIKA: Actually...I'm going out with Kenji today.
あかり: 梨花、とうとう、ケンジ君をデートに誘ったの?
AKARI: Rika, you finally asked Kenji out on a date?
梨花: ううん。私が、ケンジ君に誘われたんだ。 「明日、ちょっと、買い物付き合って」って。
RIKA: No. Kenji asked me on a date. Hey said "come shopping with me tomorrow."
あかり: へぇ。。でも、どうするの? この間、部長が梨花に取引先の人を紹介するって言ってたじゃない。
AKARI: Ooh. But, what are you going to do? The other day, the boss said he was going to introduce you to a client.
梨花: う...ん。そうなんだよね。先週、部長に取引先の人を紹介されたんだ。それでその後、課長に別の取引先の人を紹介されたんだ。どっちの人とも何度か食事に行ってるんだけど、今は様子を見ているかんじかな。
RIKA: Ummm, that's right. Last week, the boss introduced me to one of our clients. Then after that, the section chief introduced me to another client. I've had dinner several times with each guy, but for now, I guess I'm just playing the field.
あかり: へぇー。もてるねぇ。
AKARI: Hmm, you're a big hit with the guys, huh?
梨花: ねえ、ビックリじゃない?先月、元彼に振られてから、モテモテなのよね。
RIKA: Surprising, isn't it? After my ex dumped me last month, I've become pretty popular with the guys.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 梨花さんモテモテですね。 She is just like Yuichi.
Peter: She has it going on.
Naomi: ねえ。ね、ユウイチさん。
Yuichi: いや、そんなことないですね。
Peter: いや、そんなことあるでしょ?
Naomi: ねえ。
Yuichi: いやいやいやいや。
Naomi: あの、お二人は「思い思われ振り振られ」っていうフレーズ知ってますか?
Peter: ちょっとわかんないです。
Naomi: 知ってる?
Yuichi: 聞いたことはあります。
Naomi: もしニキビがおでこにできたら思ってるんです。 You are thinking about somebody.
Peter: So if you have a pimple on your forehead, you are thinking about somebody.
Naomi: もしニキビが顎にあったら、思われてるんです。
Peter: So if you have a pimple on your chin, somebody is thinking about you.
Naomi: で、もし右の頬の上にニキビがあったら、振るんです。
Peter: And if you have a pimple on your right cheek, you are going to dump somebody.
Naomi: で、左にニキビがあったら、振られるんです。
Peter: And on the left side, you are going to get dumped.
Naomi: そうそうそう。知らない?
Yuichi: 知らなかったです。
Naomi: うそ。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: 女性だけですか?
Naomi: いや、みんな。という風なこと聞いたことあるんですけど、ないですか?
Yuichi: ないですね。
Naomi: へー。
Peter: でも、受け身の立場から非常に面白いです。
Naomi: To learn the passive voice, it’s good practice.
Peter: So a pimple on the forehead is
Yuichi: 思い
Peter: On the chin is
Yuichi: 思われ
Peter: そう、思われ。 passive. Then the right side
Yuichi: 振り
Peter: To dump.
Naomi: That’s from a verb 振る
Peter: Left side
Yuichi: 振られ
Peter: Passive 面白いです。使ってみます。
Naomi: うん。じゃあ、今日の単語に入っていきましょう。
Peter: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Yuichi Sensei 最初の言葉は
Yuichi: 格好
Peter: Figure, appearance, look.
Yuichi: 格好が良い
Peter: Cool.
Yuichi: 格好が悪い
Peter: Look bad.
Naomi: 格好がカッコになったりもしますよね。
Peter: So a lot of times 格好 the long vowel is shortened. So you just get
Naomi: カッコ You can use 格好が良い and 格好が悪い for appearance but you can also use them for one’s attitude.
Peter: そうですね。難しいですね。私とナオミ先生は、ユウイチよりちょっと年上ですね。
Naomi: ちょっとだけね。
Peter: ちょっと。
Naomi: Just a little bit.
Peter: Just a little bit. So we are a little older than Yuichi Sensei 私は最初日本語を勉強したときに、「かっちょええ」という言葉あったんですけど、
Naomi: 古い!
Peter: でしょ?でも、 It’s old I know but ユウイチ先生に、最近何流行ってるか聞きたいです。 So Yuichi, what’s new?
Yuichi: かっけー。
Peter: かっけー。
Naomi: 「いい」が「ええ」になって、「かっけー」になってるんですね。
Peter: かっけー。
Naomi: 男の人、使いますね。
Yuichi: そうですね。かっちょええはもう使わないですね。
Peter: そのぐらい知っていますけど!
Naomi: Okay. The next word is お出かけ
Peter: To step out, outing.
Naomi: This word comes from the verb 出かける To go out. お出かけ sounds like you are going out somewhere nice.
Yuichi: お出かけですか?
Peter: Are you going out?
Naomi: そうですね。ユウイチさん、なんかかっこいいですけど、今日格好が。お出かけですか?
Yuichi: いいえ、違います。
Naomi: はい、サンプルセンテンスでした。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: 次、お願いします。
Yuichi: 付き合う
Peter: To go out with, to get along with and this is also used to say, I am seeing where I am going out with.
Naomi: でも、その時は
Yuichi: 誰々と付き合っています。
Peter: So I am going out with this person. So when you want to say like going out with somebody, it’s usually in the present progressive.
Naomi: Right.
Peter: ていいます。
Naomi: はい。 But in today’s dialogue, 付き合う is not used in a romantic sense right?
Peter: So 梨花 said.
Naomi: 買い物付き合って。
Peter: Please come shopping with me.
Naomi: So 付き合う also means come along with somebody.
Peter: そうですね。部長あるいは課長がよく使う言葉ですね。
Naomi: そうですね、例えば
Yuichi: 一杯付き合ってください。
Peter: Come with me to have a drink.
Naomi: 次の言葉は、取引先
Peter: Client, business partner.
Naomi: 簡単に言うと、お客さんですね。取引 means deal, trading. 先っていうのは、
Peter: Partner, counterpart.
Yuichi: 次の単語は、振る
Peter: To dump, to ditch, to reject.
Naomi: ユウイチさん、この前デートした女の子、どうしたの?
Yuichi: ああ、振りました。
Peter: So Yuichi, what happened to the girl you went out with the other day?
Yuichi: ああ、振りました。
Peter: Ah! I dumped her.
Yuichi: フィクションですからね。 It's a friction.
Naomi: モテモテですね。
Peter: 振られましたということじゃないですか? Like 受け身じゃなかったですか?
Yuichi: いや、どっちでもないんですけど、まあ振りました。 active ですね。はい。
Naomi: いやあ、モテモテですね。
Peter: 自信は満々ですね。 Naomi Sensei, モテモテって it means popular among the opposite sex.
Naomi: そうですね。例えば、ユウイチさんはモテモテです。
Peter: So Yuichi is popular among the girls.
Naomi: I think モテモテ is from a verb もてる
Peter: So to have something.
Naomi: そうですね。もてる also has the meaning to be liked by opposite sex.
Peter: 写真載せないと皆わからないと思いますが、 If we don’t have a picture of Yuichi Sensei, I don’t think everyone will realize but 本当に格好いいですね。
Naomi: あのー、ユウイチ君が今首を振っています。
Yuichi: はい。
Peter: どういう意味ですか?
Naomi: 振るというのは、 To dump もあるんですが、 to shake というのもあります。 so ユウイチ君は首を振っています。
Peter: Shaking one’s head.
Naomi: そうですね。
Peter: しかし、 You can shake your head up and down こういう場合必ずいいえという意味ですか?
Naomi: We add 横に and 縦に to vertically and horizontally ユウイチさんは首を横に振っていました。
Peter: So he is shaking his head sideways symbolizing no. He doesn’t agree.
Yuichi: そうです。
Naomi: 次は、文法です。

Lesson focus

Peter: Okay today’s grammar point is the passive structure. Naomi Sensei 受け身ですね。
Naomi: はい。
Peter: Now when someone receives an action, this is the passive of somebody receiving an action and I think the best way to exemplify this is by looking at an example. Now first we are going to need to look at the active tense. Now if you remember in the active tense, there is movement from the subject to the object. So let’s take a look at our example sentence.
Naomi: 部長が私に取引先の人を紹介した。
Peter: The manager introduced a client to me. So the verb form in this sentence tells us that this is an active sentence. What’s that?
Naomi: 紹介した
Peter: Let’s take a look where the particles fall in the sentence. One more time?
Naomi: 部長が
Peter: So subject marked by ga.
Naomi: 私に
Peter: Receiver marked by ne.
Naomi: 取引先の人を
Peter: The object introduced.
Naomi: 紹介した。
Peter: And the verb in the active form. So again it’s important here. The receiver in this sentence and the active sentence is marked by ne and a giver by ga. Now let’s take a look at the passive sentence. Yuichi Sensei?
Yuichi: 私は部長に取引先の人を紹介された。
Peter: The sentence is very similar but there are a couple of key differences. Now remember, in the previous sentence, the receiver 私 was marked by ne. In this sentence?
Yuichi: 私は
Peter: It’s marked by the topic marking particle va. The giver in the previous sentence was marked by
Yuichi: 部長が
Peter: In this sentence, in the passive, the giver is marked by
Yuichi: 部長に
Peter: The particle ne. So think of ne in the passive as by. Then the object stays the same.
Yuichi: 取引先の人を
Peter: And finally the verb form changes.
Yuichi: 紹介された。
Peter: Let’s have a look at some examples.
Naomi: 私はよく英語を話すときに、間違えるんですけど、そのときにピーターは日本語を直してくれます。
Peter: So I always make mistakes when I speak English. Peter always corrects me and in that case?
Yuichi: ピーターはナオミに英語を教える。
Peter: So Peter teaches Naomi English. The receiver of this action is Naomi. So you can start the sentence with
Naomi: ナオミ
Yuichi: ナオミはピーターに英語を教えられる。
Peter: Same pattern as before. Passive verb.
Yuichi: 教えられる
Peter: The receiver is marked by va and the giver is marked by ne.
Naomi: もてもてのユウイチさんは、バレンタインデーにはチョコレートをもらうんですよね。
Peter: So I bet Yuichi gets a lot of chocolate on Valentine’s Day.
Naomi: 女の子はユウイチにチョコレートを贈る。
Peter: Girls send Yuichi chocolate. The receiver of course is Yuichi. So
Naomi: ユウイチは女の子にチョコレートを贈られる。
Yuichi: 贈られません。はい。

Outro

Naomi: PDFで細かい説明を読んでおいて下さい。
Peter: All right. That’s going to do for today.
Naomi: じゃあ、また。
Yuichi: さようなら。
