KUMI: Hey!
ケンジ: は、はい。
KENJI: Y- yeah?
クミ: 連絡もせずに、今までどこに行ってたの。
KUMI: I haven't heard a word from you all night. Where were you?
ケンジ: 会社の送別会があったんだ。同僚とカラオケに行って、そのあと、クラブに行って。
KENJI: There was a going away party at work. I went with my coworkers to karaoke, then to a club.
クミ: 今、何時か知ってる?
KUMI: Do you know what time it is?
ケンジ: さぁ…。4時くらい・・・ですか・・・ね?
KENJI: Umm…4…in the morning?
クミ: ほう。電話にもメールにも気づかずに、遊んでいたんだ?

KENJI: Yeah, he didn't come to the club…
ケンジ: なんだよ、その顔。俺を信用できないのか?!
KENJI: why are you making that face? You don't believe me?!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: あの、よくある話ですよね。 It often happens right? 何、何? No reaction, no comment.
Peter: あの、だれと話していますか? Who are you talking to?
Naomi: You, Peter and Yuichi. Can you relate to ケンジ?
Yuichi: 僕はわからないので、やっぱりピーターさんに教えてほしいですね。
Naomi: 大先輩のね。
Yuichi: はい。教えてください、ピーターさん。
Peter: So you can’t really relate. So you are passing it over to me.
Naomi: そう。じゃあまず最初の質問は、よくある話ですか? Does it often happen?
Peter: 私の場合、たまにですね。
Naomi: たまに。
Peter: たまにです。
Yuichi: ときどき。
Peter: It sometimes happens, but 年に1回、2回ぐらいですね。
Naomi: へえ。なるほど。
Yuichi: じゃあよくあるわけじゃないんですね。
Peter: よくではないですね。
Yuichi: Not often but sometimes.
Peter: Exactly. そうですね。しかし、あったら大変なことになります。
Naomi: どんな風に大変なんですか? Like how?
Peter: やっぱり、クミちゃんの反応が見たことあるということですね。 So I can – I have seen that reaction from Kumi before.
Naomi: ああ、そうなんだ。 I thought your wife was listening to this show. Is that okay?
Peter: 大丈夫です。
Naomi: あ、本当?
Peter: かな?でも、もし私が連絡すると問題ないです。
Naomi: You wouldn’t have any problem as long as you call her or email her.
Peter: Right.
Naomi: Beforehand.
Peter: しかし、
Naomi: しないもんね、ピーターね。
Peter: まあ、たまにですね。
Naomi: ふーん。
Yuichi: なるほど。
Naomi: ユウイチさん、勉強になりました?
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: よく勉強、
Yuichi: 勉強になりました。
Naomi: 勉強になんないよね、こんなの。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: So let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: The first word is 送別会
Peter: Farewell party.
Naomi: Welcome party is 歓迎会ですね。で、送別会と歓迎会を一緒にするときは歓送迎会
Peter: So if you are having a farewell party and a welcome party at the same time, the party would be called
Naomi: 歓送迎会
Peter: たまにありますね。
Naomi: 私たちはよく、 We often have this party right?
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: いつも飲んでいます。
Yuichi: 次は、同僚
Peter: Colleague.
Yuichi: 同じ会社で働いている人です。
Peter: Now…
Yuichi: 同僚
Peter: Is usually used for people who are about the same age and have the same kind of position. So you wouldn’t call your boss or your subordinate 同僚 .
Naomi: そうですね、
Yuichi: 言わないです。
Naomi: 同期という言葉もあります。 Have you ever heard that word dokie?
Peter: That’s an event where the people who enter the company the same year or gather together.
Naomi: そうですね。同じ年に入った人、同じ頃に会社に入った人を同期って言います。次は、クラブ
Peter: Nightclub.
Naomi: ピッチアクセント、気を付けてください。 Watch the pitch accent クラブ is
Peter: Club. So for a nightspot, the pitch starts low and goes up at the second syllable ラ. It starts high and goes down at the second syllable ラ.
Yuichi: 同僚とクラブに行きました。
Peter: I went to a nightspot with my colleague. え、どう違いますか? What’s the difference?
Naomi: クラブ is school club and クラブ is nightclub.
Peter: Got you.
Yuichi: 中学生が行くのはクラブですね。
Naomi: I hope so. 次の単語は、
Yuichi: 気づく
Peter: To notice, to realize.
Yuichi: 気がつく、も同じですね。次、お願いします。
Naomi: 別れる
Peter: To part, to divorce.
Naomi: The te form is 別れて. So the past tense is 別れた. In today’s dialogue.
Yuichi: 山田さんは12時にあなたと別れたって言ってたわよ。
Peter: 山田さん said that he left you at 12.
Naomi: それを聞いてケンジは怒って、 When Kumi said it, Kenji got angry and said.
Yuichi: 俺を信用できないのか?
Peter: You don’t believe me.
Naomi: 信用する is to trust. 信用できる is..
Peter: To be able to trust.
Naomi: So 信用できない
Peter: Not to be able to trust. Naomi Sensei, 男の人が俺を信頼できない?という言葉、言う時に、
Naomi: 信頼できないです。え、なんで? Like I can’t trust the people who says believe me or trust me じゃない?そんなことない?
Peter: ユウイチ先生は女性に言われたら?
Yuichi: 信じます。 I believe.
Naomi: なんだか私、悪者じゃない?

Lesson focus

Naomi: 今日の文法は、ずに As in 食べずに
Peter: The grammar point in today’s lesson is ずに which means without doing something or do not do something and something, something. The formation is
Naomi: Verb
Peter: Negative stem plus
Naomi: (slow)ずに
Peter: But please note that in the case of する meaning to do, the ずに is not しずに but rather

Yuichi: 連絡もせずに今までどこに行ってたの。
Peter: I haven’t heard a word from you all night, where were you?
Naomi: 形を見てみましょう。
Peter: Let’s take a look at the formation. Let’s take a verb. Naomi Sensei, お願いします。
Naomi: 買う
Peter: To buy. The negative plain form is
Naomi: 買わない
Peter: Now we are going to drop the ない and we have
Naomi: 買わ
Peter: To this we attach
Naomi: ずに、買わずに
Peter: Without buying and this ずに acts as a conjunctive combining two sentences. How about another verb?
Yuichi: 食べる
Peter: To eat. Plain negative form.
Yuichi: 食べない
Peter: Now we drop the ない and have
Yuichi: 食べ
Peter: To this we attach.
Yuichi: ずに
Peter: And we have
Yuichi: 食べずに
Peter: Without eating.

Yuichi: ピーターさんは、お昼を食べずに仕事をしていますよね。
Peter: So Peter works without eating lunch.
Naomi: そうそう、でもね、お菓子は食べてるみたいですよ。
Yuichi: そうですね、はい。
