Naomi: They are friends. So they speak casual Japanese.
Peter: Okay let’s have a listen to today’s conversation. Here we go.

Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
大河: ねぇねぇ。君達。今、暇?今からうちの店に来ない?
TAIGA: Hey girls, do you have time now? Do you want to come to our club now?
女達: 忙しいの。ごめんねぇ。
GIRLS: We're kind of busy. Sorry.
大河: (ちっ。舌打ち)だめだなぁ。今月、金ないから、お客連れて行きたいんだけどなぁ。
TAIGA: Dang, no luck. Since I don't have any money, I want to bring a customer into the club.
聖夜: 最近金使いすぎているから、積立用の口座をもう一つ作ったんだ。
SEIYA: Recently, I've just been spending too much, so I set up a second savings account.
毎月、2万円ずつ積み立てているんだ。
I put aside 20,000 yen every month.
大河: へぇー。感心感心。俺なんか月末にはいつもスッカラカンだよ。
TAIGA: Wow. I'm impressed. I'm always broke at the end of the month.
あ、ちょっと金をおろしたいから、ATM寄っていい?
Hey, can I stop by an ATM cuz I need to withdraw some money.
(ピピピ)
聖夜: え?大河、残高が2万円しかないの?給料日まであと2週間もあるよ。
SEIYA: Your balance is only 20,000 yen? We still have 2 more weeks until payday.
(ピピピ)
聖夜: え?全額おろすの?マジで?

聖夜: え?どうして。
SEIYA: Huh? Why?
大河: どうして?なぜなら、愛しているからじゃないの?俺のこと。
TAIGA: Why? Because she loves me!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: Naomi先生
Naomi: はい
Yuichi: Taigaさんの職業は何ですか?
Naomi: えーとね、ホストだと思います。
Peter: So it seems like Taiga is a host. Now a host, this word I became familiar with upon coming to Japan. It’s – they have a hostess bar where you go and you pay quite a lot of money to sit and talk with very pretty women.
Naomi: Pretty かどうかは、 Depends on bar and the price.
Peter: Yeah. Naomi Sensei きれいではないとこの営業がやりずらいですね。 It’s a little bit hard to do this business if you are not pretty or charming.
Yuichi: 話が上手な人もホステスになれます。 The women who are good at talking. They can be a good hostess.
Peter: The girls they work at a hostess bar. そうすると逆に、ホストというのは男Versionですね。 like the male version. So it’s a place for women to go and be pampered by guys そんな感じですね。
Naomi: はい。
Peter: 日本にはいっぱいありますね。
Naomi: いっぱいかどうかはわからないですけど、 I am not sure if it’s いっぱい、でもまぁありますね。
Peter: 少なくはないですね。でも Hostess bar と比べると少ないですね。
Naomi: そうかな、たぶん。そうですね。
Peter: So there are more hostess bars but there are more than a few host bars for women to go to.
Naomi: そうです、女の人が行きますね。
Peter: うん、そうすると、まぁ同じ形ですね。 Like the alcohol is expensive. The guys make the women feel very appreciative.
Naomi: そうです。で、Taigaさんはお客さんを探そうとしているんですよね。
Peter: そう、新しいお客さんですね。
Naomi: そうですね。 I think Taiga is trying to find a new customer on the street.
Peter: 話し方は、ちょっとですね。
Naomi: うーん、でもね、これ新宿歩いてるといますよ、女の人には話しかけてきます。
Peter: そうですね。でも、店に来ない?普段もうちょっと上手な、あるいは上品な言葉を使った方がいいんじゃないですか? Like he is using very casual Japanese and these places are very expensive. So you know one night at one of these places will be hundreds of dollars. So どうでしょうね。
Naomi: だから、スッカラカンなんじゃないですかね。 That’s why he is poor.
Peter: Yeah he needs 技術をちょっと身に付けないと。 like he needs to practice his skills a bit more.
Yuichi: そうですね。スッカラカン、ておもしろいですね。
Naomi: Like totally empty.
Peter: Totally empty as is the case in this conversation.
Naomi: だいたいお金のことを言いますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: I think スッカラカン is exclusively used for money. じゃ、単語に行きましょう。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yuichi: つみたてようのこうざ
Peter: Account for installment savings.
Yuichi: 積立 is a noun form of the verb 積み立てる to accumulate, to save, to reserve and 用 means for the use of or for and 口座 means account.
Naomi: 積立用の口座というのは、毎月少しずつお金をためていく口座のことです。
Peter: So it’s an account that you put a little bit of money into every month.
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: 貯金ですね。
Peter: いくら入れるか、それを決まってますか?
Naomi: それは、お客さんが決めます。The customer can decide で、普通、決まった期間おろすことができないです。
Peter: Ah okay. So you can put as much as you want in but you can’t withdraw any money for a certain period of time, for a decided period of time.
Naomi: そうですね。 And actually おかねをおろす is the next word.
Peter: To draw money from the bank. To make a withdrawal.
Yuichi: お金を引き出す is also okay.
Naomi: 「引き出す」というのは、前のLessonで出てきましたよね。 We’ve already introduced this word in the previous lesson.
Peter: To pull out 引き出す
Yuichi: And the opposite phrase is お金を預ける or 入金する
Peter: To deposit money.
Naomi: 次は、ふりこむ
Peter: To transfer money to banks, to pay money into someone’s account.
Naomi: The noun form is 振り込み and 送金 is also transfer money. Basically 振り込み and 送金 are the same. でも、銀行では普通、「振り込み」が使われます。「送金」は、他のところにお金を送ることも言うことができます。
Peter: そうですね。日本で国内でお金を送ると、振り込み
Naomi: From bank to bank 振り込み
Peter: それから、私がアメリカへお金を送る時に、送金て言われます。
Naomi: そうですね。and when you want to transfer some money to someone’s account, you probably have to fill out
Yuichi: ふりこみようし
Peter: Paper for bank transfer.
Naomi: The bank teller probably say
Yuichi: この振込用紙にご記入下さい。
Peter: Please fill out this bank wire form. え?聞いたことないです。
Naomi: なんで?
Peter: いつもATMで、お金を振り込んでますから、これを聞いたことないです。 So when you wire the money, when you send money from bank to bank using the ATM, you don’t have to fill any form.
Yuichi: You touch the panel.
Peter: Yeah a touch screen.
Naomi: 次の単語は
Yuichi: ざんだか
Peter: Balance, reminder.
Yuichi: 預金残高
Peter: Balance in the account, account balance.
Naomi: I think we’ve already mentioned that but 預金 and 貯金 have similar meanings. So you can say 貯金残高。次の単語は
Yuichi: 給料日
Peter: Payday.
Naomi: 給料が
Peter: Salary.
Naomi: 日が
Peter: Day.
Naomi: ですね。Salaryの日っていう感じですかね。
Peter: 日本ですと、だいたい25日ですね。
Naomi: 会社によりますよ。
Peter: しかし、25日に銀行が混んでますよ。
Naomi: そう
Peter: いつも混んでます。
Naomi: 25,26…23ぐらいから始まるんじゃないかな?23,24,25,26、この辺が給料日多いです。
Peter: So between the 23rd and the 26th, it’s quite common for companies to pay their salary. Of course, this depends on the company but on those days, the bank is always crowded. So 避けた方がいいと思います。.You should avoid going to the bank on those days.
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。行列がありますね。There is a long line in front of ATM.
Naomi: Or you could go to convenient store to draw money.
Peter: お金にルーズですね。
Naomi: なんで?
Peter: だって、それの方が高いでしょ?
Naomi: え、同じ同じ
Yuichi: 手数料がちょっと
Peter: There is – depending on the place, there is usually little bit of a extra surcharge.
Naomi: Umm but even if you draw money from the convenient store, if your bank has a business relationship with that convenient store, you don’t have to pay any extra money. 手数料無料の時もあります。
Peter: それはいいですね。
Naomi: たとえば、私は三井住友Bankですけれども、コンビニのampmのATMは無料です。
Peter: あ、そうですか?So your bank is?
Naomi: Mitsui Sumitomo
Peter: And if you have an account with them, you can withdraw money free at?
Naomi: AMPM.
Peter: そうですね。初めて日本に来た時に、コンビニのATMがなかったです。 When I first came to Japan, there were no ATMs at convenient stores.
Naomi: I bet it’s difficult to find a convenient store in Ibaraki.
Peter: ちょっと!なんかもうひどくなってきましたね。
Naomi: うそです。
Peter: 茨城のみなさん、申し訳ございません。私の同僚がちょっと失礼します。 I would like to apologize on behalf of my colleague for her incomprehensible words and comments towards…
Naomi: だから、うそって言ったじゃん。 うそです。

Lesson focus

Naomi: 今日の文法は、なんか、as in
Yuichi: 俺なんか月末にはいつもスッカラカンだよ。
Peter: なんか is a particle to give an example of something and implying a derogatory meaning. When you are using it about the speaker or a member of the speaker’s group, it expresses a sense of humbling oneself as in the example in this conversation which we just gave you and we will have it one more time. Yuichi Sensei お願いします。
Yuichi: 俺なんか月末にはいつもスッカラカンだよ。
Peter: I never have any money left at the end of the month.
Naomi: Negative feeling がある時にも使いますよね。私はうそなんか言いません。
Peter: Me, I don’t lie or say things like that. Okay we also have.
Naomi: ちょっと as in
Yuichi: ちょっとお金を下ろしたいから。
Peter: Here ちょっと is an adverb which expresses a casual way of doing something or doing something without any particular motive. So let’s take a look at the example in the conversation.
Yuichi: ちょっとお金を下ろしたいから、ATM寄っていい?
Peter: Can I stop by an ATM? I need to withdraw some money.
Naomi: たとえば、銀行に行ってきます。
Peter: I am going to the bank.
Naomi: これを、ちょっと銀行に行ってきます。
Peter: I am going to go to the bank for a bit.
Naomi: そうですね。英語のfor a bitと一緒な感じ。たとえば、時間ある?話があるんだけど。
Peter: Do you have time? I have something I want to talk about.
Naomi: これを
Yuichi: 時間ある?ちょっと話があるんだけど。
Peter: Do you have time? I have something I want to talk about quick.
Naomi: そんな感じです。
Peter: But I kind of use this one where it’s like – it’s something I want to take care of quick. ちょっとお金を下ろしてきます。 Like I want to go take care of that real quick.
Naomi: そう、時間がかからないようなニュアンスがあります。
Yuichi: そうですね。近くまでちょっと行ってきます、とか使いますね。

Outro

Peter: That’s going to do for today.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi: さよなら。
