INTRODUCTION
Naomi: Naomiです。
Yuichi: Yuichiです。
Peter: Peter here. Going on a Date, Part 3.
Naomi: ようやく終わりますね。 This is the final story.
Peter: Hmm. よかったですね。 Happy ending になるように望んでます。はい、 Today’s grammar point is
Naomi: こそ
Peter: A particle which emphasizes a word, phrase, or clause. In the previous lesson, the two went on a date. They went to the movies and then a restaurant in Roppongi it seems. So today, we are going to find out what happened.
Naomi: 女の子が友達にデートの話を報告してるみたいですよね。
Peter: So the woman that went on a date is recording to her friend what happened.
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: And the conversation will be in casual Japanese as there are two friends.
Naomi: じゃ、聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Naomi: 今度は英語が入ります。
ゆうこ: まぁ、映画はつまらなかったけど、いいデートだったのよぉ
YUUKO: So, the movie was boring but it was a good date.
まさみ: へぇ、、、、良いわね、、、、幸せそうね。。。
MASAMI: (uninterested because her own date was bad) I see... well, that's nice, you look happy.
ゆうこ: その後に行った、たかおさんお勧めのお店も雰囲気が良くてさ、
YUUKO: Also, the atmosphere at the restaurant that we went to after the movie was good.
料理もおいしいし、お酒もおいしかったし、最高のデートだったのよ。
The food and drinks were also good, so it was the perfect date.
まさみ: はいはい。。。それは良かったわね。。。
MASAMI: Yeah, yeah... that's good, huh...
ゆうこ: で、あなたの方はどうだったのよ?あなたもデートだったんでしょ?
YUUKO: So, tell me about your date? You had a date too, right?
まさみ: うん、、、はは、すごく楽しかったよ!六本木ヒルズの最上階のレストランで二人で食事してさ。いやー、眺め最高だったし、彼もかっこよかったし、あんな最高のデート初めてよ!
MASAMI: Yeah.... ha ha, (lying) I had a great time! We had dinner at a restaurant on the top floor of Roppongi Hills. The view was great and he was cool. It was the best date ever.
ゆうこ: そうなんだぁ!お互い楽しいデートが出来て良かったわ!
YUUKO: Really! I'm glad that we both had good dates!
まさみ: うん、そうね。。。。
MASAMI: Yeah, whatever…
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: はい、Naomi先生、どう思いましたか?
Naomi: うんと、あのー、特に感想はない
Peter: So you don’t really have any impression.
Naomi: うん。でも、六本木ヒルズの最上階はレストランではありません。
Yuichi: じゃ、うそをついていたってことですかね。
Naomi: 確かね、美術館です。森美術館
Peter: So there is no restaurant on the 53rd floor of the Roppongi tower.
Naomi: でも、52階が展望台で、51階にレストランがあります。
Peter: So there is a restaurant a couple of floors below it on the 51st floor.
Naomi: でも、レストランは全部会員制で
Peter: え?会員制ですか?So you can’t get into the restaurant unless you know somebody.
Naomi: で、会員になるのにいくらぐらいかかると思います?このレストラン
Yuichi: 1万円ぐらいですか?
Naomi: 100万円以上です。
Peter: まじですか?
Naomi: それが、入会金
Peter: So in order to get into one of these restaurants, you have to be a member and to be a member, it costs $10,000.
Naomi: Memberって言っても、レストランだけじゃなくて、 I think for whole like Mori building, の会員だと思います。入会費が100万以上で、月額が20万くらい
Peter: Sorry $10,000 upfront and 2000 a month. Exchange rate ¥100 to the dollar.
Naomi: おかしいですよね、これね。
Yuichi: 毎月20万円て、すごいですね。
Peter: 勉強になりました。すごいですね。
Naomi: でも、たぶんこれ、会社が会員になってるケースが多いんだそうです。
Peter: あー、お客さんのために
Naomi: たとえば、 movie star とかね。
Peter: はい、次行きましょう。 On to the vocabulary.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: ふんいき
Peter: Atmosphere, mood.
Naomi: これは、Yuichiさんは正直どういうふうに発音しますか?
Yuichi: ぼくは、ふいんき
Peter: 「ん」て聞こえませんね。
Naomi: Yuichiさんは、「ん」と「い」を逆に読んでるんです。本当は、「ふんいき」なんですが、Yuichiさんが言ってるのは、「ふいんき」。あのー、結構「ふいんき」って読む人いるんです。
Peter: Wow! So the proper pronunciation of this word atmosphere or mood is ふんいき with a んcoming after the ふ. Recently a lot of people switched the order and actually placed the い in the second position and the ん in the third position. So it comes out ふいんき
Naomi: It’s still considered as a mistake but there are other people who pronounce like that. 同じに聞こえるんだよね、日本人の耳には、ほぼ。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: そうですか?すばらしい雰囲気
Yuichi: 今どっち言ったんですか?
Naomi: そうわかんない
Peter: わからない
Yuichi: 誰もわからないじゃないですか。
Peter: でも、通じました。
Naomi: うん、そうそうそう。「雰囲気がいい」だと、The atmosphere is good. 「雰囲気が悪い」だと The atmosphere is bad.
Peter: And is there any other like expressions 「雰囲気」を使って他の表現ありますか?最高な雰囲気とか
Naomi: あー、まぁまぁ言いますね
Peter: すばらしい雰囲気、いい雰囲気
Naomi: いろいろ言うことができます。たとえば
Yuichi: この店は店員さんの態度が悪くて、雰囲気が悪い
Peter: The shop clerk’s attitude was bad and so was the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Naomi: 次の単語は
Yuichi: さいじょうかい
Peter: Top floor.
Yuichi: 最初の漢字は、 The most とか the best の意味ですね。
Naomi: 「もっとも」という意味ですよね。
Yuichi: 次が、「上」という漢字です。 Upper とか top ということですね。で、最後の漢字は、floor ですね。
Naomi: 最も上の階ということですね。
Yuichi: そうです。
Peter: Top floor.
Naomi: Sample sentence あるみたいですね。
Yuichi: いつかホテルの最上階のSuiteに泊まりたい。
Peter: Someday I’d like to stay at the suite room on the top floor of the hotel.
Naomi: そんな夢をYuichiさんが持ってるとは、知りませんでした。
Peter: がんばって下さい、Yuichi.
Naomi: がんばって。
Yuichi: はい、がんばります。
Naomi: みんなで遊びに行くから、Suiteに。
Peter: あの、Suiteなら眺めがいいですね。
Naomi: Oh! 次の単語ですね。ながめ
Peter: Scene, view.
Naomi: 最上階からのながめがよかった
Peter: The view from the top floor was great.
Naomi: 動詞だと The verb form is ながめる
Peter: To view.
Naomi: 次の単語は?
Yuichi: びじん
Peter: Beautiful person, beautiful lady.
Naomi: これ、男の人には使わないですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: We don’t usually use 美人 for men.
Peter: What do you use for guys?
Yuichi: びだんし
Peter: びだんし?
Naomi: Or びなんし
Peter: びなんし
Yuichi: The characters are same but the pronunciation sometimes changes. 美 means beautiful, 男子 is just guys.
Peter: Naomi先生、ちょっと質問したいんですが、Yuichiさんて美男子ですか?そこまでかな?
Naomi: I would say “cute”
Peter: かわいい、ということですね。
Naomi: うん
Peter: 残念ながら、美男子ではない
Naomi: 美男子ですよ、美男子ですよ
Yuichi: はい、わかりました。
Peter: You know it’s regrettable that we have to inform you, you are not a beautiful guy.
Naomi: でも美男子ってちょっと、なんだろうな、私のImageの美男子っていうのは、細くて高くて、Yuichiさんも細くて高くて、ちょっとなんか
Peter: 顔がだめです。
Yuichi: Hey.
Naomi: なんかSexyみたいな、そういう感じがあるんですけど。SexyみたいなImageが。
Yuichi: Yeah I am not sexy.
Peter: じゃ、Sexy じゃないということですね。
Yuichi: あ、じゃ、Peterさん、Naomiさんは、
Naomi: あ、これはやめときましょう。
Yuichi: 美女ですか?
Peter: 美女、ちょっと待って。はい、答え出ました。かわいいですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Peter: はい
Naomi: 美女っていうと、背が高くて細くて、そういう女の人のことですよね。
Peter: So, yeah, Like the beautiful girl much like the beautiful guys, tall, good looking.
Peter: でも、ふたりとも Modest, they are just being modest. I think you are both beautiful.
Naomi: あんまりうれしくない
Peter: 次行きましょう。
Naomi: 次は
Yuichi: おたがい
Peter: Each other.
Naomi: 「お互い」っていうのは、あなたと私っていう意味ですよね。
Peter: You and me, each other こういう表現聞いたことありますか?お互いを理解し合いましょう。 So it’s a guy’s expression like guys understand this because girls often say, let’s try to understand each other better ありますね。
Yuichi: ありますね。僕もPeterさんもお互い理解し合いましょう。あ、これそういう意味なんですか?Peter: 今、Naomi先生がわかってきました。Now Naomi Sensei understands well.
Yuichi: じゃ、俺わかんなくなった。わかんないわ。
Naomi: あとは、よく言うのは、おたがいさま、なんて言いませんか?
Yuichi: 様っていうのは
Naomi: Polite suffix.
Yuichi: そうですね。はい、そうですね。Peter さん、今日僕Script読んでないんですよ。ごめんなさい。
Peter: お互い様
Naomi: ちょっと待った?読んでないの?あたしが書いたのに?
Yuichi: ふたりとも読んでないときに、「お互い様」を使います。
Naomi: お互い様じゃないよ。来る前に読んでよ。
Peter: はい、わかりました、お母さん。 So お互い様 means the both of us kind of. So we both didn’t read the script.
Yuichi: Yes that’s our fault.
Peter: So you can use it to incorporate somebody else into kind of the same situation with same kind of thing you did into your group whether that be the group that didn’t read something or something along those lines.
Naomi: じゃ、今日の文法に入りましょう。

Lesson focus

Peter: Now for today’s grammar point, you are actually going to have to stop by japanesepod101.com and listen to the bonus track because today’s grammar point actually appears in the bonus track from the guys we are speaking.
Naomi: あ、そうだ。
Peter: Now today’s grammar point is
Naomi: こそ
Peter: Which is a particle that emphasizes a word, phrase or clause. Now in today’s dialogue, at first Takao is talking about his date and afterwards he asks Masashi about what’s he going to do on his side. Now by using お前の方こそ you is emphasized as opposed to me and he can express that aside from his own story, he wants to know about you. Now that I am done reading that, let’s give you a more informal explanation of what this all meant. We are going to take a look at a line from the guy’s conversation. お願いします。
Yuichi: お前の方こそどうだったんだよ。
Peter: What’s going on with you? So お前 is a very, very informal way to refer to you. You could be referring to a guy or a girl but it’s mainly used by guys.
Yuichi: Yes.
Peter: Guy’s word but it can refer to a male or a female. That’s followed by
Yuichi: の方
Peter: Now の is the possessive particle and then 方 is direction. So I guess here, he is using お前の方 not just you but things going on in your side. So you and your life. And then we have
Yuichi: こそ
Peter: So this emphasizes お前の方 like you and things going on in your side. This is followed by
Yuichi: どうだったんだよ
Peter: How are things or how were things like what happened.
Naomi: この「こそ」ですが、「はじめまして。どうぞよろしくお願いします。」って言われたときに「こちらこそよろしくお願いします。」の「こそ」と同じですよね。
Yuichi: または、「こちらの方こそ」とも言えますよね。
Peter: 聞いたことないです。 I have never heard that.
Yuichi: Oh really?
Peter: Yeah.
Yuichi: This is kind of more polite than こちらこそ
Naomi: ちょっと練習しましょうか?はじめまして。よろしくお願いします。
Yuichi: こちらこそよろしくお願いします。
Naomi: Or
Yuichi: こちらの方こそよろしくお願いいたします。
Peter: And also, as this is more polite, you changed します to いたします. Of course the humble form of します. So can we have a few more examples with こそ?
Naomi: あやまってよ。
Yuichi: そっちこそあやまれよ。
Peter: Apologize, you should apologize. ちょっと強いね。兄弟とか like family or fighting family or good friends.

Outro

Peter: That’s going to do for today.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Yuichi: さよなら。
