INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは。夏子です。
Sachiko: Sachiko here. Borrowing a Book. 夏子さんは図書館によく行きますか?
Natsuko: 前はよく行ったんですけど。
Sachiko: はい。
Natsuko: 最近は近所にないので行ってません。
Sachiko: 近所にないんですか。 You have no library in the neighborhood?
Natsuko: Maybe there is one but I couldn’t find out.
Sachiko: What –when you did go to the library, what kind of things did you borrow?
Natsuko: Well anything. I like to read books.
Sachiko: My new apartment is actually right near a library and it’s great.
Natsuko: いいですね。
Sachiko: 雑誌をいつも借りてます。
Natsuko: あ、雑誌。
Sachiko: まじめな本はあまり読まないですけど。
Natsuko: でもいいアイデアですよね。雑誌は一回読んだら、もう、ねえ、本当に二度と読まないですもんね。とっておくものじゃないですもんね。
Sachiko: Exactly. So today’s dialogue is between a student and a librarian and apparently, the book that the student is looking for is not in stock. Let’s tune in to find out what happens.
DIALOGUE
STUDENT: I'd like to check out this book.
(学生証を提示する)。
(presents his/her ID card.)
スタッフ: 現在、7冊お借りになってますね。学部生の方は、7冊までしか貸し出しできないんです。
STAFF: You currently have seven books on loan from this library. You can only check out up to seven at a time.
学生: そうですか・・・。
STUDENT: Oh, is that so...
スタッフ: もしかしたら、中野区に同じ本が在架かもしれないので、調べてみます。ちょっとお待ちください。
STAFF: Wait. We may have the same book in Nakano Ward. Let me look it up. Can you wait a while?
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
スタッフ: 湘南の図書館にあるようですが、お取り寄せしますか。
STAFF: We have that book at our Shōnan branch. Do you want me to bring it here?
学生: はい。お願いします。
STUDENT: Yes, please.
スタッフ: では、あちらの黄色のフォームに必要事項を記入してください。問題なければ、明日の夕方くらいには届くと思います。
STAFF: Well, please fill out the yellow form. If there are no problems, we should get it by tomorrow evening.
学生: わかりました。ありがとうございます。
STUDENT: Okay. Thank you very much.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Sachiko: Natsuko san 今日の会話どう思いましたか?
Natsuko: 親切ですね。とりよせてくれるんですか。
Sachiko: ねぇ。 I didn’t know that they do that for you.
Natsuko: And these librarians actually said, they are bringing a book all the way from [*]
Sachiko: Which is really far away. It is like close to the ocean right?
Natsuko: Uhoo.
Sachiko: And Shinjuku is like Central Tokyo.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So that's good, what two hours by train?
Natsuko: Maybe.
Sachiko: So this is like a book delivery and it’s going to be there by tomorrow evening.
Natsuko: Very convenient.
Sachiko: じゃあ、一つ目の単語をお願いします。
Natsuko: 貸し出し
Sachiko: Lending.
Natsuko: (slow)かしだし (natural speed) 貸し出し
Sachiko: Now this is the noun.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: What’s the original verb for to lend?
Natsuko: 貸し出す
Sachiko: Where does this appear in our dialogue today?
Natsuko: It actually appears in the first line right 貸し出しをお願いします。
Sachiko: Though it’s literally translated as lending books please.
Natsuko: Yes. Or please take care of it.
Sachiko: And the second time it appears
Natsuko: 貸し出しできないんです。
Sachiko: You cannot lend out. So 貸し出し. What do you call a book that is currently lent out and is not available in the library?
Natsuko: 貸し出し中
Sachiko: And you would see this mark at video rentals too. Wouldn’t you?
Natsuko: Right.
Sachiko: Yeah as a little red mark that says 貸し出し中
Natsuko: 貸し出し中
Sachiko: Next vocabulary please
Natsuko: 在架
Sachiko: In stock.
Natsuko: (slow)ざいか (natural speed) 在架
Sachiko: Now this word is a little bit new to me as well. I am more familiar with the word [*]
Natsuko: Oh yes. That means inventory, stock.
Sachiko: So how is 在架 different from 在庫
Natsuko: 在架 means it’s in the shelves.
Sachiko: Okay.
Natsuko: It’s on the shelf, it’s in the bookshelf or it’s in the video shelf.
Sachiko: Oh so inventory 在庫 inventory would pertain to products that are in the backend in the storage room with the warehouse.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: But 在架 is the one that’s actually on the shelf.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Ready to be taken out.
Natsuko: I think you use this word exclusively for books.
Sachiko: It’s a library terminology.
Natsuko: I think so. Maybe you can use it for video rentals as well but I usually hear this only in libraries.
Sachiko: Okay. Well we can try that out. Next time I go to a video rentals, I can say 在架ありますか。 and if they look at me blankly, it will be clear that it’s wrong vocabulary. Okay the next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 図書館
Sachiko: Library.
Natsuko: (slow)としょかん (natural speed) 図書館
Sachiko: Now let’s break down this word a little bit. The first two letters 図書 what does that mean or what kind of image does that have?
Natsuko: Well it’s obviously books but the first kanji means drawings and charts
Sachiko: Right for illustration.
Natsuko: Yes diagram.
Sachiko: I see, I see.
Natsuko: So this word is also used for maps. Not only books full of text but also some pictures or materials.
Sachiko: Right. And the second kanji
Natsuko: 書 That’s the kanji for books.
Sachiko: Right and documents.
Natsuko: Yes documents.
Sachiko: Written things and the last kanji 館 what does that stand for?
Natsuko: That stands for building. Usually large buildings.
Sachiko: Can we use that with any other vocabulary. What about…
Natsuko: 体育館
Sachiko: Ah gymnasium. 体育 means to nurture the body.
Natsuko: Or maybe 美術館
Sachiko: Art museum or art gallery.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So literally 美術 art 館 building. What about Movie Theater?
Natsuko: 映画館
Sachiko: The next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 取り寄せ
Sachiko: To get something delivered.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Especially delivered for you because you’ve placed an order.
Natsuko: (slow)とりよせ (natural speed) 取り寄せ
Sachiko: Now that was a long translation, excuse me but there is no particular English word for this, is there?
Natsuko: I don’t think so.
Sachiko: Yeah. So let’s think of some examples. In this dialogue, it was a person trying to get something from the library and they didn’t have it. So the library staff 取り寄せた。
Natsuko: 湘南の図書館にあるようですが、お取り寄せしますか?
Sachiko: So they are asking, we have it at the library in 湘南, would you like us to make a special delivery for you or 取り寄せる to get or obtain for you on your behalf.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Now what’s another situation we can think of?
Natsuko: 有名店のケーキをお取り寄せする。
Sachiko: Get a cake specially delivered from a famous store.
Natsuko: お取り寄せ is I think it’s kind of a hot topic. It means special delivery but you know, some special foods or products that are not in the store near…
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: Nearby, but in these days, you know, you can order them online or on the internet and you can make it delivered to the house.
Sachiko: Right. So it’s a special delivery of anything that’s not readily available in your neighborhood.
Natsuko: Uhoo.
Sachiko: The next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 必要事項
Sachiko: Necessary information.
Natsuko: (slow)ひつようじこう (natural speed) 必要事項
Sachiko: Now this consists of two words. What are they?
Natsuko: 必要
Sachiko: Is necessary.
Natsuko: 事項
Sachiko: Information maybe or matters.
Natsuko: Or categories, matters.
Sachiko: Yeah. So in the dialogue it appears as
Natsuko: あちらの黄色のフォームに必要事項を記入してください。
Sachiko: Please fill in the necessary information in that yellow form over there. Now when they say 必要事項 what kind of information do they usually ask for?
Natsuko: I think personal information like your name, address or some kind of reasons for application.
Sachiko: Ah that’s true, that’s true. So it’s personal information plus and depending on the case you might ask me why do you need this, when do you need it by et cetera, how many copies do you need?
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: And the last vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 記入する
Sachiko: Fill out.
Natsuko: (slow)きにゅうする (natural speed) 記入する
Sachiko: Now this comes up a lot. It used to be just on paper.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Filling out information on a paper but now we do it online.
Natsuko: Oh yeah right.
Sachiko: Yeah so would we use this verb filling out an online application?
Natsuko: I think you can use it but maybe it will be more popular. 入力する。
Sachiko: 入力する is input data. That’s true. Anything to do with a computer is usually 入力する。
Natsuko: Yes.

Lesson focus

Sachiko: Okay so let’s go on to today’s grammar point. We have a lot to cover but they are very useful. So hang in there. The first grammar point is もしかしたら. Now how would you explain that?
Natsuko: Maybe.
Sachiko: And we have a lot of phrases that are similar to this such as
Natsuko: もしかすると That’s almost the same.
Sachiko: Yeah the meaning is roughly the same or ひょっとしたら which is a little bit more colloquial do you think?
Natsuko: I think so.
Sachiko: Casual maybe. So for example, if you are about to be late to a Get together, you could say
Natsuko: もしかしたら約束の時間に遅れるかもしれません。
Sachiko: I might be late for our Get together.
Sachiko: That sounds very formal.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Very polite. And you can just replace もしかしたら with もしかすると in this sentence and it would become.
Natsuko: もしかすると約束の時間に遅れるかもしれません。
Sachiko: So let’s look at the latter half of this sentence. かもしれない。 Literally translated, that would be there is a possibility or there might be a possibility.
Natsuko: Yes. So together, もしかしたら、なになにかもしれません。
Sachiko: Yes. That’s a set, kind of a set. So if we look at the sample sentences again もしかしたら約束の時間に遅れるかもしれない. So かもしれない before that, you have a verb. 約束の時間に遅れる。 That’s the action that may or may not happen. You are not sure.
Natsuko: Yes. And もしかしたら and かもしれない so it’s the possibility.
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: But I think the possibility is a little bit low.
Sachiko: So when you actually call someone and tell them もしかしたら約束の時間に遅れるかもしれません, it’s not definitely going to happen.
Natsuko: Yes maybe
Sachiko: Yeah you are just letting them know that there is a possibility that this might happen. So don’t be shocked, don’t be angry. Let me up the hook.
Natsuko: Yes it’s like just in case.
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: Kind of nuance.
Sachiko: Right. Japanese people are very, very punctual. So they are very sensitive about being late.
Natsuko: Well maybe that depends on...
Sachiko: The person.
Natsuko: The person. もしかしたら遅れるかもしれない。
Sachiko: I might be late or there is a possibility I might be late. There is another phrase which is… 多分なになにだろう。
Natsuko: 多分遅れるだろう。
Sachiko: Ah now in this case, the possibilities are higher or lower than the previous sentence?
Natsuko: Higher.
Sachiko: So I probably will be late.
Natsuko: Yes. It’s more like perhaps.
Sachiko: So it’s much closer to actually happening. Now not to confuse even more but I just want to point out something that you should not do. 多分なになにかもしれない。 will not work, not a combination.
Natsuko: Those two don't come together.
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: 多分遅れるかもしれない。 Well maybe people tend to say that.
Sachiko: Say that colloquially?
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Technically incorrect.
Natsuko: You are right.
Sachiko: Right grammatically. So again the two sentence structures are
Natsuko: もしかしたら遅れるかもしれない。
Sachiko: and the second one is
Natsuko: 多分遅れるだろう。
Sachiko: And the one with the higher possibility is
Natsuko: 多分、だろう。
Sachiko: Right and it can be used for any kind of situation.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: If something came up at the last minute, definitely use these sentences. So if you thought it was probably going to rain tomorrow with a high possibility, what would you say?
Natsuko: 明日は多分、雨が降るでしょう。
Sachiko: If you thought it was going to be sunny tomorrow
Natsuko: 明日は多分、晴れるでしょう。
Sachiko: That’s something that we hear in the weather forecast a lot.
Natsuko: 明日は多分、雨でしょう。
Sachiko: So if you hear that on TV, it means that there is probably a 70% or 80% possibility that it is going to rain.
Natsuko: I guess so.
Sachiko: Would you say?
Natsuko: Umm.
Sachiko: What if the possibility was lower? What would they say?
Natsuko: もしかしたら、明日は雨が降るかもしれません。
Sachiko: So maybe with a slight possibility, it might rain tomorrow. So that would be about what 20% or 30% possibility maybe?
Natsuko: I think so.
Sachiko: Yeah I mean Japanese weather forecasts are really big with numbers. They always have a number on it.
Natsuko: Yes the percentage.
Sachiko: It’s a percentage.
Natsuko: Yeah.
Sachiko: And they are not always correct but I just found it interesting.
Natsuko: You are right.

Outro

Sachiko: So now that we’ve covered how to borrow books at the library, let’s all go out and do it.
Natsuko: Yes みんなで図書館で本を借りましょう。
Sachiko: 日本語の本を借りて勉強してください。
Natsuko: はい、じゃあ頑張りましょう。じゃあ、また来週。
Sachiko: それじゃあ、またね。
