| Natsuko: こんにちは、夏子です。 |
| Sachiko: Sachiko here. Reunion part 2. So Natsuko san, here comes part 2. |
| Natsuko: Here we go. I am wondering what’s happened to Kinoshita san, the man that became really handsome. I want to find out the secret. |
| Sachiko: Right. So in Reunion part 1, we just found out that Kinoshita became really, really handsome all of a sudden and they have no idea why. |
| Natsuko: Yeah. |
| Sachiko: I think we are going to find out in today’s lesson. |
| Natsuko: Umm can’t wait. Let’s listen in. |
| DIALOGUE |
| イワオ: 木ノ下に電話してみようぜ。 |
| カエデ: 昨日、あまり話せなかったしね。 |
| (木ノ下に電話) |
| 木ノ下: もしもし、木ノ下ですが。やあイワオくん。どうしたの? |
| イワオ: おう木ノ下。いやあ、昨日は懐かしかったな。それにしても、木下の変わりようには度肝を抜かれたよ。一体どうしてたんだよ。その辺、話してくれよ。 |
| 木ノ下: ははは。確かに、高校の時の自分とは全然違ってうつるみたいだね。実はあれからすぐ、世界一周の旅に出たんだ。途中、南米のペルーにある、世界遺産のマチュピチュ遺跡で、不思議な女性に出会ったんだ。なんと、あのロックフェラー財団の幹部だった人で、その人から、ありとあらゆることを徹底的に教え込まれたわけなんだ。 |

| カエデ: 昨日、あまり話せなかったしね。 |
| KAEDE: Sure. We couldn't talk to him much yesterday. |

| 木ノ下: もしもし、木ノ下ですが。やあイワオくん。どうしたの? |
| KINOSHITA: Hello, this is Kinoshita. Hey, Iwao. How are you? |
| イワオ: おう木ノ下。いやあ、昨日は懐かしかったな。それにしても、木下の変わりようには度肝を抜かれたよ。一体どうしてたんだよ。その辺、話してくれよ。 |
| IWAO: Hey, Kinoshita. Wow, it was really a blast from the past, yesterday, wasn't it? We were also really surprised at how much you'd changed over the years. What on earth happened to you? Tell us about that. |
| 木ノ下: ははは。確かに、高校の時の自分とは全然違ってうつるみたいだね。実はあれからすぐ、世界一周の旅に出たんだ。途中、南米のペルーにある、世界遺産のマチュピチュ遺跡で、不思議な女性に出会ったんだ。なんと、あのロックフェラー財団の幹部だった人で、その人から、ありとあらゆることを徹底的に教え込まれたわけなんだ。 |
| KINOSHITA: Yeah. I guess I have changed a lot since high school. Actually right after graduation, I took a trip around the world. I stopped by Machu Picchu, the World Heritage Site in Peru, and met a mysterious woman. She was a senior official at the Rockefeller Foundation and she taught me a lot of things. |
| イワオ: えっ、何があったんだよ! |
| IWAO: Really? What happened? |
| 木ノ下: 電話では長くなりそうだから、続きはまた今度会った時に話すよ。 |
| KINOSHITA: It's kind of a long story. So I'll tell you the rest when we meet. |
| イワオ: おいおい。気になって眠れないよ。じゃあ、時間がある時に連絡しろよ! |
| IWAO: Hey, now you've got me so curious I can't sleep! Well, call me when you have time! |
| 木ノ下: OK〜。 |
| KINOSHITA: Got it. |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Sachiko: So! 夏子さん、どう思いましたか？ |
| Natsuko: かえって謎が深まった気がします。 It’s become more mysterious. |
| Sachiko: Hmm… |
| Natsuko: What was he doing in Machu Picchu? |
| Sachiko: I have no idea and why would someone come back really, really handsome after being in the ruins and he talks about meeting a wonderful woman. Have you been to Machu Picchu by the way? |
| Natsuko: No unfortunately not. |
| Sachiko: Yeah I have been dying to see that place but it’s just a little bit too far from Japan, isn’t it? |
| Natsuko: It’s right at the opposite side of the globe right? |
| Sachiko: Oh is it? |
| Natsuko: I think so. |
| Sachiko: So how many hours by plane would that be? |
| Natsuko: Umm I can’t imagine. |
| Sachiko: Okay let’s check out today’s vocabulary. |

| Sachiko: 夏子さん、一つ目、お願いします。 |
| Natsuko: 度肝 |
| Sachiko: Nerve, spirit. So in the conversation, we use the word 度肝を抜かれたよ. |
| Natsuko: Yes I think that’s the most common expression using this word. |
| Sachiko: Great and it means shocked or surprised. Quite shocked. |
| Natsuko: Right. |
| Sachiko: So the literal translation would be that your internal organs and your heart were plugged out or pulled out. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: Pretty grory isn’t it? |
| Natsuko: So it’s an expression used for when you are really, really surprised. |
| F1: Right. |
| Natsuko: Like your eyeballs just popped out of their sockets out of shock like that. |
| F1: We say that in Japanese, don’t we 目ん玉が飛び出る。 |
| Natsuko: Oh yes. |
| Sachiko: Your eyeballs just popped out of your socket. |
| Natsuko: Yes. So it has the same nuance, isn’t it? It’s like they are at the same level. |
| Sachiko: It is, isn’t it? Next vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: 世界一周 |
| Sachiko: Round the world trip, globetrotting. This expression is actually divided into two words right. The first one 世界 means world and the second one 一周 that means once around. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: So together it’s once around the world. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: Round the World trip. So 一周 can be used for other things too right? |
| Natsuko: Right for running track トラックを一周する。 |
| Sachiko: Oh yes, it can be used as a verb too 一周する to do one round or one lap. |
| Natsuko: 世界一周する。 |
| Sachiko: To take a trip around the world. |
| Natsuko: 学校内を一周する。 |
| Sachiko: We did that a lot in Junior High. whenever someone got in trouble, we would all have to take responsibility together. So we all had to run together. Okay next vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: 不思議 |
| Sachiko: Wonder, miracle, strange, mystery, marvel, curiosity. Wasn’t there a TV program called 世界不思議発見？ |
| Natsuko: Oh yes, that’s one of the very popular programs. |
| Sachiko: So that could be translated as discovering the mysteries of the world. This word can be also used as な adjective 不思議な。 |
| Natsuko: And that can be used for a person or a situation? |
| Sachiko: Anything. |
| Natsuko: Anything. |
| Sachiko: Almost anything. |
| Natsuko: 不思議な世界 |
| Sachiko: It’s a mysterious world out there. |
| Natsuko: Yes. 不思議な話 |
| Sachiko: Ah very, very true. Okay next vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: 徹底的 |
| Sachiko: Thoroughness. Now if you wanted to say thoroughly, what would you say? |
| Natsuko: 徹底的に |
| Sachiko: So if I wanted to thoroughly investigate something, what can I say? |
| Natsuko: 徹底的に探す |
| Sachiko: To thoroughly investigate or thoroughly search and the last vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: 遺跡 |
| Sachiko: Historic ruins, remains, relics. What would you say are some of the better known Japanese ruins? |
| Natsuko: Hah there are not many but I have heard of 吉野ヶ里遺跡 |
| Sachiko: In which prefecture is that? |
| Natsuko: I believe it’s in Saga. I remember when I was in junior high, we took a trip to see the 古墳, the old burial groups in Nara Prefecture as I lived in Osaka. It is pretty close by. That was amazing. |
| Sachiko: That’s also a very ancient ruin. Isn’t it? |
| Natsuko: Yes |
| Sachiko: It’s kind of shaped like what you would say, it’s like…. |
| Natsuko: It’s like a hole. |
| Sachiko: Yeah it’s like a – yeah it looks like a keyhole if you look at it from the sky. Yeah there is a circuit like a round shape and a triangle stuck together to look like a keyhole from the top. |
| Natsuko: Yeah and it’s really huge, isn’t it? |
| Sachiko: It’s huge, yeah. |
| Natsuko: 懐かしいですね、これは。 |

| Sachiko: Okay let’s look at today’s grammar point なになにして。夏子さん、どうやって使うんでしょうか、これは。 |
| Natsuko: This is used when attaching auxiliary verbs to する verbs right? |
| Sachiko: Uhoo… |
| Natsuko: So する becomes して and the auxiliary verb comes after. |
| Sachiko: So if you look at our conversation, the first line is 木下に電話してみようぜ. Let’s give Kinoshita a call. |
| Natsuko: Uhoo so auxiliary verb みる is attached to 電話する |
| Sachiko: To become let’s give him a call. |
| Natsuko: So 電話する。する becomes して and みる is attached 電話してみる。 try a call. |
| Sachiko: Ah try giving him a call. And what’s the other example we see in our conversation. The second to last sentence is じゃあ時間がある時に連絡してくださいよ。 |
| Natsuko: Yes this one’s also the same. The auxiliary verb ください is attached to 連絡する。する becomes して and then ください. So please give me a ring or please contact me. |
| Sachiko: Yes. |
| Natsuko: It’s actually an expression used very often in the business scene. Isn’t it? |
| Sachiko: That’s true, that’s true. So after you held a meeting and you decide what you are going to do for the next step, you wrap up the meeting with じゃあ、連絡してください。 |
| Natsuko: Yeah. |
| Sachiko: We can also use this in emails a lot too. |
| Natsuko: Of course yeah. |
| Sachiko: So let me know when you find out this and that. |
| Natsuko: Uhoo… よく使いますね。 |
