| Sachiko: Sachiko here. Lower intermediate lesson #23. Reunion Part 1. 夏子さん、今日は同窓会の話ですね。 |
| Natsuko: あ、いいですね。 |
| Sachiko: 最近、行ってますか？同窓会。 |
| Natsuko: いや、私行ってないんですよ。 |
| Sachiko: あら。 |
| Natsuko: あまり、ないみたいで。 |
| Sachiko: え、高校とか大学とか。 |
| Natsuko: 大学の友達はよく会うんですけど、高校の友達は普段から仲良くしている人しかあまり会わないですね。 |
| Sachiko: あーそうなんですか。じゃあ、学校が同窓会を設定してくれるっていうのはあまりないんですか。 |
| Natsuko: あまり聞かないですね。 |
| Sachiko: Oh that’s unusual. So your school doesn’t really organize a reunion for all its students. |
| Natsuko: Yes I don’t hear. At least I don’t hear any. |
| Sachiko: Oh okay. |
| Natsuko: Maybe they can’t contact me. |
| Sachiko: They don’t know where you are. |
| Natsuko: Yeah. |
| Sachiko: There is an APB out on Natsuko san. They are talking about you. |
| Natsuko: Maybe. |
| Sachiko: I have been very fortunate. The high school I went to was a private high school and they put a lot of effort into keeping in touch. |
| Natsuko: Wow! |
| Sachiko: Yeah so I get an invitation almost every year, truly nice. |
| Natsuko: Oh that’s nice. |
| Sachiko: Yeah I can’t always go because it’s all the way in Osaka but… |
| Natsuko: Oh yeah sure. |
| Sachiko: Yeah 逆に大学の同窓会は全然ないです。 |
| Natsuko: Oh so there is no Reunion for university. |
| Sachiko: Yeah I think the university is just too big. |
| Natsuko: Maybe. |
| Sachiko: They just can’t possibly contact everyone. So it’s always fun. Well let’s find out what happens at this Reunion. |

| イワオ: 昨日の同窓会は、結構盛り上がったな。ちょっと、はりきりすぎたよ。 |
| カエデ: いやあ〜、昨日は飲みすぎて、まだ気分が悪いよ。二日酔いってやつ。 |
| イワオ: 本当に久しぶりだったよな。 |
| カエデ: 15年振りくらいじゃないかしら。 |
| イワオ: みんな変わったよなあ。クラスのマドンナだったナオミちゃんなんて、最初見た時、ナオミちゃんかどうか、わからなかったもん。昔はスリムだったのに、太りすぎ。女って変わるよなあ...。 |
| カエデ: でも、一番の驚きは木ノ下だったでしょ。最初入って来た時、この美男子は一体誰だ?って・・・まさか木ノ下とは思いもしなかった。 |

| カエデ: 謎だね・・・。 |

| IWAO: Yesterday's class reunion was pretty fun, wasn't it? I think I got a little worked up. |
| カエデ: いやあ〜、昨日は飲みすぎて、まだ気分が悪いよ。二日酔いってやつ。 |
| KAEDE: Yeah. I drank too much last night. I still feel sick with a hangover. |
| イワオ: 本当に久しぶりだったよな。 |
| IWAO: It really had been a long time since we all last met. |
| カエデ: 15年振りくらいじゃないかしら。 |
| KAEDE: About 15 years, right? |
| イワオ: みんな変わったよなあ。クラスのマドンナだったナオミちゃんなんて、最初見た時、ナオミちゃんかどうか、わからなかったもん。昔はスリムだったのに、太りすぎ。女って変わるよなあ...。 |
| IWAO: Everyone had changed so much. At first glance, I didn't even recognize Naomi, who was the Madonna of the class. She was so skinny before and now she's too fat. Women can change so much... |
| カエデ: でも、一番の驚きは木ノ下だったでしょ。最初入って来た時、この美男子は一体誰だ?って・・・まさか木ノ下とは思いもしなかった。 |
| KAEDE: But the biggest change was Kinoshita. When he first came into the room, I thought, "Who is this handsome guy?" It never occurred to me that it could be Kinoshita. |

| IWAO: In high school, he always had messy hair, worn out clothes and was the leader of the geeks. What on Earth happened to him? |
| カエデ: 謎だね・・・。 |
| KAEDE: It's a mystery... |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Sachiko: 夏子さん、この同窓会の話、どう思いましたか？ |
| Natsuko: うん。なんかよくありそうですよね。 |
| Sachiko: そうですよね。絶対ありますよね。 |
| Natsuko: It sounded quite realistic. |
| Sachiko: It did ていうか、卒業してから10年、15年経つと変わるほうが自然ですよね。 |
| Natsuko: Yes I think it’s quite natural that you can’t recognize someone you met. |
| Sachiko: Yeah. |
| Natsuko: The first time in 15 years. |
| Sachiko: Yeah it’s a long time. I think it’s only natural to change. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: I think it’s actually kind of sad if people don’t change and I go to Reunions all the time and they say, I haven’t changed since I was 16. |
| Natsuko: People keep on saying that. |
| Sachiko: I know it’s so sad. |
| Natsuko: Yeah. |
| Sachiko: It’s like wait! I thought I’ve gotten a little bit sexy, no! |
| Natsuko: No. |
| Sachiko: It’s really sad. I’d rather change. |
| Natsuko: And this guy Kinoshita seems to have changed a lot. |
| Sachiko: Yeah it seems like it. Yeah I wonder if it’s the same Kinoshita who was missing in China from the other stories. |
| Natsuko: Oh yeah that one was Kinoshita also right? |
| Sachiko: Yes it’s getting very confusing. I wonder if it’s the same person. |
| Natsuko: Maybe we can find that later in the series. |
| Sachiko: Yep we will have to stay tuned. Won’t we? |
| Natsuko: Yes definitely. |
| Sachiko: All the listeners have to listen to all the levels to find out what happened to Kinoshita. Okay let’s check out today’s vocabulary. 夏子さん、お願いします。 |

| Natsuko: 盛り上がる |
| Sachiko: To rouse, to swell, to rise or to get really excited. Can you use this in a sample sentence please? |
| Natsuko: パーティが最高に盛り上がった |
| Sachiko: The party was really rocking. Just look exciting じゃあすごくエキサイティングだったってことですね。パーティが。 |
| Natsuko: そうですね。 |
| Sachiko: 次の単語をお願いします。 |
| Natsuko: 張り切る |
| Sachiko: To hustle. |
| Natsuko: これはよくピーターがやってることですね。 |
| Sachiko: とっても張り切ってますね。 |

| Sachiko: So what would you say is the difference between 盛り上がる and 張り切る because they both have the nuance of getting excited and really getting roused up. |
| Natsuko: 盛り上がる is more objective. It’s also used for people’s feelings. |
| Sachiko: Right. |
| Natsuko: But it’s more like you know the scene is very… |
| Sachiko: The atmosphere. |
| Natsuko: Yeah the atmosphere. |
| Sachiko: And I also sensed 盛り上がる is used more for group setting like… |
| Natsuko: Oh yes. |
| Sachiko: Everybody in the group is really excited together. |
| Natsuko: Sure. |
| Sachiko: Whereas 張り切る is an individual thing like I could be 張り切っている all alone which is kind of sad but that’s how I use it. |
| Natsuko: Sure. |
| Sachiko: So sometimes if one person is really, really excited and everybody is not, you say 彼女張り切ってるね。 |
| Natsuko: In a kind of a cool manner. |
| Sachiko: Yeah. It’s like Tokyo. I am looking at the Osaka person and saying, what’s wrong with her? |
| Natsuko: So no you are not like that. |
| Sachiko: Okay 次の単語をお願いします。 |
| Natsuko: 美男子 |
| Sachiko: Handsome man. You pronounce this also as びだんし。 |
| Natsuko: Oh okay. |
| Sachiko: The characters for this word is a beautiful male child. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: So it could be anybody who is a handsome man. |
| Natsuko: It’s not only used for boys. It’s also used for you know mature men. |
| Sachiko: So there is no age range to this. |
| Natsuko: Not really I think. |
| Sachiko: Great okay. Next word please. |
| Natsuko: 一体 |
| Sachiko: What on earth or really! So if I wanted to say, what on earth are you doing, what would you say? |
| Natsuko: 一体何をしているの？ |
| Sachiko: That’s one question you don’t want people asking you. じゃあ Next word please. |
| Natsuko: 分厚い本 |
| Sachiko: Bulky book, thick book. Now the adjective 分厚い, can you use that for other nouns as well? |
| Natsuko: Oh yes めがね eyeglasses. Thick eyeglasses. |
| Sachiko: Coke bottle lens in Japanese would be 分厚いめがね。Next word please. |
| Natsuko: オタク系 |
| Sachiko: Now this is a word we hear a lot in Japan. Otaku. |
| Natsuko: Yeah. |
| Sachiko: What’s the difference between オタク and オタク系？Well maybe Otaku is a bona fide Otaku, you are 100% qualified for that category of geeks whereas オタク系 is you are sort of in that group but you could or could not be in that group. |
| Natsuko: Yeah it gives a feeling that kind of Otaku. |
| Sachiko: Yeah and that the word Otaku is used in English conversations too. Isn’t it? |
| Natsuko: Really? |
| Sachiko: Yeah I have a lot of non-Japanese friends who love Anime and Manga and they are proud to call themselves Otaku. |
| Natsuko: Wow. |
| Sachiko: Yeah they go around saying hi, I am an Otaku and I guess in English speaking countries, it’s considered kind of cool maybe but it’s also becoming kind of cool in Japanese as well right? |
| Natsuko: Right, right. They are having a – yeah, they are really proud of themselves. |
| Sachiko: They are yeah. |
| Natsuko: Being Otaku. |
| Sachiko: Right like I remember 10 or 15 years ago, the word Otaku had a really negative connotation. It’s like you are socially inept and you have no life but now it’s just used to refer to what people are interested in like their hobbies. |
| Natsuko: Like they are maniacs. |
| Sachiko: Yeah.. |
| Natsuko: Freaks. |
| Sachiko: You know manga, anime and that kind of stuff. It’s not as negative any more. So that’s a good thing. Okay next vocabulary please. |
| Natsuko: 筆頭 |
| Sachiko: First on a list. So literally the kanji is for brush and head. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: And it could be the brush tip or it could be the first on the list or the most major or the leading. |
| Natsuko: Yes right. |
| Sachiko: So how would you say leading shareholder? |
| Natsuko: 筆頭株主 |
| Sachiko: And the last word please. |
| Natsuko: 謎 |
| Sachiko: Riddle, puzzle, enigma. |
| Natsuko: The mystery. |
| Sachiko: Oh mystery, definitely. Now when I was little, I remember using word なぞなぞ a lot. |
| Natsuko: Oh yes. |
| Sachiko: So was that just a repeat of the word 謎？ |
| Sachiko: Uhoo I think so. |
| Sachiko: Japanese people love to repeat their words. Don’t they? |
| Natsuko: Yes they do. |
| Sachiko: なぞなぞ。こしょこしょ。 It is very strange and it could be used as a riddle or a puzzle. |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: Also I tend to see this on TV a lot. If they had a documentary about the mysteries of the pyramid… |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: They will call it ピラミッドの謎 |
| Natsuko: Uhoo… You see a lot of those. |
| Sachiko: Yeah they just… Yeah it just makes it really appealing, makes you want to really watch it. So the word なぞなぞ is a childish way of saying riddles, I guess. |
| Natsuko: Yeah. Quizzes |
| Sachiko: Yeah |
| Natsuko: Riddles. |
| Sachiko: Yeah. I think they do it just to make it sound fun for the kids to do. |
| Natsuko: Yeah it’s more like a play. |
| Sachiko: It becomes a playful thing whereas ピラミッドの謎 has a really heavy connotation to it. You know, it’s like uh The Mysteries of the Pyramid. Okay big difference right there. では今日のグラマーポイントをお願いします。 |

| Sachiko: Probably. Well let’s look at the conversation. The first line has |
| Natsuko: ちょっと張り切りすぎたよ。 |
| Sachiko: So this man is saying, oh I kind of hustled it too much. I got too excited. |
| Natsuko: Uhoo. |
| Sachiko: What are the other examples? The second line, we have |
| Natsuko: いや～昨日は飲みすぎて。 |
| Sachiko: I drank too much yesterday. 飲みすぎて。 |
| Natsuko: Very often used phrase. |
| Sachiko: Yeah. |
| Natsuko: Isn’t it? |
| Sachiko: Yes unfortunately. |
| Natsuko: So すぎ is attached to the masu stem of a verb. |
| Sachiko: In this case, the original root form is 飲む the masu form is 飲みます。 |
| Natsuko: Yes. So drop the masu |
| Sachiko: Drop the masu and stick the すぎ。 |
| Natsuko: Yes. |
| Sachiko: 飲みすぎて。 What’s another example in our conversation? |
| Natsuko: Oh oh! 太りすぎ。 |
| Sachiko: Don’t look at me please. |
| Natsuko: So too fat is what it’s trying to say. |
| Sachiko: Yes. |
| Natsuko: This is also the masu stem of 太る。太る is to gain weight. |
| Sachiko: Yes. |
| Natsuko: So 太ります is to gain weight and 太りすぎ is you’ve gained too much weight. |
| Sachiko: Okay enough talk about weight. Let’s move on. |
| Natsuko: Okay yes. |
| Sachiko: So today’s grammar was なになにすぎ You stick it on to a masu stem. So Natsuko san, next time you do go to a Reunion, what would you like people to say about you? |
| Natsuko: うーん、なんだろう。 It would be ideal if they said きれいになったね。How is that? |
| Sachiko: Ah so it would be great if someone said, you’ve become really pretty. |
| Natsuko: Uhoo. |
| Sachiko: Umm. I am sure you will get all that crap yes. |
| Natsuko: I will dream of being said that way. |
| Sachiko: Yeah. |
| Natsuko: But I know what they will say 変わらないね。 |
| Sachiko: You haven’t changed one bit since you were 16. |
| Natsuko: Yes. How sad! |
| Sachiko: Hey it’s either one or the other. You’ve changed too much or you haven’t changed enough. |
