Natsuko: こんにちは。夏子です。
Sachiko: Sachiko here. How to Order Pizza Part 2.
Natsuko: Oh the critical part.
Sachiko: Yes the most important part when you are talking about the size and the crust and the types of pizza.
Natsuko: Below we go into the details, the most important part.
Sachiko: Now in the last lesson, I talked about how much I loved pizza but Natsuko san, how about you?
Natsuko: Well of course, I love pizza.
Sachiko: Yes.
Natsuko: But unfortunately it’s a bit expensive when you want to order delivery pizza.
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: Delivering pizza.
Sachiko: Yeah so for a medium-sized pizza, it’s about what ¥3000 maybe?
Natsuko: Yeah it depends but….
Sachiko: It can be around $3 for a medium-sized pizza which is only enough for about two people.
Natsuko: Oh really?
Sachiko: I can eat it all alone probably.
Natsuko: You definitely love pizza.
Sachiko: Definitely. Okay well, let’s look at what kind of pizza Arisa wants to order.
Natsuko: Okay.
DIALOGUE
店員: では、ご注文をお伺いします。ピザ生地とサイズをお選び下さい。
ユウ: ピザ生地とサイズは、どんな種類があるんですか。
店員: 生地は、パン生地とクリスピー生地がございます。クリスピー生地は、うすい生地です。サイズは、MとLの2種類です。Mは約25cmで、Lは約31cmです。
ユウ: 生地はパン生地で、サイズはLでお願いします。
店員: かしこまりました。それでは、ピザの種類をお選びください。
ユウ: えーっと、マリゲリータと、ペスカトーレの、ハーフ&ハーフでお願いします。
店員: かしこまりました。ご一緒にサイドメニューはいかがですか。
ユウ: コーラを三つお願いします。
店員: ありがとうございます。合計で4,000円です。45分ほどでお届けに上がります。スピードが売り物なので、45分を過ぎましたら半額にサービスさせていただきます。
ユウ: ほんとうですか!
店員: ご注文ありがとうございました。

PIZZA SHOP STAFF: Okay. I'll take your order now. Please choose the pizza crust and size.
ユウ: ピザ生地とサイズは、どんな種類があるんですか。
YU: What sizes and crusts do you have?
店員: 生地は、パン生地とクリスピー生地がございます。クリスピー生地は、うすい生地です。サイズは、MとLの2種類です。Mは約25cmで、Lは約31cmです。
PIZZA SHOP STAFF: We have soft crusts and crispy crust. The crispy crust is very thin. The sizes are either medium or large. A medium is about 25cm and a large is about 31cm.
ユウ: 生地はパン生地で、サイズはLでお願いします。
YU: I'll have a large pizza with a bread crust.
店員: かしこまりました。それでは、ピザの種類をお選びください。
PIZZA SHOP STAFF: OK. Please choose the type of pizza.
ユウ: えーっと、マリゲリータと、ペスカトーレの、ハーフ&ハーフでお願いします。
YU: Ummm. I'd like a half-and-half, margherita and pescatore.
店員: かしこまりました。ご一緒にサイドメニューはいかがですか。
PIZZA SHOP STAFF: OK. Would you like a side dish with your order?
ユウ: コーラを三つお願いします。
YU: Three cokes, please.
店員: ありがとうございます。合計で4,000円です。45分ほどでお届けに上がります。スピードが売り物なので、45分を過ぎましたら半額にサービスさせていただきます。
PIZZA SHOP STAFF: Thank you very much. Your total is 4000 yen. We'll deliver them to you in about 45 minutes. Speed is our sales point, so we'll give you half off if the delivery takes more than 45 minutes.
ユウ: ほんとうですか!
YU: Really?
店員: ご注文ありがとうございました。
PIZZA SHOP STAFF: Thank you for your order.

Sachiko: So Natsuko san この会話、どう思いましたか?
Natsuko: うーん。やっぱり高いと思うなあ。
Sachiko: 絶対高いですよね。Yeah for L size pizza and 3 cokes and ¥4000, almost 40 bucks.
Natsuko: Umm… okay.
VOCAB LIST
Sachiko: Okay let’s go over today’s vocabulary. Natsuko san 一つ目をお願いします。
Natsuko: 注文
Sachiko: Order, request.
Natsuko: (slow)ちゅうもん (natural speed) 注文
Sachiko: Natsuko san, in Japanese restaurants, sometimes instead of saying 注文 I hear them saying オーダー
Natsuko: Oh yes they use that as well オーダー
Sachiko: Yeah.
Natsuko: Maybe it sounds more fancier.
Sachiko: Maybe, maybe.
Natsuko: Oh and at restaurants before they close, they often come around and say, ラストオーダー
Sachiko: last order. Okay じゃ、次の単語をお願いします。
Natsuko: 伺う
Sachiko: To hear.
Natsuko: (slow)うかがう (natural speed) 伺う
Sachiko: Now what kind of form is this?
Natsuko: I think it’s the humble form to hear.
Sachiko: Okay so you would only use it when you are talking about yourself?
Natsuko: Yes. And this word also has the meaning to visit.
Sachiko: Ah that’s right. So if you wanted to say, you are going to visit someone, you could use this.
Natsuko: 伺う but they are both in humble form.
Sachiko: Right so you are lowering yourself so that you can respect the other person.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: The next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 生地
Sachiko: Uncooked dough.
Natsuko: (slow)きじ (natural speed) 生地
Sachiko: The exact meaning is uncooked dough.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: But in the conversation, I guess we use it to mean
Natsuko: Crust. You know, nothing on.
Sachiko: That makes sense.
Natsuko: Yes. This word itself means something bare, not processed.
Sachiko: Right.
Natsuko: Raw with no flavor, no seasoning. So it’s also used for textiles.
Sachiko: Ah that’s right, that’s right fabrics.
Natsuko: Fabrics.
Sachiko: 次の単語をお願いします。
Natsuko: 種類
Sachiko: Variety.
Natsuko: (slow)しゅるい (natural speed) 種類
Sachiko: Next vocabulary please
Natsuko: お届け
Sachiko: To deliver.
Natsuko: (slow)おとどけ (natural speed) お届け
Sachiko: Now this is also the humble form. Isn’t it?
Natsuko: It comes from the word 届ける to deliver.
Sachiko: So if you were the one doing the delivering and you wanted to humble yourself, you would have to say お届けする to deliver
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: 次の単語をお願いします。
Natsuko: 売り物
Sachiko: Product for sale.
Natsuko: (slow)うりもの (natural speed) 売り物
Sachiko: Now in this conversation, I think it was also used in a different way.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: スピードが売り物。What does that mean?
Natsuko: I think it’s a strong point. You get half off if they take more than 45 minutes.
Sachiko: It sounds good. Doesn’t it? Did you know that it depends on Weather condition? Oh I didn’t know that.
Natsuko: When it’s, you know, really stormy day, it may take more than you know, 30 minutes.
Sachiko: Oh and they tell you that?
Natsuko: Yes store clerk warns you. It may take more than 30 minutes.
Sachiko: Oh well that’s good, that’s good. We don’t want people on messenger bikes speeding it up and you know, crashing it to face.
Natsuko: Oh yeah definitely.
Sachiko: It’s pretty scary. Okay. The next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 半額
Sachiko: Half price.
Natsuko: (slow)はんがく (natural speed) 半額
Sachiko: Now this kanji is very interesting.
Natsuko: Yes. 半 means half.
Sachiko: Okay.
Natsuko: And 額 is an amount usually for money.
Sachiko: Okay. So for price you could say 金額 or 額
Natsuko: Yes, either way.
Sachiko: This word 半 is also used for lots of other words.
Natsuko: Oh yes, I think you often hear it for time 三時半 3:30.
Sachiko: Yes half past 3. So what if you just wanted to say simply half?
Natsuko: 半分 which is just simply half.
Sachiko: Next vocabulary please.
Natsuko: 過ぎる
Sachiko: To pass.
Natsuko: (slow)すぎる (natural speed) 過ぎる
Sachiko: Let’s actually nitpick at how to order a pizza.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Yes my favorite part. I had been looking forward to this all day. Now the first option we have is the crust.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: 生地 and at this store, what are the two options?
Natsuko: パン生地
Sachiko: Which is the thicker crust.
Natsuko: Yes. クリスピー生地
Sachiko: Crispy Crust.
Natsuko: What on earth is that?
Sachiko: It’s the one you like, the thin one.
Natsuko: The thin one. They call it crispy.
Sachiko: Okay interesting. So the thick one or the thin one and then you have the size.
Natsuko: Yes. サイズ。
Sachiko: And what are the sizes at this store?
Natsuko: MとL。
Sachiko: Yeah so in Japanese, instead of saying medium and large, we always just say M.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: And L.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: It’s also used for clothes right?
Natsuko: Oh yeah, it is, it is.
Sachiko: Okay then we have the flavor.
Natsuko: Oh yes. ピザの種類
Sachiko: The types of pizza and at this store, what kind of variety do they have?
Natsuko: Arisa seems to have ordered マルゲリータ、ペスカトーレ、ハーフアンドハーフ。
Sachiko: So half the pizza is Margherita I guess Tomato sauce based and the other half is Pescatore which is what is that?
Natsuko: Oh it’s seafood.
Sachiko: Seafood. Okay I have to warn you. Japan has a lot of bizarre pizzas that you would never, ever imagine in other countries.
Natsuko: Oh yeah right.
Sachiko: We have pineapple on our pizza and they call it Hawaiian and my Hawaiian friends are very angry about this because they are like, well….
Natsuko: Yeah they would get angry.
Sachiko: They are like, “We don’t put pineapples on our pizza. Don’t blame it on us”
Natsuko: All right, all right.
Sachiko: But you know, it has a – I don’t know Hawaii, Hawaiian kind of nuance. There are also many Japanese flavored pizzas right?
Natsuko: Right. Give us some examples.
Sachiko: Like Tarako.
Natsuko: Oh yeah. Fish Roe and some カニ you use crabs.
Sachiko: Crabs.
Natsuko: Or maybe ネギ. Yeah I see some of ネギ pizzas leak.
Sachiko: Like I think Japanese people love to just turn lots of western foods into their Japanese style.
Natsuko: And they are actually good.
Sachiko: So for example, the たらこ pizza is – what does that taste like?
Natsuko: It’s like – so it’s a combination of potatoes and Fish Roe and… Yeah Fish Roe and some mayonnaise
Sachiko: Oh yeah, lots of mayonnaise, corn mayonnaise.
Natsuko: Oh yeah right.
Sachiko: Japanese people love corn mayonnaise. They are everywhere. It’s on pizza, it’s on regular bread. Another example of Japanese people turning western foods into Japanese style is pasta.
Natsuko: Oh yeah right. Have you heard of 納豆 Spaghetti?
Sachiko: Uhoo…Uhh they are good. I love them. I personally love them but I am sure the Italians are not very happy. It’s fermented beans in a soup of pasta. Yeah it’s very good. If you ever get a chance, try it.
Natsuko: I think there is also 納豆 Pizza.
Sachiko: No...That sounds pretty uhh…You don’t see them often in delivery pizza stores but…
Natsuko: Yeah I have never yeah.
Sachiko: Sometimes you see in 居酒屋 and other you know, drinking places.
Natsuko: Right, right.
Sachiko: The recent pizza catalogues that I have been getting are the ones that have cheese layered in between the crust.
Natsuko: Wow!
Sachiko: They have cheese and baking inside the crust.
Natsuko: Inside.
Sachiko: It sounds really, really thick and I am dying to try it. I can’t wait to order it this Friday.
Natsuko: Definitely.
Sachiko: Yes.
Natsuko: And please report about that.
Sachiko: The last thing Arisa did was order drinks.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: How did she do that?
Natsuko: サイドメニュー
Sachiko: Umm I guess it is a side dish.
Natsuko: So it includes drinks?
Sachiko: Yeah Japanese pizza places have a lot of variety of side dishes.
Natsuko: Yeah not only salads but also like potatoes.
Sachiko: Potato chips, fried chicken sometimes.
Natsuko: Oh wow!
Sachiko: Yeah. Wide variety of them and they have seasonal differences too.
Natsuko: Wow!
Sachiko: When it comes to Cherry blossom season, they turn everything into Sakura, Sakura menu.
Natsuko: Wow!
Sachiko: They have strawberries on everything.
Natsuko: Wow! It sounds fancy.
Sachiko: Yeah if you ever come to Japan long term, I would highly recommend ordering pizza at every season. You will be surprised at the variety you get.
Natsuko: Seasonal variety.
Sachiko: Yeah okay and as for drinks, what kind of drinks can you get at pizza drinks?
Natsuko: Do they deliver alcohol?
Sachiko: I don’t know, I have never tried.
Natsuko: We have to find out.
Sachiko: Yes because Natsuko, your favorite food is alcohol, isn’t it?
Natsuko: I am very concerned about this topic. I have to check it and find out.
Sachiko: Okay you are the alcohol pro. So that’s your homework for next week.
Natsuko: Okay oh I have to deliver my pizza.
Sachiko: Now just to give our listeners an idea of how small the sizes are, Natsuko san, when you order a pizza for two people including ourselves, what would be enough for you?
Natsuko: Oh it depends on who…
Sachiko: You are right.
Natsuko: Who is eating it?
Sachiko: That’s true. That is so true.
Natsuko: Well I think in general, you know size M would be for two or maybe three.
Sachiko: Oh okay.
Natsuko: In Japan.
Sachiko: Okay and…
Natsuko: So two to three adults. Yeah.
Sachiko: In my case, I could finish up a medium all on myself.
Natsuko: This store person said that size M is 25 centimeters in diameter.
Sachiko: That’s not very large.
Natsuko: Is it a little smaller than a foot?
Sachiko: Yeah my feet are 24 centimeters long.
Natsuko: Oh.
Sachiko: So it’s a little bit bigger than that. Not a very sanitary example. Sorry but I think you can get the idea.
Natsuko: Yeah.
Sachiko: So beware, if you are a big pizza lover, you should probably go for the L size.
Natsuko: Also many pizza delivery stores are very punctual about the time right?
Sachiko: They are – they are very punctual.
Natsuko: And this store says, if it takes more than 45 minutes, the price will be half.
Sachiko: Yeah. 半額にサービス What does that mean like サービス is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word service but here I think it has a different meaning.
Natsuko: Yes. When you use the word サービス, it can mean free or on the house.
Sachiko: Yes.
Natsuko: Yeah I noticed that. I went to a restaurant with a bunch of friends the other day and they brought out a birthday cake for me which is really, really cute.
Sachiko: Wow!
Natsuko: And they said, ah ケーキはサービスさせて頂きます。
Sachiko: Wow! How generous.
Natsuko: It was really sweeter – it was a humongous cake.
Sachiko: It means that the cake is for free right?
Natsuko: Right. Soサービスさせて頂きます allow us to include that in our service.
Sachiko: Yes. So it means free. Remember that.
Natsuko: Yes. So you don’t end up paying for it.
