INTRODUCTION
Sachiko: A.P.B. on Kinoshita.
Natsuko:
Natsuko: Exact
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
木下さん on the run, where is he? Ah…
Natsuko:
DIALOGUE
SUBORDINATE 1: Boss, about the aforementioned work, next month's submission date is rapidly approaching, so we should really get started on the measures pretty soon.
BOSS: Hmmm...what should we do?
SUBORDINATE 1: This is an important customer, so let's ask Kinoshita.
BOSS: Hmmm...Kinoshita? Okay! Call Kinoshita.
SUBORDINATE 2: Kinoshita won't be in until next month. It seems as if he's succumbed to maternity neurosis. I made him go to China, but he's missing now.
BOSS: What! China! What the heck is he doing at such a busy time! Get me Mr. Lee at the branch office in Shanghai. Start looking for Kinoshita.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Natsuko:
Natsuko:
Natsuko: So someone especially in this busy Tokyo, someone’s too busy. So they want to disappear.
Sachiko: Disappear.
Natsuko: And I totally relate to that sometimes unfortunately. Maybe all the staff at JPod.
Sachiko: Yeah you will have to send out an APB on Sachiko because she is missing.
Natsuko: Oh oh that will be a big trouble. Don’t worry I won’t go all the way to China. I will be somewhere in Tokyo.
VOCAB LIST
Natsuko: はい。提出日
Sachiko: Reporting date, submission date.
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Coming on, nearing.
Sachiko:
Something is coming near to you.
Sachiko: It’s nearing and it’s coming. So it’s really a bit scary. It has a little bit of nuance of something negative or something you don’t want to come.
Natsuko: Yes exactly.
Sachiko: Yeah.
Natsuko: It’s kind of a pressing word.
Sachiko: Yeah.
Sachiko: Right. We use it most often for dates like a test date is coming up or the due date for a big report is on its way. It can also be used for a person or an animal but you know a lot of times you use it for dates.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Yeah.
Sachiko: A really important test is coming up this week.
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Completely
Sachiko: The house was completely destroyed in the earthquake.
I am especially worried about the big earthquake in 能登、石川。
Sachiko: Right, right. There have been so many major scales.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: Large scale earthquakes lately.
Natsuko: Yes. I am very worried.
Sachiko: Childcare.
Natsuko:
Japanese population is aging with less children.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So we have two things going on. We have a society that is aging and the birth rate is declining as well.
Natsuko: Yes.
Sachiko: So it’s got two whammies coming at the same time. So childcare is becoming a big issue.
Natsuko: Political issue.
Sachiko: For working mothers definitely.
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Take a maternity leave or a paternity leave.
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Not that I know of. So you know, I guess in English, we just say maternity leave if you are a mother, paternity leave if you are a father and there is no distinction between whether you are taking time off to care for a child or give birth but the Japanese word 育児休暇 is specifically for childcare.
Natsuko: Yes
Sachiko: So 育児休暇 is the time you take off to take care of your child.
Natsuko: Yes
Sachiko: Untraceable, long lost. One’s whereabouts being unknown.
Sachiko:
Natsuko: 漢字でみると消える Disappear and 息 is for breath.
Sachiko: Right.
Sachiko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko: 行方不明 is missing.
Sachiko: So both words include the nuance of whether the person is living or not.
Natsuko: Right so in both situations, you don’t know if the person is alive or not.
Sachiko: Yes.
Natsuko: It’s hard to tell.
Sachiko: Branch office.
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko: So branch office
So it maybe radio company or a newspaper company but it’s hard to tell just from this conversation.
Sachiko: Yes.
Natsuko: It’s just a style of the company.
Sachiko: I will get in touch with the Osaka branch office.
Sachiko: I will get in touch with the Osaka branch office.
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Put it through to
Sachiko: To connect
Sachiko: はい。
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Please put it through to Kobayashi-san.
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Study how to cope with the situation.
It can mean anything from measure to policy or just kind of any kind of resolution.
Natsuko: Yes for a problem.
Sachiko: Resolution or a reaction.
Sachiko:
Sachiko: So when there is a murder investigation, the police often set up a 対策本部 the Headquarters for the team of people studying how to solve this murder.
Devising a solution or a plan or a measure.
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Sachiko: Sounds very intricate and complicated and requiring a lot of work.
Natsuko: Yes so it’s a work that needs effort.
Sachiko: Right.
Sachiko:

Lesson focus

Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko: It can be roughly translated as because maybe
AなのでB
Natsuko: というと
Sachiko: We have to do B because of A.
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Cause, reason
Natsuko:
Sachiko: result
Natsuko:
Sachiko: The action you are going to take in order to resolve this problem.
Sachiko: Let’s devise a plan because the due date is coming up next month.
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Due date is coming up next month.
Sachiko: We are going to devise a plan
Natsuko: result
Sachiko:
Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
To cause someone or make someone do something.
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Let’s get Kinoshita our ace to take care of this.
Sachiko: So Kinoshita san didn’t volunteer to do this. Somebody else is forcing him or making him do it.
Natsuko:
Sachiko: Poor Kinoshita san
Natsuko:
Natsuko: このやらせる Causative of やる to do something なんですね。
Sachiko: So this is a bit complicated. So make sure you go to japanesepod101.com and pick up the PDFs.

Outro

Sachiko:
Natsuko:
Sachiko:
